_I'm doing a top list of Alliance. Might make a video of this later, but for now I'm just commenting what I think._ 10. Turtle Neck: It's pretty common that your bottom pick is a controversial one - I mean no-one likes being told they are the worst, and when none of the picks are 'bad' it's even more contentious, still I feel this has to be my least favourite. From the get-go Eliminate and PhaseOne don't necessarily seem like 2 producers whose styles would have much synergy to me, but to be fair I didn't think INFEKT and Virtual Riot would work well together either, and the result of that was Das Riddim. I imagine that track is many people's favourite from this album and it's near the top for me too, so I still came into this with an open mind. In the end though, 2 things really drag this down for me: 1 being that many of the sounds here do not give your poor ears a break, and 2 being that I find this track very forgettable - so forgettable in fact that I just listened to this track before I started writing this, and have listened to it quite a few times recently, and I'm still trying really hard to try and remember how any part except the initial drop and bridge go. Let's explain 1 point at a time though. I can understand how some may feel that a sound not being kind on the ears is kind of a moot point when it comes to dubstep, but honestly I really don't believe that's the case. Yes; dubstep often uses screechy basses that scream in your ears, and sometimes those bases are what makes the best tracks out there as beloved as they are, so as a result it may seem to some that the point is essentially to push our ears' tolerance as far as it will go. I would say this is a misguided oversimplification though, because it's rare that a good dubstep track with screamy and screechy sound design isn't either fast paced, or has many intermediary wubs and basses that are still cool, but far more tolerable to listen to; in that way those tracks create a good balance. By having the screechy stuff contrast the rest of the basses you kind of establish in 'the world of your track' that screeching is not the norm, and if it is the norm, then it loses its power and just becomes unpleasant. I would say that's what happened here. The main bass hits hard, and is satisfying, but also constantly hits brief periods of very loud high frequencies that can make this song feel like it's giving you a headache; meanwhile, the other sound that occupies the bulk of the drop is a high pitched and lightly distorted pitch sliding saw, which is already a synth I personally have a bit of a gripe with the use of. I think it's very unoriginal and sometimes lazy, although credit where credit is due, I don't think this particular version of the sound seems lazily made. Still it isn't anything new, and it isn't very pleasant on the ears. Even the weird high pitched filtered supersaw that leads into the second half of the drop, while a cool sound, in this context just adds to the ear bleeding factor of this track. In another track, I probably would have enjoyed it more. Then there's the second half of the drop - and I'm sorry, but I really hate this part with Eliminate's signature squeaky sound. I already feel that his overuse of it can feel really gimmicky, and that his true skills shine through when he makes tracks without resorting to using it (You're Gonna Love me from the Dead Sea EP is probably my favourite Eliminate track, that or maybe Sinkhole), but here it really doesn't work. The original bass from the first half of the drop the squeak is trying to copy is sharp and hard-hitting, and is honestly the only part of this track I enjoy enough to make me still want to listen to it sometimes, but it translates terribly to Eliminate's style. The squeak sound is soft and smooth, and here it's trying to copy a sharp and hard bass, and it doesn't work at all. Meanwhile, the 2nd half of the drop feels so empty due to how weak the squeak is even considering the possible excuse of minimalism. With all that out of the way, I'll finally get back to my 2nd main criticism - the forgettableness of this track. I think this stems from 2 things: 1. The tune of this track in general is very forgettable... In fact I honestly partially forgot it again, so excuse me while I stop writing this to hear it again... Ok, so now having heard it again I can see there are actually 2 reasons for why it is so forgettable. What I initially planned to say is that the rhythm of the main tune is extremely basic, which is true, but I actually don't think that's the main issue after having heard it again - I think the sidechained supersaw may have made me think they were all 1 beat notes when that was just the sidechaining. The bigger issue I would say is that the best indicators of pitch in this track are always in the background, those being the bells and guitar. The supersaw also is pitched more clearly than the other sounds; but still its defining features are its rhythm with the sidechaining, and timbre with the detuned unison, so I personally feel that means it kind of doesn't count. This means that essentially all this track has going for it is timbre and rhythm, and just about every possible rhythm has been done to death in conventional time signatures in Dubstep and Riddim, so that just leaves timbre. Even the timbre I have to criticise though, because it is often unoriginal. Bells and guitars are obviously nothing new, and neither are sidechained supersaws, so that rules out every part of the track that isn't part of the drop out already. It could be argued that detuned supersaws can be a defining feature of a track, because I will admit there are some tracks I find memorable for their supersaws, but I don't think that's the case here - first of all because the fact I can already think of multiple tracks that have it as a defining feature of its buildup shows that even if it can work it's getting overdone at this point, and secondly because usually when tracks manage to feel unique using supersaws the ttracks are really 'built around' the supersaw, and I would say the opposite is true here. The supersaw honestly really contrasts with the rest of this track in that it has asyncopated rhythm at the drop, but the supersaw is just a constant sidechain on every beat. That works well with big smacking snares, but the snares at the buildup are pretty normal. That just leaves the drop. It has some decent growls that fill the brief space inbetween the kicks just before it repeats, but they aren't very prevalent. It also has the main bass for the first half, which is the best part about this track, but also a little too much at times as I mentioned earlier. Besides that every sound is either generic, or a signature 'Eliminate' sound that doesn't feel like it actually belongs in this track. That means that this song doesn't even really offer much new in the timbre department either as well... I wouldn't even really give points for the samples, because they're mixed really badly and I can't hear them at all. I know in a lot of music you can't always tell what's being said but it still sounds good, but here I can hardly even tell when the speech starts, and in the end allI hear is "fuckin' neck" and "ye". I am being very harsh here, but now is probably a good time to clarify that this is not to say that these aren't talented producers, and overall I don't hate this track; I wouldn't go further than underwhelming. This track just weirdly frustrates me with how much it could probably be improved. At the end of the day, I value a track by how much new it brings to the table, and the quality of the execution of that idea. A bad idea can forgiven if executed well, and a good idea can be forgiven for bad execution - but when a track feels both like it's nothing new, and that it doesn't hit any particularly high standards, it feels pretty pointless. Honestly, to summarize from a more personal perspective, that one word is the best one to describe how I feel about this track - pointless. It feels like Riddim for the sake of Riddim without the amount of passion behind that would be needed for that to not bother me. It doesn't have a mood because its tone is inconsistent as hell, it doesn't try anything new (not really anyway), and its use of previously successful ideas feels shoe-horned in and doesn't mix; giving the impression they didn't consider what made the good ideas they were re-using good in the first place, and used them poorly as a result. _Extra bit:_ After seeing the comments section for "Old School" I saw that you guys aren't afraid to criticise a track when you dislike it, so I was honestly expecting to find your guy's comments on this track to be middling or mixed. I was honestly very surprised to see many of you seemed to really like this track, and some even call this their favourite from Alliance. I don't meen this in mean way, I mean this sincerely: Why? I am actually genuinely very curious because my main problem with this track on a personal level isn't even the mistakes it makes, but more that I can't find much good in it to distract me from the bad; but clearly a lot of you guys found something so good in this track that you could see past its issues, so I'd really like to know what that was for you. _If you read this far, then thank you._

Ok, I'm the person who thinks is the best one in the album. We have 3 drops. 1st and 3rd are pretty similar with little differences in pitch. Main inspiration for this was made by PhaseOne, I guess. So, fusion of hard bass and open hats catched me. Eliminate is excellent artist IMO, but his inspiration on Turtle Neck is pretty weak. Second drop is normal. It isn't bad, it isn't sick. It is nothing specious for me. Moreover, I didn't like hats, appearing in 2nd half of 1st & 3rd drop. It is unnecessary. It doesn't match with drop. In my opinion, intro sounds normal. Nothing specious. So, the thing, which I liked at this track at most is PhaseOne drops. But why do I think it is the best? Firstly, my preferences in music are drops. Thats why I can't listen Old School, however it has excellent intro. Secondly, We Don't Play is better for me, but it is not right to compare little collab with megacollab, which contains more opinions and minds on quality and arrangment. So, the tracks I liked also in this album and I will compare are Das Riddim, In Your Skull, Here We Go, Never Know 1) Never Know is nice, but it has more melodic stuff, and doesn't attract me as Turtle Neck (but it is still sick anyway) 2) Here We Go is cool, but it feels less qualitatively than TN. Why? It has excellent arrangment. But the problem is Barely Alive. It is very cool producer, but his tracks sounds little specious. I don't know, how to explain it exactly, but BA drums, especially open hats make track less good in quality in comparison with TN. Anyway, this is still awesome track. 3) In Your Skull has better drops than TN. Why is this worse? It sounds little bit mono. 4) Das Riddim is excellent mastered, has very cool wobs, but (my personally taste) I don't like how it often changes. Every square we have new sound, which is very different. Moreover, some electro wobbles doesn't atract me. Again, it is still sick track with awesome second drop. However, if we compare intros, Das Riddim, In Your Skull and Old School is better that Turtle Neck. But how I said, I prefer drops in music. In conclussion, I prefer Turtle Neck for its PhaseOne drops with heavy bass and drums, felling like metal but it is not metal; for nice quality; for medium stage of repeatability. PhaseOne wins it for me. Anyway, I can understand you opinion.

@@dymcos Thanks. Btw, I never really finished this and by now it feels kinda too late, I only did number 10, 9 ,and 8. So for you and anyone else who might be curious, this is my list. I split it into 5 tiers, and all the tracks in the same tier were really close together and I could easily change my mind on whether one should be above the another one in that tier: - Sick 1. Here we Go 2. Das Riddim 3. Gargoyles - Great 4. In your Skull (At the time of writing this I planned to put it below Never Know, but I changed my mind) - Good 5. Never Know 6. Problem (There was a time I considered putting this at 3rd. 😅 Yeah Chibs' style took a while to click with me, but when it did I was obsessed with it for a week. Now I consider him good, but not *sick* ) - Flawed, but I can still appreciate them 7. Oldschool (I actually kinda liked it...) 8. We don't Play 9. Rubber Band Boi - didn't really like it 10.
