About 15 minutes of loosely ordered video, photos, and thoughts concerning Phidippus mystaceus - a salticid I've been in love with for a while now! Follow me on twitter (only place I regularly post aside from iNat!): / thomasshahan
Music is me playing some free organ/synth pad VSTs from here: labs.spitfireaudio.com/

There is just so much character and personality in their faces. Some appear curious, some annoyed, others look more melancholy.
Very hyped to see a video from you again Mr. Shahan - your tutorials and images inspired me to get into macro photography 3 years ago and the hobby has not only been a genuine source of joy, but has also given me a deeper appreciation for the small but wonderful creatures we share this planet with.
Wow. You inspire me to go out into my local forest and search for spiders. Love these voiceovers and exceptional visuals. Thank you for your art and spreading spider goodness!
Your photos made me fall in love with jumping spiders many years ago. They are still my favorite. This species, in particular, is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for the awesome vid!
He's back!!!
Such a depth of caring displayed here for these tiny creatures, and nature in general. Very beautiful and good for the heart 😊
I'm always so enamored with your videos. You really put us in their little spidy shoes

Hi, Joey! 🙂 I'm always shocked by the size of the fangs hidden behind the cute and fluffy bits...😲
As a child in San Luis Rio Colorado in the state of Sonora México, I remember some similar sized spiders with fully red bellies. But I never saw them walking, they just jumped about four to six times their body lenght. We used to call them bone spiders because they seemed to be tough little guys. And now I wonder if they're the desert relatives of the phidipus. And yes, it is easy to fall in love with the little criters.

Sounds like the Phidippus cardinalis perhaps! They are hard to miss!
There's nothing quite like a Thomas Shahan video! Excellent work on this and the photography & video footage as well. I like to imagine the little spiders asking the same questions about YOU as you ask about them :)
I found your channel not long ago and I am totally enamored with it!! Your videos are beautiful and educational, for myself, as I don't know tot much about these little guys. They are absolutely cathartic for me, and your channel is why!! Thank You for your amazing videos and photography!!
Thank you very much Thomas for sharing this beauty with us. You inspired me a lot to do macro photografie. Your work is awesome. And the beauty of those spiders is just wonderfull
Spiders in general make my skin crawl but this video makes these particular little guys just majestic.
Just a work of art. Informative and thoughtful. Keep rocking, Thomas.
So looking forward to this, can't wait, great to see another video from the great photographer Thomas Sharon !!!
wonderful video Thomas! thank you for shining such a bright positive light onto the world of spiders!
Fabulous as usual Thomas. These are the best macro/invert videos I have ever seen. Keep up the great work.
Your videos are truly works of art, yet highly informative and relaxing, as well.
Yes this made my day. Good stuff as usual Thomas. Mystical indeed!
Wow. Just wow, this is so amazing and totally fascinating. Observing and documenting these truly uniquely beautiful and mysterious spiders and sharing it with the world is a wonderful thing you're doing Thomas. The editing on the video is fantastic as well, of course. I love the music and sound editing as well. Thank you so much for this. This is like the perfect spider video on KZread. Especially to cure arachnophobes with. :D
What a lovely spider. I'm jealous that you can freely go out and observe spiders in the wild like this.
Welcome back Thomas! Simply the best macro photography videos on KZread; informative, insightful, artistic and relaxing. Better than therapy!
Superb! Great video and stills; all saturated and pin-sharp as usual. Gotta love jumpers: the only spiders with personality...
Your photography is very inspiring for me. I am also proud of owning three of your T-Shirts! Thanks for the video!
Taking care of the "red headed stranger" was so kind. You are teaching us all so much!
Stunning. What a treat! Thank you, Thomas - and friends. 👁️👁️👀👀👁️👁️
11:13 This was so cool and also pretty funny, it kind of looked like the little guy was trying to distract his 'opponent' long enough to be able to escape by swiftly turning and running away, hahah
A wonderful video - thoughtful and with astonishing photography!
Thank you Thomas, for such a beautiful and touching video. A true work of art. I kept pausing the video to stare at those magnificent faces and found myself getting a bit emotional. I so moved by the beauty of those little critters as well as your kindness and concern for them. I wish there more people in the world like you.
Haha I could see you waving in the spiders eyes… amazing photography. Cute little jumping spiders are adorable. =]
Jumping spiders are overwhelmingly cute. Thank you so much for love and care when biking.
This is so fantastic. I own a jumping spider and she’s so adorable. Wonderful creatures. Thank you for this amazing pictures you‘ve shared with us.
Most enjoyable video! Saw and photographed my first Phidippus mystaceus last August - very handsome critter, for sure!! And many thanks for the literature links.
These are the only spider species that I find to be beautiful. I love their cute little faces.
That was one of the best videos I’ve seen on KZread in the last decade. What a wonderful world you’re observing.
Awww they are the cutest of spiders loved the one with the bunny ears pattern on its head it looked like a teeny tiny bunny
I simply adore these little creatures all are so beautiful. One of natures wondrous mysteries . Thank you for sharing 💖🫶💖
Always had a soft spot for these spiders since seeing your videos back in the day, they’re so beautiful and dare I say ‘cute’
ever since a Phidippus audax interacted with me, it significantly lessened my fear of spiders. after that encounter, i found another one lying on the floor with its legs curled up. i gave it some water and a flower to smell. the next day it recovered and was sitting on my window sill. i love these spiders and thanks to them, im not fearful of spiders anymore :)
Thanks again for sharing the sanctity of all life. Beautiful.
I missed your videos very much. So happy you are back, it was again a beautiful work of art, inspiring, touching. Thank you Thomas!
Simply outstanding. Thank you. Your videos should be shown to every young school child on the planet.
So glad to see you’re still at it, old friend! I got a great laugh at the video of the goat on the table. I love that place; it used to be a great place for Collared Lizards until they paved the spillway 😩 Excellent footage. I have the pleasure of running into mystaceus quite often when bowhunting deer these days, spending many hours in oak trees during October and November, and think of you and the other salticid kids each time I see one.
Stunningly beautiful creatures! This is a type we don't have in Colorado so I have never seen one or even heard of them! Your fascination and love for these creatures is inspiring and admirable! Thank you for this presentation!
Very fun video! Always love to see new ones from you Thomas.
They are beautiful. Thank you leaving them where they are happiest, in nature ❤️
Beautiful and intriguing spider, indeed, good pics too! 👍👍👍
I really enjoyed your posting! I love these little creatures!
That is stunning in every respect. I am so impressed; thank you Thomas.
A remarkable presentation. My sons discovered Jumping Spiders when they were quite young. And even though I was very focused on bugs myself as a child, I never noticed them. They are fascinating creatures!
This is some of the most amazing nature video I have ever seen! Just breathtaking!
You back. Congrats and thank you for share.
Great to see you back Thomas
Thank you very much for this video. Can't get enough of jumpers 😄 btw: i love the relaxing touch of your videos and the way you talk
wow I wish everything on the internet started with soothing music and a beautiful picture of mushrooms
Awesome video Thomas, you're a true inspiration. 📷
What a gorgeous critter! Thank you for sharing.
OMG! I thought this channel was dead. Glad to hear from you again! Greetings from KC, MO.
Wow! I have the Phidippus Johnsoni where I'm at near Vancouver B. C. But I lived in Oklahoma for a while and didn't look that closely at the colors on those jumpers! I saw them but they just looked speckled tan since I never took photos. How beautiful they are up close!
Yet to see the video but Great to see you back. Tour videos I enjoy a lot .. great leaning
What a beautiful mind you have, and an eye for your subjects. Thank you. I love spiders. They're so important, and lovely.
I have been waiting for your videos
Thanks. Will be looking for these guys later this year!
Very amazing looking spider. Thoroughly entertained, thank you
Brilliant photos, videos , nice work
So beautiful, absolutely stunning, thank you xx
Incredible video Thomas! I’m primarily a landscape photographer that dabbles in micro occasionally and your photos have given me great inspiration to dig deeper underfoot!
Beautiful relaxing video as always Thomas :) Do you have any general advice on where to look for jumping spiders, regardless of species? Especially on colder days, as we often have here in Sweden, I find it hard to find them.

Just a response from a European angle. In the UK I find it very hard to find jumping spiders in the field, in positions where you can consistently photograph them. I assume this is because they are much easier to find in other biogeographic regions, given how macro photographers from these regions, feature them far more frequently than European macro photographers. The only jumping spiders I have found regularly in the UK are Zebra spiders (Salticus scenicus), which you can typically find on woodwork, stone work, fences etc, in sheltered sun traps. I have also found if you put down a groundsheet or waterproof poncho, in the vegetation, yellow seems attractive, you will get other species of jumping spider to come and bask on them. I have worked with arachnologists doing surveys, vac sampling etc, and have photographed some of the captured spiders in a little mini studio. I use a white plastic water cooler/vending machine cup. Placed some white kitchen paper, with blue patterns in the bottom, tightly packed to stop the spider going to the bottom of the cup. Then top it with a bit of moss, a couple of centimetres, below the lip. It contains the spider and you can use the plastic of the cup to diffuse the flash. You can then photograph the spider in situ, and then just tip it out once you have photographed it. You could use a small pooter to catch them. I know other European macro photographers have either caught them and taken them home to photograph in a mini studio. You can actually buy living jumping spiders and keep them and pets, but I've never done this as I'm only interested in wild spiders.

@@stephenbarlow2493 There's not much to add to your comprehensive reply - thanks. Zebra spiders are quite common in our garden and often venture into the house through an open window, where I occasionally lie in wait with macro and some vegetation at the ready for a staged photo :)

@@stephenbarlow2493 Thanks for a very good answer! I have similar experiences here in Sweden: I almost only find the jumping spiders on warm summer days, and typically on surfaces that have been heated by the sun, such as a wooden wall or stuff made out of plastic. I have encountered maybe 4-5 different species, and the zebra is common here as well. But I only encounter jumping spiders maybe 2-3 times per summer, which is a bummer since they are so beautiful.

@@MicaelWidell - Yes, this is my experience. I get a few quick glimpses, of jumping spiders other than Zebra spiders, and it is rarely an opportunity where you can even try to photograph them.

@@stephenbarlow2493 Yep it's similar here in central/east Europe. It's always a precious opportunity to photograph jumping spiders here. As you said, mostly "zebra spiders" on warm sunny days.. The species are mostly very small too, like barely more than 5mm, so shooting a portrait would require serious magnification (at least 2X even on micro 4/3). Stacking is really tricky as they are pretty active, high mag, low depth of field, close working distance. :D
I adore the little furry jumpers and watch them every chance l get. Thank you
This was an incredible video, sir. I too love everything about spiders and ask the same questions u do. Thank u for these wonderful videos
Spiders deserve so much more love
Blown away, thank you so much
The video is awesome and made more so by your voice. Thank you.
Phenomenal photography and footage, inspiring ambience and mood..these creatures are so amazing and adorable, even if extreme close ups can be startling at points (still working on knee jerk reactions, they just look like they peer into my soul) But honestly insta subbed, I'll come back to this whenever I'm feeling low
Nice work, worth the wait!
Excellent macro photography and video work. I love jumping spiders as well.
Thank you so much for this fascinating and poetic video. I have a deep fear for spiders but you speak so enthusiastically that I have managed somehow to grasp a little bit of the beauty of this species that you are so devoted to. Caring for small creatures of any kind is what humanity should mostly be about. Good job and bright example :)
Fascinating! I think they're one of the coolest looking jumpers.
Beautiful! Great video! 👍👍
10:13 1st spider: "You have far too much red hair, stranger." 2nd spider: "You've obviously never met a high-ranking Phidippus mystaceus before."
Really beautiful! Thank you so much!
I get it, I have Phidippus Audax in my area and I have been fascinated with them for decades.
I'm 70 ,painted alot and encountered many Jumpers , the variety iz amazing, when my kid we small .. one black w/ green fangs lived on ower crownmold & ceilings for anentire winter.
Cool spiders, great camera work. Informative! Thanks!
I fell in love with jumpers as a kid.. cutest critters ever
Wunderschöne Fotos / Videos Danke
Excellent video! We thoroughly enjoyed it. I must say, since we’ve known you, I do pay attention to spiders in a good way!
7:10 I see you waving! Beautiful vid as always!
Simply beautiful.
crying a little [been a long day tbh] but also I just love spiders so much, they're really such beautiful and interesting creatures and jumpers are great spider subjects for studies :] I could watch them for hours
Outstanding footage.
Your camera work is spectacular!
Your work with, and respect for, these species is wonderful and an inspiration, thank you.
Your videos have made me appreciate spiders. And this was was another fresh look. I think I came to see the beauty of their eyes the very first time through your videos. And just wonderful pictures!
Hi Thomas, its Hamza @macromha here, so inspired and delighted to see another documenting video from you which I longed to keep watching for an hour :D So much captivating and teaching, thank you so much for this. Looking forward to next one!
an incredibly precious vid. Ty
An absolute dream species to photograph, amazing how much incredible footage you've gathered. Looks like Oklahoma in October is the place to be! Very glad the males stare down ended well, I witnessed the tail end of a similar confrontation with two gravid Phidippus audax this past summer. Unfortunately one did land a bite and made a meal of the other.
Those spiders have a cute factor that exceeds kittens.
very informative, plus great vibes. it's lovely to have these little peeks into nature when i can't really go out myself lol, so thanks for that. i'm also in awe of the fact that even bugs can get bugs on them. how annoying
Absolutely stunning images!!! Wow!!!! New subscriber right here. 😊
All of those behaviors, from grooming to coordination of walking with eight legs and the processing of sight with eight eyes, is done with about 100,000 neurons. That kind of optimization is incredible.
