Here's maybe a different kind of puzzle (that I don't know the definitive answer for myself): What is the least amount of material White needs to checkmate a lone king in the middle of the board? (Say a king on D4) Following rules apply: 1. Can only add white pieces (pawns included) 2. You can NOT use the white king in any way. 3. You can add however many pieces you want. (For instance, 4 queens.) 4. Your final position doesn't have to be "possible" in a real game. So say a double check by 2 queens is fine. (But you can't like, stack pieces atop eachother...) So this would of course go without black taking turns or something. You would just have to come up with a position where black has a lone king on D4 that is mated with as few points of material possible. I'm quite the amateur in chess so this had me thinking for a bit. And I think I know the answer (without looking it up). Not sure how easy this would be for better players though.

i found one with a knight, a pawn and 2 bishops, 10 points, but i found what i think is the best one, 7 pawns: OOOOO POKPP OOPPO OOPPO O=empty square K=enemy king P = pawn I guess that we dont have a better one than 7 points

I got the final move right, and although I admittedly didn’t see the Bf6+ skewer at first (I evaluated Bxa5+ for Kxc3 and determined that it was stalemating before he even pointed out the Bf6 skewer), even if the king were to step over to c2 instead of b3, I don’t see how the bishop could sac itself for the pawn

8:02 But Black can avoid a stalemate if he underpromotes to a bishop or a knight, which should still be a win for Black.

  • @JimBalter

    You mean 4:02 ... and no, black certainly isn't winning with R+N+N+P v Q+B, he's losing ... material is even pointwise but black's king is exposed and his pieces can't coordinate against white's queen. e.g., a1=R Qd5 Ra3 Bg5 Rh3 Bd2+ Ka4 Bf4 Rc3 Be5 Ra3 Qd4+ Kb3 Qc5 Ra2 Qc3+ Ka4 Qd4+ Ka3 Qd5 Re2 Qxa5+ etc.

  • @JimBalter

Then black wins, of course. The whole point of the puzzle is for white to find a draw against black's material advantage, not to throw pieces away. But after Bf6? black doesn't even bother to take the bishop, he plays Qa4 and soon checkmates white.

Tunnel vision is real though. It looked like a brilliant move if you were hoping to skewer the queen, but skewering the queen wasn't the point of the puzzle.
