Hi Sarah! So I have at least three questions to ask you. 1) I’m planning on taking the PTCB exam later this summer to become a registered pharmacy technician. Do you remember how many questions there are on the exam for me to study and prepare to obtain my license and certificate, to work at a hospital full-time as a registered pharmacy tech? 2) How did you study and jot down notes throughout your pharmacy school? I’ve been thinking about switching gears from using ordinary notebooks and pencils/pens to using OneNote via iPad. It must be much easier when it comes to studying; I saw so many of my classmates in my chemistry program using their iPads to write notes down. And 3) for pharmacy fraternities, do they offer ToastMasters; like we could discuss any topic that’s pharmacy-related to better our speaking skills?

Hi! 1. I unfortunately took the PTCB exam so long ago I don’t remember the amount of questions and most likely the exam has changed a lot from when I took it :( sorry! 2. That is a great question! I used a combination of my MacBook and iPad when I was in pharmacy school! During live lectures, I would type my notes directly onto the PDF of the slides. I find that this is better for live lectures since some professors can talk very fast! When I was home and needed to review or if the lecture was online (I had the ability to pause) I would use my iPad to annotate onto my notes/slides instead ☺️ but everyone has a different style of studying so do what works best for you! If you are use to using pen/pencil, then the transition to iPad might work well for you.

    3. Sorry I’m not sure what ToastMasters is, but a lot of pharmacy fraternities provide mock interviews to help with internship interviews or residency interviews! I’m general they provide a lot assistance to spearhead your career so that everyone in the fraternity do well when hey graduate

Okay, thank you so much!! 😊 Also ToastMasters is like an upper-level of public speaking. They help you improve your communication skills by going over different current events what’s been happening recently

Hey Sarah, love your new format! I just wanted your advice on something. I am currently a senior getting ready to graduate from undergrad. Pharmacy intrigues me so I have started to volunteer at a local hospital in the outpatient pharmacy. However, I think my interest may lie more in being a hospital pharmacist or working in the industry. So, I am currently trying to apply to a remote internship at a pharmaceutical industry during my gap year. However, I fear I may do a bad job due to my lack of skills, experience, or knowledge. I really want to try it out to see if industry is for me but I am very scared of messing up or not being competent enough. Did you feel like this when your were applying to internships? How did you overcome it? Also do you have any advice on how to get a shadowing opportunity with a hospital pharmacist? I am trying to check out all sectors of pharmacy to confirm if this profession is for me before applying to pharm school?

I love that you are working hard to get as much experience as possible before you commit to this profession! You’re killing it! ☺️Don’t worry about not having enough knowledge as an intern, the whole point of the internship is to help YOU learn from the experience and mentor you. If you already know eveyrhing you need to know, they wouldn’t need you as an intern and you wouldn’t need the internship either. To make sure you do well in your internship or in any experience you do, take VERY detailed and good notes. The goal is to never have your trainer or mentor repeat themselves. Even now as a pharmacist, I work really hard to have detailed notes about all the different shifts so that I am fully prepared to work at any time. I was able to volunteer at a hospital when I was in undergrad through two different programs on campus. I would talk to various healthcare clubs on campus to see if they have any affiliations with hospitals to get experience. If not, I would reach out to hospitals and ask myself. Almost every hospital has some sort of volunteer program for students!

Hey ma'am I am currently in my 6th year of Pharm D program working as an intern in Dr. D. Y. Patil Hospital in Pune, India. I want to move to United States and pursue my pharmacist career. For that first I have to clear FPGEE & NAPLEX. I was thinking to move United States next year and take a course in Public Health and work as part time in pharmacy to know the ground realities of working there, I think this will help me to clear FPGEE & NAPLEX. But still I am confused, will it help me, can you please guide me.

After graduating from high school, I attended a university and majored in biochemistry. You can choose any science major (doesn't need to be biochemistry). I would highly recommend to join some sort of pre-pharmacy society or organization on campus to see if theres any pharmacy volunteering opportunities. During college, I would prioritize getting pharmacy experience such as volunteering at a hospital pharmacy or working part time at a community pharmacy. When you apply for pharmacy school, you will need 3 letters of recommendation and at least one of them must be from a pharmacist.
