Phillips CD-i Zelda's Adventure | NOW ON GAME BOY?
Ойындар
Zelda's Adventure was the third Legend of Zelda title for the ill-fated Phillips CD-i home console/media device. The often lambasted title has been ported/de-made on Game Boy! Is it better? Is it playable?

I love demakes, especially when they're better than the originals lol

This is actually worse than the original. There's literally no way to actually save your progress. At least in the original, you could actually be able to continue where you last saved at all as long as your save is there. This demake doesn't even have that at all! There's an option to save, but it's useless because every time you click to continue you get an error message. Also, the colorless GB graphics and pathetic wand thrusting makes feel like just making my own remake using BS Zelda graphics with the swinging and everything. Though, I would need player sprites from Zelda though. And I would need to make the sword look more like a thin wand blade thing. Yes, it's actually a sword-like wand, not the type of regular sized wand we see in Harry Potter or rod like the magic rod in Zelda 1 and Gameboy games. A detail that the demake got wrong. Yes, there is a sword spell later on in the game. But you can tell by the design in the original that the wand is clearly intended to be more a thin bladed mystical magic sword that functions more like a wand than just any ordinary sword. The original Zelda's Adventure was made purely with the original Zelda on NES in mind as it was clearly trying to replicate what that game did. I mean you literally shoot a sword at enemies in Zelda's Adventure, where as in Zelda 1, your sword beams only look like you're shooting a sword at enemies, many other iterations of sword beams confirm that the sword shaped blasts in were intended to be beams.
I'd say enemy knockback is also a must, if any future updates are to be done on this. That would bring the combat a LOT more in line with the original Zelda, and make a WORLD of difference.

Agreed
This looks like it was built with GB Studio, so it's probably inheriting a lot of the limitations that engine has

That was my thought too. I wonder if it would be possible to do it as a Link's Awakening hack or something?
Despite how rough it looks, I think the CD-i games could use a fine tuning of the GameBoy variety tbh.
What I would love to see is something like a rewrite of the original Zelda's Adventure that removes the loading, improves the UI, balances audio more appropriately, though we're probably still a long way from something like that ever happening. I actually think it would be something like a C-tier cult classic if not for the slowness of the game. I watched a playthrough over a decade ago at this point, and still remember some of the more iconic voice lines from the game. "Look to your heart, look to your dreams, you'll find everything is not as it seems."

The other two games got a remaster that made them almost decent some years ago, hope it happens with this too.
your commitment to all things retro is much appreciated man, all the best to your hard work :)
I've been following you guys since the NBA jam saga and I always love seeing you guys in my feed.
I mean the GB may as well be like the apollo moon computer in comparison to even the CDI
When it comes to the weapons: The wand should be chargeable, much like Link's laser. Wearing an item could change the wand's properties. Subweapons can come with a basic attack for its own button, along with a charged version. This would allow the developer to combine an assortment of items into a smaller but effective selection. Definitely need a text box to describe items in the menu.
I like how Zelda uses a greyscale version of her Oracle games sprite. I’m guessing the modding crew used those as well as Link’s Awakening as a base to build off of?

It's where the art came from, but this definitely isn't built in the Link's Awakening or Oracle engines.
only one thing CDi do right : Title the game as Zelda .. you play as Zelda. Title the game as Link .. you play as Link.
I love what you’ve done so far. I feel like it would be a cool idea to be able to play as other characters like Link after beating the game, makes it more unique than it just being the same game just demaked.
Very intersting approach! :)
4:31 - the good game
Never ceases to amaze me how these games ever got made
Great video... I think someone did a remake of the Zelda gamesfrom CD-i, but not this one. The controls and graphics are better. I just don't know where to find them. Keep up the good work.
these two are the human apex of nerds
Can we really call it "demake"? 😅
I'll wait for a gameboy color version.
Zelda is the only video game series I know that has released two different games simultaneously on two separate occasions. The cdi ones and also oracle games. (Not including games like pokemon that merely release two versions of the same game. The zelda games have very different plots and levels.)
I can't believe they kept the original item menu

Love this showcase! Glad to see someone trying to make these games accessible and playable. Definitely agree with the constructive feedback too, snappier combat would make the game 10x more enjoyable

do this, but with the Link's Awakening Switch graphics, and the other 2 CD-i Zelda games along with it, bundle them in a 3 pack and I'd gladly pay $70 for The Legend of Zelda: The Apocryphal Trilogy
Thanks
Isnt it funny how pixely 8-bit Gameboy graphics that dont take a full minute to load are infinitely visually more appealing than that low res vomit-like texture that tried to be cutting edge and realistic?

Yeah, the CDI game looks so unappealing. Sure from a technical standpoint it impressive, but they could have made a pretty impressive pixel art game with the extra power.
maybe this is one of those times we ask not if we can but if we should
very cool remake, but i agree with their suggestions to improve it
I recognize that gravis gamepad
Personally I think it would had been better if the developer had chosen to base it over the Oracles games instead of the Awaken game.
i did not know the cdi had such bad loading times
Nice so it doesn’t hurt the eyes to look at anymore
Still waiting for the cd-i Nintendo games on the switch eshop.
if i go to playground ill probly get arrested. keep this guy on please, he is great!
Liked for Gerudo valley
The zelda Phillips demake is far better then the original

Man... that Gameboy game must have been a lot of work! It's insane.

It looks made with GB Studio.
@BadDesignBryan

@@TheRealPatete Yep, 100%. It uses the default dialogue box and overhead emotes, and it has the default "Fade to white" screen transitions, as opposed to the smooth scroll of e.g. Link's Awakening. It still take a bit of work to recreate the maps 1:1, and add the enemies and stuff, but that's about it. Most of the game mechanics, from what I can tell from the video, come default in GB Studio.
1:48 because of the overly fancy font, anyone else read that as "Mooing Zelda"? XD
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And love retro games !
Oh nice a Zelda demake video Zelda's and Mario's on GDI makes me sick you rock John and Tony
If it was finished id download but it needs work
I find the CDI version bizarre and jarring art style wise
The real ura zelda 🎉
It looks better and more playable than the original
That haircut..... damn
Philips could have so easily avoided that two-button trap had they any awareness of the outside world of console gaming. 😕The SMS had a similar issue but at least it had a Pause button on the console itself, looking at my CD-i there is room to add one but really three or more buttons should have been their goal in that era of platform release. Even Apple employees fought Steve Jobs late in the game for a mouse with more than one button so it happened in many markets heh. While the CD-i wasn't built with tilemaps in mind(For some dumb reason.) it can actually handle that engine setup with software rendering which The Vision Factory proved with their games. I think with ZA the developer simple couldn't code anything other than the standard CD-i setup of essentially a slideshow interface that a Photo CD would use. Irony of pushing the CD-i to it's limit is to get it to behave like a SNES lol. ZA sure is an ugly mixed-media graphical disaster, something about the 90s made a lot of people think you could layer photos, pixel art, CGI, cartoons, and stop motion puppets into one consistent aesthetic.🤨 I think it's a great idea to remake it in a form more people can actually enjoy. When Capcom did their Zelda titles I was a bit skeptical but those turned out really good in the end.🙂

To be fair, SMS was the western version of a console released in a time 2 buttons were the norm in game. Famicom's select just existed because Nintendo just decided they needed a button to select game options instead of using the d-pad for that and took years until devs started using it for different things ingame.
@loganjorgensen

@@Mari_Izu Yeah there is some hindsight to that. However pause menus and toggles aside was it ever convenient to exclude a Start/Pause button on any home game controller? By the time of the SMS the convention of Fire + Something Else was active. On a technical level Nintendo adopted multiplexing chips inside their controllers early while everybody else dragged their feet for some reason.
gonna pass on this one
well are you talk more for wind waker
Demakes design and sprites are lacking. it could have been really good.

Original > Demake Sorry, but a version with no functional save file feature is actually worse than a version that tends to crash every time you die when playing on emulator. And playing with a keyboard is annoying. I prefer to play games using a controller. Gameplay always feels better when using a controller. Also, why the black/green & a white/yellow GB graphics? Why not GBC or SNES graphics (preferably BS Zelda style)? I feel like this demake was made more to mock how bad the game is then to actually make the game, I don't know, actually playable? Considering how this was clearly made purely just to be a joke, I wouldn't recommend playing this version as a serious alternative, unless you like making your eyes hurt from the colorless graphics and your head hurt from having to play the game from the very beginning again every time you die. The fact that this is even more brutal than Zelda II is is what makes it so obvious that this wasn't meant to be a serious recreation. It's just CDi Zelda haters shitting on games with concepts that truly did have potential but just unfortunately weren't fully realized. Instead of shitting on this game for being the "worst" of the three, people should instead just actually try to make a fully playable recreation that people can actually play without having to worry about having to start all over again when dying. Actually make a version that is actually playable, not less playable on purpose just to mock the game. Zelda's Adventure can be just as good as the other two if someone would actually try their hand at making a version of the game that is actually fun to play. The remake doesn't have to use the same graphics as the original as this recreation does prove, but the replacement graphics should definitely be better than the eyesore GameBoy graphics. At least use GameBoy Color or even NES style for goodness sake. Though, I actually prefer BS Zelda graphics because it best fits the setting of the age of darkness that the game sets in. The tone just has that same sort of difference that MM has compared to OoT. BS Zelda just really sets the tone of that this is a dark toned adventure better than GameBoy Color or 8-Bit (unless it's Zelda II inspired) would. So, for me, Zelda II inspired 8-Bit graphics and BS Zelda graphics work best for a proper demake (visually). As for gameplay, I like said in the video, there's no harm in letting Zelda swing her wand at enemies since that's literally what she does in the original, and Link does that with his sword in every singe Gameboy Zelda release. So, the fact that Zelda thrusts her wand here makes no sense! Also, sometimes, Zelda just sort lets enemies hit her sometimes. I'm sorry, but is this action rpg or a turn based rpg? Also, the game should've allowed for the use of a controller instead of forcing us to use a keyboard. And the game needs a save file feature that actually works. I'd like to actually be able to continue where I left off, not have to do a new game every time I die or take a break. I'd like for the save function to actually be useful for what it's actually there for not useless for just being there just because. Also like said in the video, the game needs not just more music but better music. Using new mixes/covers of whatever themes from the original had wouldn't hurt. And honestly, the cave theme from 2D Zelda games (preferably DS Zelda, maybe with a touch of that classic ALttP aesthetic) would be cool for the Earth Shrine. Which reminds me. Finally, the dungeon design! The dungeon design should at least be as faithful to the original as possible. For example, the Earth Shrine looked like a cave in the original, so it should look that way in the recreation too. By changing the design layout, you may as well have made a sort of fan sequel or even that of a completely different Zelda fan game! This same argument may also apply to the enemies and bosses too. Though, however, their original in-game designs were rather weird sometimes. Although, it wouldn't hurt to at least try to recreate those designs in the style of the recreation, just so that the recreation is more faithful to the original in design. The recreation doesn't have to be 100% perfectly faithful, just faithful enough that it's identity is there, but it's actually fully playable for everyone to enjoy. I want to actually feel like I'm actually playing a fully playable version of Zelda Adventure and not some cheap mock up that's somehow even less playable.
This game is still rough on the edges. Why wasn't this rom hack? At least a rom hack would have a properly made game engine. They should have made a full color version. I was wondering why the load times sucked. The load times are abysmal. At least the Game Boy version fixes that. This Kernel Panic glitch is annoying >_
and it SUCKS. it's empty barren and unfinished. Even though the original was shoddily made, at least it's a finished game
These kind of crapy GB Studio games shouldn't exists... 🤔
Pulling up the menu to retrieve many items. I totally feel that. The two new for the switch. Botw and totk is tooooooo much. Spend most of the time trying to figure what i need when i need it. Not fun at all
