파리에서 중서부 쪽으로 340km 떨어진 ‘푸와티에’는 ‘누벨 아키텐’(Nouvelle-Aquitaine) 지방의 유서 깊은 도시로 로마네스크 시대의 종교 건축물을 비롯하여 오래된 건물들이 늘어선 골목들이 정겨움을 준다. ‘푸아티에’(Poitiers)는 2016년까지 ‘푸아투-샤랑트’(Poitou-Charentes) 지방의 행정 수도이며 문화, 역사의 중심이던 이곳은 현재 행정제도 개편이후 누벨-아키텐(Nouvelle-Aquitaine) 지방의 역동적인 도시이다.
1431년 대학이 설립된 이래로 « 나는 생각한다, 고로 존재한다 »는 계몽주의 철학자 ‘르네 데카르트’(René Descartes), 16세기 시인 ‘요아킴 뒤 벨레’(Joachim du Bellay) 및 르네상스 인문주의 작가 ‘프랑수아 라블레’(François Rabelais)를 배출한 ‘푸아티에’ 대학으로 우명하며 현재도 30,000명 이상의 학생이 거주하는 젊은이들의 도시이다. 특히, 우리에게도 잘 알려진 감옥제도와 성(性)의 역사에 관한 견해와 연구로 세계적인 프랑스 철학자 미셸 푸코(Michel Foucaul)의 생가가 있다.
현재는 인구 9만여 명의 소도시이지만 중세 ‘아키텐’ 공국의 중심지였으며, 영국왕 ‘헨리 2세’(Henri II)의 왕비이며 사자심왕 ‘리처드 1세’(Richard I)의 어머니 ‘엘레오노르 다키텐’(Aliénor d'Aquitaine )의 출생지이기도 하다.
732년 프랑크 왕국 ‘메로빙거’(Mérovingiens) 왕조의 궁재인 ‘샤를르 마르텔’(Charles Martel 688 -741)이 북상하는 이슬람군을 저지한 곳으로 ‘푸아티에’ 전투 이후로 이슬람 세력이 약화되어 서유럽에서 물러나게 만든 역사적인 도시이다.
또한, 영국과의 ‘백년 전쟁’ 기간이던 1356년 이곳에서 치러진 ‘푸아티에’ 전투에서 프랑스 국왕 ‘장 2세’(Jean II)가 포로로 잡히는 수모를 겪는다. 영국에 억류되었던 ‘장 2세’는 프랑스 전체 1년치 수익의 두배에 해당하는 전쟁배상금을 지불하는 조건으로 풀려나 프랑스로 돌아오지만, 결국 배상금을 준비할 능력이 없다며 1364년에 영국으로 돌아가서 다시 감금된다. 중세 기사도 정신의 표본!
노트르담 라 그랑드 성당 Eglise Notre-Dame-la-Grande
순례지로 각광받은 성당은 12세기 로마네스크 양식으로 단아한 균형미와 풍부한 조각과 내부의 채색된 기둥, 화려한 벽화가 인상적이다.
‘푸아티에’(Poitiers)가 영국군에게 포위당했을 때 ‘푸와티에’ 시장의 서기는 많은 돈을 받는 대가로 도시의 열쇠를 부활절 날에 영국군에게 넘기기로 약속한다. 매수된 서기가 열쇠를 훔치기 위해 시장의 방에 몰래들어가 열쇠를 움켜 잡자 갑자기 열쇠가 사라져 버린다. 깜짝 놀란 서기는 도망치고…
다음날 잠에서 깬 시장 역시 열쇠가 없어진 것을 발견하고, 도시가 넘어가기 전 마지막으로 기도하기 위해 모인 ‘노트르담 라 그랑드’(Notre-Dame-la-Grande) 성당에서 열쇠를 쥐고 있는 성모 마리아 상을 발견하였다. 밤 동안 성벽 아래에서 침공을 준비하던 영국군은 기적 같은 이 이야기를 듣고 도망갔다는 전설이 전해진다.
