Phalaenopsis Orchid RESCUE🪴💪🏼 | Success with Lava Rock? | 12 month UPDATES

#phalaenopsis #lavarock #rescue
I’m excited to share the journey of my Phalaenopsis 'Alexandra,' a no-ID orchid named after her original owner. Join me as I detail the challenges and successes of transitioning Alexandra back to a lava rock setup after she struggled in LECA and self-watering. This video also includes updates on other orchids in my collection, including a keiki and a longtime rescue Doritaenopsis. Let's dive into the details!
Alexandra thrived in a semi-hydroponic setup with lava rock for years. However, a change to LECA led to a decline. In August 2023, I switched her back to lava rock, and today, I’ll show you her progress. Despite no blooms in winter 2023-24, she's starting a new leaf and showing active root growth.
Care Tips and Fertilization
Discover my fertilization strategy using calcium nitrate and CalMag to encourage healthy root growth. I explain why these supplements are crucial, especially in a dry climate with low humidity, and how they help Alexandra recover.
Doritaenopsis 'Aida' and Keiki Updates
I also provide updates on Doritaenopsis 'Aida,' a rescue orchid that struggled with LECA and scale issues. Now in lava rock, she’s showing signs of recovery. Plus, I introduce a keiki of Phalaenopsis pulchra, thriving in a lava rock setup.
Enjoy this comprehensive update on my orchids' journey and learn valuable tips for transitioning and caring for your Phalaenopsis and Doritaenopsis in lava rock setups. So NICE to see that these phals are doing well. They are looking so healthy. Once they are given the appropriate care they thrive! You've met their needs, and they are responding in the best way possible. Congrats to you. I moved several phals which I "inherited" from another grower to shallow pots/dishes and put them in some tree fern fiber. To my surprise they are doing well - pushing new leaves. A couple of others are in large clear plastic water bottles which have been converted to have a 2" water reservoir which holds an organic medium mixed with a few lecca beads and some styrofoam. There are water drainage holes drilled at a 2" height from the bottle's bottom for excess water drainage. (This is from another orchid KZreadr in Asia.) The plants weren't doing well so I decided to try it. And, voila, these 3 plants love it. Right conditions for the right plant. I have recently ordered an Odontonia (Oncidiopsis x Miltonipsis) to try growing here in s.e. Florida. I intend to use the tree fern fiber as a medium for it. From what I've read it should be fine here but might have some adjustments to make by placing it indoors when we have our high temps/humidity in the summer. What do you think? I've read that it likes to stay uniformly moist since it grows near the equator. We'll see. May you have a GREAT afternoon. Enjoy your garden and your pets.

HI Pat 😍💐I am so glad that there is recovery in Alexandra, and well... to have the other 2 come through their first winter in lava rock looking much better than when they went in, it really is a relief 😅 thank you for your kind words of support 🫶🏼 I started quite a few phals in the plastic bottles as pots (back in the 90s) before moving them to clay. At the time I was not prepared to pay for clay pots, seeing as the bottles were 'free' or they would have gone into the recycling bin. Only when the phals grew, did I invest in clay pots. I still use plastic bottles for ICU and have some rescue orchids with a reservoir. 👍🏼 absolutely agree that the cross you are getting should be moved indoors when temps are too high! I hope that the stress of shipping at this time of year with the high temps, will not be too taxing on the plant. If so, you will see leaf tip burn or possibly small black spots appearing on the leaves, which is not a fungus. That would be the sign of cells having been exposed to heat and they collapsed... but beyond that, there should be no issues. Definitely keep it nice and moist all the time. I have a miltonidia, similar care requirements and that thing drinks like a sailor 🫣 😅 while it is outside, the leca keeps the roots cool. In this instance, my leca is working the magic with evaporative cooling to the root system while temperatures are higher. Yin and Yang 😃 the afternoon was uneventful, thank goodness! No orchid suffered any harm 😅 really appreciate your best wishes and wish you exactly the same, have a GREAT afternoon!😃 Pets are about to be fed, well, Xyliano is already having his dinner, the pups will get served shortly. Thank you so much for watching 🫶🏼❤️🌸

😍💐HI Denise!! Thank YOU so much for watching and for your comment and your incredible support here, lovely lady!! I did have a good week... a little confused with all the open end videos I have in folders. I prefer to work on one project at a time, but time permitting I am now working on other videos by just creating the elements that I think would make the viewing experience nicer.... so I am in a bit of a kaffuffle! 🥴 methinks, that I need to get to those videos or else we are going to have a mess on our hands soon...

🦒👋👌💝 Phalaenopsis species that are happy producing keikis like pulchra should be amazing when they all decide to bloom at same time. I dream.of that show. I wish we get to that situation some day, soon 😅. Mine are too small yet but yours are getting huge. So, ladies pulchra, give us some blooms, please and the sooner the better 😅 Can you hear the thunder? I bet you could, they are so loud. I do not dare leaving the orchids in the rain because there could be hail. But it would be nice to give them a good flush without having to work for it. It has been drizzing all morning and now it is pouring. Have I skipped summer and went straight to fall? 😮🤔

FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good evening, meine liebe Freundin! I do not mind all these keikis... at least I am able to grow these keikis on, which has NOT been the case with the majority of the phalaenopsis complex hybrid keikis that I was trying to save (except 2) but... if this is what pulchra wants to do, I am just relieved to see that both of them came through the winter unscathed! I may have lost the chance of blooms with my pulchra mother plant this year, because both of the long spikes were snapped by the birdies thinking they were a great perch. Meh! something is growing at the nodes at the back, but now I have a feeling that would be another keiki 🤣 I had thunder the other day, but no rain on the patio. This morning, I had a few drops, but nothing to write home about. It has just cooled off so much, I feel I need a blanket around my back again! Meh! Crazy weather 🥲 really appreciate you watching este video, amiga mia!! Thank you so much 🫶🏼 I hope you had a beautiful day and wish you a relaxing evening ❤️🌸

Thank you so so much, Nina! I really appreciate this update! For me, I've saved my phal seedling for the 2nd time using lava rock! 😂 1st saving, due to leca causing root rot, leaving rootless phalaenopsis seedling. 2nd time, i transferred it to a bed of sphagnum moss, it grew 2 new fresh roots but then suddenly died and blackened as well. So I transferred it finally and let it sit on a bed small lava rock. and earlier this day, since the root is more than an inch long, I finally staked it up and covered the root with pumice, so fingers crossed that this is gonna be the key! Lava Rock and Pumice is a miracle doer for orchids! 🤧💚 Thank you so so much for this update, Nina! I really appreciate you making a video and taking part of your time for this. I'm glad to see that they're all doing wonderful! 😍🤩💚 Have a wonderful week ahead my great ninja orchid friend! 🎉

😍Hi! 💐 I am glad that you saw this video and did not feel as though your request was forgotten. Thank YOU so much for taking time out of your R&R evening to check it out! Good to hear that your phal is picking up speed. If I could source pumice locally, I would use it in more pots, but I am not going to spend money I need for dog food, on shipping in media that I cannot get here. For that reason, I work with different sizes of lava rock... where I need more water retention, I use smaller lava rock. That is where my layering comes in. Having all these phals in the process of recovering gives me hope. 👍🏼 wishing YOU a wonderful week ahead, as well, amigo! I hope your Monday started of great, setting the pace for the rest of your week 🫶🏼❤️🌸

It's always lovely hearing your enthusiasm for your beautiful orchids. A question though - re the orchid that has repeated keiki growths - couldn't that be a reaction to stress?

  • @NinjaOrchids

    @NinjaOrchids

    Ай бұрын

HI Sylvia 😍💐 thank you so much for your kind feedback on the videos, I truly appreciate it! Yes, a lot of the time, if a phal produces keikis, then it can be considered a sign of stress, however, there are other factors to take into consideration to determine if the keiki growths are in actual fact induced because of stress. Some of those are, the orchid has no roots, or is struggling to hydrate in some way, the leaves look dull and not shiny or feel firm, just to name the main 2 reasons for a phal to focus on keikis, however, with the pulchra, keikis could just be part of her DNA, because I have seen this orchid grown elsewhere and she also produces keikis for those owners. This one may be a difficult one to get to bloom because of the balance of light v burning leaves may be a fine margin, OR there is not enough of the orchid yet, to bloom... unfortunately, the mother plant was growing 2 amazing spikes, which wild birds used as a perch and snapped off 🙄 so, I was hoping to be able to see if the mother plant was big enough now, to bloom. However, if she branches on the nodes lower in the spikes that I have left, I have a feeling that she is also going to grow keikis there because of the disturbance. Meh!! 😆 we shall see what happens. I am comfortable though, with the keiki producing another keiki... my thoughts are, do not disturb a pulchra, or else she will first produce keikis until she trusts the situation. 🤔 hope you are having a great day already, Sylvia! Thank you so much for watching and for your amazing support 🫶🏼 I really appreciate you ❤️🌸

Hi Nina, great info and wisdom. You have a stunner Phal, I need the namd of this one if you don't mind. Outstanding work rescuing these Phals. I gave a beautiful Bellina to the wife of a friend. She did not provide care as she should have. I now have the Bellina and she is in ICU, I'm very confident the orchid will survive. I gave her strong bones before it was gifted. Orchid Master I havd a question for you; how much heat can Mr. Stan Man take without stressing out the orchid. I've been taking him in when temps rise above 85f. Thank You Orchid Master.

🌸🥷🏼Bob San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐good morning, my 🌸🥷🏼Amigo the name of the one that has the purple blooms? That is Doritaenopsis Purple Gem 'Aida'. If you google Phalaenopsis pulchra and check out her blooms, you may like them as well. Mine has not bloomed and well, if the wild birdies did not try to perch on the 2 longer spikes of the mother plant, then it may have been this year that she would be a first time bloomer 🙄 you are right to protect your Stan with the temperature highs you have. You have the option to bring him in, and 85ºF is a good bracket. When your's is bigger, more established, then you can go into the low 90s as long as he stays in the shade. At this time though, baby him for another year. See how much he bulks up in the coming months. They are pretty resilient, but you don't want the leaves to show stress, if you can avoid it. My Stan is showing signs of stress, even while under his blanket until the East side is in the shade.... I keep him well watered at all times to help him out. Thank YOU 🌸🥷🏼 Friend San! As I mentioned before I had only 2 phals bloom for me last year and this year I so far have 8. My phals are growing masses of roots and a couple have up to 10 new roots on them. As we have a couple more months of cooler nights I am hopeful for more spikes. Not sure whether some that are growing so many roots will have the energy to grow flower spikes 😉. Hi Nina. I was just discussing my dozen or so phals that live indoors under grow lights and have been with me for about 2 years with no sign of blooms coming any time soon. As we're in the middle of winter i put them on a table outside to get the cool down they need for 3 weeks. Theyve been back inside for 3 weeks now and so far no spikes making a grand entrance yet. I know I'm impatient and cant wait to see the first sign of a spike but dont know how long it will take. Youll hear me all the way from here to Spain when i see a spike, so its kind of "watch this space". Thanks for an interesting video Nina. Good luck with your rescues.

Aaah, lost my earlier comment. First off great video. Wondering when you decide when a media change is necessary? I have Onc. I’m considering a media change but not sure….. what do you look for?

  • @NinjaOrchids

HI Debbie 😍💐 I feel so bad for viewers that leave comments and YT deletes them without my knowledge. Not everyone comes back to see if their comment is not visible anymore, and may think that I am ignoring them, which is the furthest from the truth 😔 thank you so much for coming back and checking!! Thank you for your feedback 🫶🏼 so, have a look and see if your Twinkle structures are looking shrivelled and the leaves are looking dull, if that is the case, then you may want to have a gentle look see as to what the state of the roots are in the pot. Did your Twinkle get switched to leca without new roots growing? Were new growths starting but new roots were pending? If new growths started at the time, have they at least progressed, even if they have not produced new roots yet? Because of my conditions in the winter, I choose to switch an orchid into different media when I can tell that year in year out, the roots are struggling to establish themselves in leca. The complex hybrid phal in this video has a history in my collection and loved lava rock, and after several years in leca, well.... it was a clear fail, so back into lava rock she went. The others, I chose lava rock straight away, because my Doritaenopsis also hated leca when my heat mats were switched off, and the summer bloomer, well, straight into lava rock, because same story... no evaporative cooling around those roots during the winter, the orchid being a warm to hot grower. So, long story short, what stage was your Twinkle at when you moved her into leca... does she appear to be struggling and if not, then wait until new roots grow to be able to better ascertain if she is just in a stall mode. Also, how long was she in bloom before you moved her into leca? I hope that I am making sense, and if you would like to tell me a little more, then please do so and we can troubleshoot some more 🫶🏼 😃 in the meantime, I hope you are already having a great day, lovely lady! Thank you so much for watching ❤️🌸

@@NinjaOrchids this one was new to me and arrived completely out of the pot, looked like seller had just plunked her into a pot and shipped. (Obviously won’t be getting anything else this seller, also came with bonus mealy bugs). I can’t remember if it had any new roots, since it obviously hadn’t been in its shipping pot for long I went ahead and put her in leca, treated for mealies also. Literally there has been no visible changes, bulbs and leaves look exactly the same, no wrinkles or anything. I kinda want to pull her out of leca to see if anything is going on in the pot, but if it’s just setback and acclimating to my environment, I don’t want to stress it anymore

oh goody!! An orchid with hitchhikers!! Naahhhh, we don't need that in our lives! 😡 what an irresponsible seller! If I may suggest to go with your second thought... 'I don't want to stress it anymore'... you are right with that intuition. The structures are still fine, looking good, that means that something viable is going on in the pot 👍🏼 seems to me as if she is just relieved to be in a place where she is safe, but has some trust issues to deal with based on her passed experience 😉 give her time! Twinkles that are dealing with no roots, no matter the pot, will quickly show that there is a problem. They decline quickly... sounds like your's is just testing her surroundings 🥰

It is not their fault, but I have them, growing, doing their best, but because of my conditions they won't bloom nicely and I am seriously considering getting rid of some just to give me some pots and media back AND giving me more space for the winter months. I mean, I have many that were gifted to me, so I am not going to rehome those just yet, but I am seriously considering some need to go and give some joy to another person who DOES have the right conditions and they WILL be able to enjoy the blooms. Hang in there. And know that, your collection is there to make you happy... if you are over an orchid and want to change or it just doesn't do it for you anymore, rehome it. Work with the ones that move you in a positive way. But, also think... is it a phase you are going through? Will you regret not having them in a couple of months down the line? Just a thought. There is no shame in 'having enough' and moving on from some orchids 🥰 much love and mucho hugs!! Hope I didn't over step 🫶🏼 ❤️🌸
