Forgot from my previous comment: I’ve been also thinking about obtaining as much scholarships as I can to afford yearly tuition
Hi Sarah!! So my application has finally gotten verified by PharmCAS last Friday for University of Florida 🥳🥳🥳 Anyway, I’ve been thinking about working as a Pharmacy Intern while at the same time studying my PharmD program to avoid forking out loans from the federal student aid to avoid being in debt. That’s for both paying my annual tuition to stay in UF until I graduate, and stay close by from the main campus in Gainesville. Can you give me an advice if my idea on working as a Pharmacy Intern while studying is a good idea or bad idea?
Thank you so much for such a helpful video! I’m currently on my pre-pharmacy journey and can’t wait for what’s ahead!
Awww so excited for you!! Wishing you the best of luck 🥹
Thank you!
Don't go into pharmacy for the money. You will be disappointed. You go into it for the science and the patient care.

Starting pharmacy school this fall cycle! My only question is, in your experience and in your particular area, do retail pharmacist make more than a hospital/clinical pharmacist? I’ve been with CVS for over 3 years now and will be an intern this August, but everyone I ask tells me retail pays the most. Just curious on what do you think
No, salary is affected by many factors! As a clinical hospital pharmacist in California, I get paid significantly more than retail pharmacists who work at CVS or Walgreens. This can vary a lot depending on where you live. In some states, the pay might be the same or less like you heard. Overall high salary really depends on location (state and metropolitan city) and as well as what facility you work for (chain vs. local hospital or pharmacy). I am very fortunate because I work for the VA and they have recently adjusted pharmacists salaries for cost of living. Since I live in a high cost living area, my pay is significantly higher (170k) than the average national pharmacist salary of ~120-130k. I would also be careful with chains like CVS and Walgreens because I hear they tend to lessen your hours over time as you reach higher seniority (because your pay will go up and cost them more). But ask your pharmacists where you intern at if this is true! I know people who had that happen to them, but it is possible that it’s an isolated incident!
@@SarahPharmD thank you for the information 🙏🏻 I was thinking of doing residency as I can’t envision my self working retail. My uncle is the director of pharmacy for Kaiser in California and I was talking to him about the possibility of moving to California in the future and asking him about the potential salary I could make working with him.
@@xpxphidexpxp that’s great that you have a connection to Kaiser! Kaiser and VA both pay very well, especially in California!
Thanks for sharing! I’m a pharmacy student and this was a good review of what we learnt. It was concise and straightforward.
Yay I’m glad it was helpful!
Ooh, very finesse 😍😍😍
Hey Sarah, is counseling patients that have blood clots on DOACs going to be one of my courses I’ll need to learn in my PharmD program?
You will most likely learn in pharmacy school about DOACS in terms of dosing, indication, and dose adjustments in school! That is important too, but in real life practice you will also need to know how to counsel patients about the drug but that is not commonly taught in pharmacy schools so that’s why I decided to make the video ☺️
@@SarahPharmD Okay 👍 Thank you 🙏
Please make a video on prescription audit and medication reconsalation

Hi Sarah!! So two updates I thought I would share with you: 1) I submitted my PharmCAS application yesterday for University of Florida (#GoGators 🐊), and hopefully I get accepted for Fall 2025 🙏. 2) I realized that I’m officially going to start working as a pharmacy technician next month. Because for current pharmacy techs who are planning on starting their pharmacy schools this fall, there will be a lot of “Help Wanted” signs posted in every pharmacy. So I’m hoping that I can finally start working 😁😁😁👨⚕️👨🔬💊💉🧪
Yayay thank you for the update 🥹🥰 exciting next couple months for you!! Wishing you the best of luck on your application hehe
@@SarahPharmD Thank you Sarah!!
Yay, congrats Sarah! Youre my inspiration to become a hospital pharmacist!
Awww thank you so much! 🥹💕
I also was an over achiever in high school graduated with an overall 4.0gpa was in the colorguard and many clubs I only applied at one college which was CSUN I just wanted to stay close to home because I’m an only child and lived with my mom who was a single mom and I didn’t want to leave her because she was sick and older. When I was near the end of my freshman year I found out I was pregnant at 18 years old. So I decided to take a break and not return for my sophomore year and became a pharmacy technician finished the course a week before my baby was born. So then I got some work experience as a pharmacy tech I worked in a long term care pharmacy, I worked retail at a small pharmacy in an office building and then also worked in a hospital. Until I found out I was pregnant with my second baby my husband and I decided to move out of LA to central CA and I’ve been a stay at home mom for the last 12 years. We got married and had 6 kids my youngest will be entering school next year so I’ve been looking into going back to work as a pharmacy tech and going back to school to become a pharmacist. I know it’ll be hard specially with 6 kids but know I can do it there’s no bigger motivation than my kids and being able to show them that it’s never too late. So basically I did everything backwards started my family and raised my babies in my 20s and will be going to school and working in my 30s 😄 I just turned 33 so if all goes well I’ll be a pharmacist in my 40s 😊
That’s amazing!! What an inspiration 🥹 thank you for sharing your story, everyone’s journey is different! I had plenty of pharmacy school classmates who started late in their 30s too and are pharmacists now! Wishing you the best of luck on your journey hehe I’m sure your kids will be proud!
@@SarahPharmD Thank you that makes me feel so much better! When I was 19 and my oldest daughter was a baby I brought her to work one day and a new pharmacist that was in her 40s asked me if I’d go back to school I told her I did want to in the future she said good you should become a pharmacist and I told her maybe it was too late for me now. She inspired me and said she was also a young mother and she went to school while her son was in school and her journey was longer than planned but she did it she was like look at me now I’m finally a pharmacist so if I can so can you. That always stuck with me.
General hospital pharmacist at 170k in Philly my sister makes more than me as a pharmacist
Can you make a video talking about the finances/taking out loans in pharmacy school?
The garlic naan is really good 🫓 I think I used it to make pizza the other time
Thats a great idea! I have to try that hehe
great video Dr. sarah! I’m not a medical professional by any means but I am a graphic designer and just wanted to drop in and say awesome video/graphics/storytelling skills!! where do you find non copywrite music for your videos? if you don’t mind sharing - thanks!
Awww, wow thank you so much!! That means a lot coming from a graphic designer 🥹 When I first started, I honestly just googled or search up copyright free music on youtube & hoped for the best! Now that I am monetized, it is a little easier now since KZread has a Creator Music option for us to select free music or purchase music to use.
I love this video!!!

I can currently do this with my eyes closed. If you are a Pharmacy student, you can become a Pharmacy Technician and get into this position so you can then transition into the Pharmacist position when you are done with school. I prefer hospitals but don’t mind retail as a Technician.
Yes, I agree! This is why I highly recommend pharmacy students to get an internship. Most places like to retain their interns and it’s also good work experience 😊
Congratulations on surpassing 10K subscribers!! Thank you so much for providing us future pharmacists every advice prior to your experience before, during and after your PharmD program. I really appreciate you 🫶

Hey! This was really helpful. I wanted to ask where you live, though, because I’m in Canada and I wanted to make sure i’d have to go through the same process.
hi! I unfortunately live in the US, but hopefully your process isn't too different!
@@SarahPharmD Alright, thank you!
This job is good for introverts. Don't you think?
Yes I agree! I rarely interact with patients and I usually communicate with nursing and providers via teams or on the phone. I mainly work directly with the pharmacy technicians or fellow pharmacists during this shift ☺️
Where do u live sara???
In the US! On the west coast
Love u sarah from India❤❤❤
💕
Hii Sara I m Nandani, will be 1st year college student soon in this pharm d course. My question to u is in India there is 6 year integrated course of pharm d( 5 year of academics +1 year of internship) so how u take 8 years to become pharmacist???
Most people here in the US, we do 4 years of traditional college and 3-4 years of pharmacy school! Most pharmacy schools are 4 years, but more are becoming 3 years. There are a few rare accelerated program like yours that is 6 years total but you would need to be 200% committed and most of us don’t know we are that confident in pursuing the path until after college ☺️
@@SarahPharmD Thank u so much for replying my comment.Loved ur audacity to share your valuable experience And again lots of love to u from India 🫶🏼❤️🫶🏼
Hey Sarah! Now that I’m finally licensed as a registered pharmacy technician, I’m bound to start working at my local hospital very soon. What are your advices on the interview questions the people at the hospital might ask me?
congrats on getting your pharmacy technician license! Hospitals love asking situational questions regarding multiple tasks you need to do (phone call, urgent compound, tasks asked by pharmacist, etc) so make sure you practice explaining how you would prioritize and the thought process behind it. There may not be a correct answer, but they want to hear your thought process and how you communicate it! They also want to make sure you get along with others so try your best to come off as positive as possible (try to not bash on other coworkers or people when you explain stories)
@@SarahPharmD Thank you so much Sarah!!!! 🫶🤗
hello, can i ask what is the 1st step in taking pharmacy after graduation in senior high school? thank you
After graduating from high school, I attended a university and majored in biochemistry. You can choose any science major (doesn't need to be biochemistry). I would highly recommend to join some sort of pre-pharmacy society or organization on campus to see if theres any pharmacy volunteering opportunities. During college, I would prioritize getting pharmacy experience such as volunteering at a hospital pharmacy or working part time at a community pharmacy. When you apply for pharmacy school, you will need 3 letters of recommendation and at least one of them must be from a pharmacist.
That was actually helpful tnx
happy to hear it helped!!
Hey Sarah? Can you send me your video link on the list of interview questions the people at the hospital ask for the pharmacy technician jobs please? 🙏
Thanks for the information. Dr. Sarah!
Nice cup Nice asmr
Hey Sarah, so I’m bound to work at my local hospital as a pharmacy technician. Will I be able to fill out the PSLF form to get through student loan forgiveness I owed from Nova Southeastern University?
You’d have to check to see if they are an eligible employer on the students.gov website!
@@SarahPharmD Okay, thank you!!
what does it take as a pharmacy resident to be successful and stand out?
There could be a lot of answers to this, but I think at the end of the day - how you carry yourself is important! Do you get along with your coresidents and preceptors? Do you take constructive criticism well? Do you take the time to reflect and apply the criticism? Do you have a positive attitude? If yes then you will definitely do well! being book smart is important, but EQ and soft skills can go a long way
Hi Sarah...its Sayra... I am a running pharmacy student in bachelor....if possible please do make a video or shorts about Pharm D degree.....love you in advance ❤
Dr. Sarah, I do have a question for you. So, here shortly, they are trying to have pharmacists be able to proscribe as well, which fun fact over in the UK; they already can after completing their residency and taking their boards (I always found it to be very interesting, seeing as how pharmacist whole degree program is to understand drugs and how they work within the body. they never could prescribe) do you think that would be something that pharmacist should have to power to do? A pharmacy intern and I were talking about that, and we both felt that pharmacists should be able to prescribe, especially those who have gone through a residency and specialize.
Some pharmacists can prescribe here in the US under their scope of practice! For example, a diabetes pharmacist can prescribe and adjust diabetes medications but not other medications that do not fall into their practice. Theres many different types of pharmacists and usually those that are able to prescribe have a collaborative practice agreement with the hospital or clinic that breaks down what types of medications they can prescribe.
@@SarahPharmD I thought if they were like in a clinic setting. Something similar or close to Amcare they could or “technically” outside of that? 🧐
Hi sarah , is PGY1 and PGY2 are equal to Board of pharmacy specialist like BCPS etc.,
No BCPS is separate and requires you to take an exam to become certified! But in order to take the exam, you need to have completed a PGY1 so most people try to become certified after completing their residency ☺️
As a physician myself and one with multiple immediate family members as accomplished pharmacists, it’s a general consensus that it is terribly misleading to label yourself as a Dr.
We have a doctorate degree so I have a Dr title, just like how people with PDH have a Dr title as well. I only use the title for my social media to educate the community, but I don’t tell patients my title because I do agree that it can be confusion. That being said, I worked hard to earn that Dr title so I will continue to use it. Hence why I end my name with PharmD to clarify.
doctor was derived from latin and it meant a teacher and an academic. If we’re trying to credit the term here it should actually go to the academics aka PhDs. Doctors of Pharmacy, Dentistry, etc deserve the title as well as it is also a terminal degree and they earned it. I agree that it can be misleading in a clinical setting since most people know of doctors = physicians but hey, this is KZread and in no way did she give unsolicited medical advice.
The first thing I want to say is congratulations to Dr. Sarah. You got to where you are through your own hard work, dedication, and sacrifices. No matter what people say, you are deserving of the title of Dr. Now to the commenter: the way this comment comes off to me is that you want the title of “Dr.” to be exclusively used for physicians to avoid confusion. To that, I say, this is a very short-sighted view. What about the professors and researchers who help advance medicine? Is it about being in a hospital? Then what about surgeons or other specialists? Can they not use the title of “Dr.” because they’re not physicians? Pharmacists work in hospitals too. This reminds me of the argument that DOs are not real doctors because they’re not MDs, even though they take the same tests. A doctorate indicates that you have enough knowledge and experience to be an expert in your field, that’s it. What irritates me is the arrogance in your comment. I know that most physicians don’t choose to be physicians but are rather forced to become one because they didn’t do well in med school. From your comment, I sense that this is the same case with you. You are just projecting what little power you think you have over people you believe are beneath you. GROW UP.
You have several immediate family members that are accomplished pharmacists yet you are saying it’s misleading to label pharmacists as doctors?? It’s not self labeling when pharmacists actually have a doctoral degree. This was a very ignorant comment. Maybe you should talk with your family members more lol
Hi Sarah, I'm a pharmD student from India seeking my future job in US as a clinical pharmacist. Can you please make a video for international students like me to have to get licensed and also how to apply further for residencu 🙏
Great video! I’m starting pharmacy school this fall and want to learn more about residency
Congrats on getting into pharmacy school!! Excited for you & your journey 🥹
I have a question, i have been accepted into baylor as pre pharm, but then i have to go to a pharmacy school, are all universities like this? Im looking for a university in texas where i dont have to leave the actual university to go to a pharm school
Yes most pharmacy paths are like this in which you complete university and then you have to apply for a separate pharmacy school program! It is rare but there are a few handful of schools that combine college with pharmacy school
Can you go over more on the loan forgiveness program in your next video or explain it here if you can?
Yes I have mentioned it in a couple videos, but it is a program called PSLF. If you work for an eligible public service facility, you can pay the minimum loan payment each month based off an income-repayment plan for 10 years. The remaining balance will be forgiven after the 10 years! You can google PSLF and it will go into much more detail!
I can try to do a video on it in the future!
Sarah pls can I contact you privately, I'm having cold feet about taking out loans for pharm D school, I'm a b pharm graduate from my home country and my parents aren't willing to sponsor me anymore, pls sarah
Sorry I am unable to do private consultations due to my busy schedule. I am also a US citizen so I unfortunately do not know the process for international students to give you advice :( so sorry!!
