6:03 - you got that backwards - Opera checkmate is called after Opera game, and Opera game is called that because it was played during actual opera in a theater; poor Paul Morphy was seated back to the scene and couldn't even watch the show ;)

I’m afraid it was the other way. Morphy, so the legend goes, was enjoying the opera, so he wasn’t even looking at the board… He was playing blindfolded!

Yeah I’ve seen this before in my other chess creator channel called Agadmator. He posted it and that’s where I saw it first, it’s one game that cannot be forgotten. Can’t wait for the next episode! :)

Cheating against your jailer in order to get free ain't the same.

This series is amazing for kids in case noone has ever mentioned this before. I'm not sure but there isn't great educational chess content on yt for kids specifically, so i bet kids would love to take on an adventure with Peter Patzer.

The Opera Game by Paul Morphy is my favorite game of all time.

The opera game is incredible

when u asked about the game, morphy came to mind immediately. bc when beginning chess i learned of "morphys mate" which is exemplified by this

This series is insanely good!

I remember this game from the 90s when I had a PC Chess game called PowerChess. There were loads of tutorial bots in there that played different styles, the King who would adjust his difficulty based on your winrate against him, and the PowerChess Queen, based on the WChess engine, who gave you post-game analysis on your matches against the King, as well as several sample games with Commentary including the Opera Game and Kasparov vs. Deep Blue, the beginning of the end for humanity.

this was a game. getting rid of everything and still mating. i wonder if at some point he would show insane engine game like alphazero vs stockfish.

I actually had a game relatively similar to this one from the phillidor where I sacked the knight "for free" on d5, as my opponent didn't even play b5. Computer approved of it as it ended with me at minimum winning two pawns and a minor at the end of the line. Second best move was knight sac on b5 and everything else was equal. Still one of my best games, I was *very* happy seeing stockfish approved and I calculated everything correctly.

I’m not good at chess (1100-1200 rated), but i won’t play it because the king would feel very unsafe, and i would not be surprised if there was a forced checkmate possible for white Edit: Mate in 2 for white : Ba6 check, Kc7 forced then Qb7 is checkmate

I really like the pick of the game as I feel the early threat of mates does feel like something a rookie would do so it added to the story and pawn pusher moves did feel a cut below but still highly reasonable. It vibes with the story and bonus points for historical
