Like many I have a fear of spiders but I can't help but admire their beauty, especially with this amazing footage!

At ~2:03 you can see the large eye to the right (spider's left) change color a bit. It happens elsewhere in this vid. That's the spider looking around...when it's dark the eye is looking at the camera, when it's lighter/body colored, it's generally looking somewhere else. Absolutely gorgeous critter.

Love the fantastic stills, but the video sequence from 1m01s to 1m22s is also quite exceptional, as the spider slowly turns on itself and you get to see all sides without ever losing focus. What a beauty!

That's my favorite scene from the video! Like a model responding to the commands of the photographer, beautiful.

As a photographer who used to mainly capture landscapes and seascapes, it was Thomas Shahan who opened up my fascination for macro photography and helped strengthen my respect for this often misunderstood insects and their value in our ecosystem. Sure my work are not even half as close to his beautiful macro work, but I am thankful as his work made me a better photographer in ways I could not have imagined myself.

I just watched your other Cardinal Jumping spider video. Great images! Very inspiring. I stumbled across what I think is also a Cardinal Jumping spider. However, the one I observed has two short black stripes on his abdomen. I'm trying to figure out what the significance is with the black stripes. Thanks for sharing the video!

Great video clips, Thomas! I'm trying to get better at filming insects at a macro level, but a lot of the discussion about insect photography is focused (heh) on still photos instead. Your video clips are wonderful - very steady and a surprising amount of the shot is in focus despite the narrow DOFs. How do you do it? Do you change your setup or technique at all when filming VS photographing?

I just uploaded a video of one of these that I found crawling on the wall of my barn. They are absolutely gorgeous in person aswell.

Thanks Ian! MLVapp to convert the magic lantern files to batches of DNGs and then editing/processing in DaVinci Resolve!

Thanks! Increasingly more I limit my time/interaction with spiders - don't always go for really high mag stuff if the spider seems intent on getting away. Lost this guy in the grass where I found him and just wished him well.

...and I sometimes just don't feel like swapping lenses for higher mag stuff :/ The 2x of the Laowa 100mm was *just* enough to take a portrait with all his legs in - so I was happy enough with that and just let him go on with his life without any more pestering.

How do you get such still video using the loawa?

Can anyone tell me why phidippus cardinalis? I know phidippus is jumper, but is cardinalis meaning red or direction. Red Jumper or Directional Jumper? Remember, north, easy, south, west are called your cardinal directions.

I really like macro photography and have been using a macro clip on attachment for my phone for quiet a while now which I love. Although it has worked well I'm thinking of switching to a dslr to up my photography game and take even better photos. I have never used a dslr before let alone a digital camera, but I was wondering what camera and lenses you could recommend as I can't afford to spend much money. I want something with very high magnification 2x-5x or more as I really love high magnification macro photos. If possible I would want a lens and camera that would also work well for wildlife photography, like when photographing birds that are all the way at the other end of a pond for example. Like I said I also can't afford to spend much money, do you have any recommendations for me? Thank you.

Maybe look into mft mirrorless cameras? I'm not sure traditional dslrs are the way anymore... too big and prism viewfinders may be on their way out. 2-5x can be tough - look into cheap/lightweight macros and you can always add the raynox dcr-250 to extended kit lenses!

@@terser Okay thanks! I will look into those. Any in particular you would recommend? Are there any cheap macros that you would recommend specifically? Or just any would work? Even though I can't afford to spend much I still want quality, especially high in resolution as I'm an artist and may want to use photos I take as references, at least that is what I'm hoping for. Have you reviewed any cheap macro lenses/the raynox dcr-250 or do you know of anyone who has? Does it produce pictures with high image quality?

Trust me when I say that even 1:1 magnification lenses are a pain to work with, and beyond 1.5, working handheld is borderline impossible for all but the steadiesr hands as even minute shaking is enough to completely shift the entire plane of focus (the closer you are to a subject, the shallower the depth of field is). Look into a view videos on aperture and depth of field before you get into dslrs. If you ever want a sharp affordable macro lens (the lens is more important than the body), look into the tamron 90mm f004 second hand - its a model that got updated a few years ago, but the updated model still has the same optics, just a fancier shell and autofocus and thus the previous model is sold at very low prices, around 250 bucks

I would suggest when you look at cameras to see if you can find on with "In Body Image Stabilization" this was something I was not even aware of at the time when I started looking to purchase a real camera and wish I had known was available, as instead I spent a lot of $$$ on my Canon RP and Canon EF 100mm 2.8 L USM Macro lens which cost almost as much as the camera itself alone ........... That said the canon 100mm 2.8 L macro lens has image stabilization and I love it, it has helped a ton for my good photo rate versus when I was using my Tamron 60mm macro lens that did NOT have image stabilization. Wish I had been able to get a camera with In Body Image stabilization though as if your camera has it then you do not need to spend the extra on lenses with it

I don't understand how that flash works. What are those "tentacles" and that shield in the front?

Flash produces a very brief pop of light - "freezing" any motion in the photographs. White material is a diffuser to soften and spread the light. And the tentacles are locline arms to position the flash heads.
