Mr. Von Karajan, my favorite conductor. I love the way the make the tempo to slow in every piece he conducts, for me, the best conductor ever.

It's an everlasting masterpiece! I adore this work of Tchaikovsky.

Perfect phrasing here - rock- solid. Knows when to hold back and not to hurry the tempo.

Thank you so much for promoting this brilliance here. Used to have this in vinyl; one of my favorite records. (Think I had the CD, too; can't recall.) Good to be able to hear it again.

To this day I've taken as etalon the Kirov ballet's performance in Tsjaikovski's music, but master Karajan showed to me that the true art lies in his work.

Absolutely amazing rendition of the ballet score in 'highlights' form by Karajan. Always did love his take on it. I own a CD of the 3 part suites - Swan Lake Sleeping Beauty Nutcracker. Great for this time of year!! Merry Christmas.

Absolutely agree John, but we seriously need to educate, otherwise this music will be lost forever. Just as Bach would have been had it not been for Mendelssohn. But where is today's Mendelssohn? Boy, has he got a job on his hands.

This music is of course iconic, and who better than von Karajan to demonstrate it? Half an hour of your life has just been enhanced just by listening to it. So sad that millions of people wouldn't even recognise it! Time to educate surely.

I think the best version of this amazing masterpiece belongs to Charles Dutoit.

Je ne suis pas à l'aise. Je veux dire, tout est techniquement parfait, mais ce sont les choix du chef qui me déroutent. J'aime le rallentando à 0:43, je prends note. Mais vite s'impose une volonté claire de ne pas jouer legato certaines phrases. Ok, c'est un choix. Car le hautbois doit s'en aller pour éviter de se faire écraser par les cors à 0:50, qui piétinent tout comme quatre Panzers, au phrasé digne de Der Freischütz ou Götterdämmerung. Les cordes à 1:25 vont un peu trop vite, mais comme il faut accélérer, vite le tempo de l'oeuvre rattrape les cordes qui tentent de s'échapper en vain comme le peloton dans la Paris-Roubaix. A 2:07 la descente aux enfers des cordes se fait de manière précipitée, sans majestueusité, normal, les cuivres pressent à 2:11 comme des supporteurs sortant d'un stade de foot lorsque leur club a perdu 4-0. Je ne sais pas, ce sont des pros, je m'attendais à autre chose.

Bravo, tout d'accord avec votre exposition. Sour tout les cordes à 01:25, je ne les aime pas, trop vite. Puis, le tempo à 10:00 est un peu trop lent :(

Les choix du chefs, qui était un hédoniste cherchant la beauté plastique, mais pas un sentimental. Je n'aime pas cette valse, sans tendresse, dirigée à la schlag. Rien à voir avec ce qu'en fait Rozhdestvensky par exemple.

I just think Karajan and Tchaikovsky do not go together. Karajan is generally great, especially with Strauss though
