Peter Hollens & Tim Foust "Misty Mountains" REACTION & ANALYSIS by Vocal Coach/Opera Singer

So much manly voice - and so many notes hit by just two guys!! But WAIT - it can get better. Add a little Lord of the Rings and some fantastic a cappella writing, and also a surprise connection from the past!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Peter Hollens for the first time as he is joined by Tim Foust, and together they perform "Misty Mountains."

Performed by Peter Hollens & Tim Foust - Arranged by Tom Anderson - Video Footage by Fifgen and Landon Donoho - Mixed by Ed Boyer - Mastered by Bill Hare

If you love low notes, then you MUST experience the work of Clamavi de Profundis, if you haven't already. Far Over the Misty Mountains was from the Hobbit, not the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the song was referring to the lost dwarven kingdom of Erebor, not Dwarrowdelf (Moria). Only part of the poem/song were used in the film, so here is the full work, dramatically performed. It will give you goosebumps as you feel the deep and utter sadness of the loss of their kingdom, and maybe even shed a tear. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gmytz8l_qd3IdNI.html

One thing a lot of people seem to miss/forget was that this song/poem was written by Tolkien himself. It is in The Hobbit in the chapter An Unexpected Party. It seems many people believe this was made for the movie which is incorrect. Tolkien was a mastermind of fantasy, world building, and immersion

Since she mentions the lore of the misty mountains, for those who are interested: The song is about the fall of Erebor, 171 years before the events in the Hobbit (not so anciant after all but in medieval fantasy everything has an ancient vibe) and the desire of Thorin's family to return to their home. Curiously Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, is not part of the Misty Mountains though. Erebor was one of the settlements of Thorin's ancestors. It was discovered more or less 840 years before the events of the Hobbit. It was abandoned 200 years later and repopulated almost 400 more years later. Finally, Smaug arrived from the north and occupied the fortress.

@@henrypaleveda7760 the song itself is to do with the fleeing and going back. wind was moaning and trees were burning as they fled. the long forgotten gold is as they are going back because its been so long. its not uncommon for stories and ideals to be passed down through song, as far as the movie is concerned this would have been written after they fled, to leave something for the younger dwarves to remind them to go back. I say the movie, as that is not the version thats in the book. after reading the original commenters comment though, Im just repeating what they said without a bunch of timeframes thrown in.

Love the gorgeous pairing of Peter and Tim in this deep, mystical song. Put this video on a computer or on a TV and watch Tim's body as he sings that incredible low note at the end. The low note makes his body quiver. If you watch his fur collar on the coat, you can see the hairs quivering. These two gentlemen, their entire production and mixing team did an over the top job with the music, attire and scenery. You feel like you are right in the story of the The Lord of the Rings.

I have been listening to Peter Hollens for quite some time now. He is a talented vocalist and producer, but is also just such A NICE PERSON. Tim Foust is a legend. This version of Misty Mountains is so good that at times you can feel it in your bones. Peter Hollens does collaborations with other vocalists as well and has some really beautiful covers. I Love Avi Kaplan and Peter singing the beautiful song "Black is the color of my True Love's Hair". Nina Simone originally sang it, I believe, but until the Peter and Avi collaboration, The Corr's cover was my favorite. It would be fun to see you discuss all three of those versions of that song. Thank you very much for discussing the Misty Mountains cover today. I always look forward to your videos. - Cymru

Great reaction to a fabulous piece! One of the things you'll notice about Tim is that many of his extreme low notes come at the end of phrases when mere mortals would be reaching for oxygen. In this case I didn't hear a breath before the last depth charge. Other times he'll drop these in the background not to draw attention to himself but because it's called for musically. Both Peter and Tim are impeccable musicians first and foremost. Its the musical result, not the ego, that reigns supreme with both men. And our hearts and ears reap the benefits! Keep the great reactions coming!

If you loved this, you will be happy to know that Peter and Tim have collaborated on several other songs, my favorite being their version of Sound of Silence. Peter also did Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair with Avi Kaplan and it's stunning. Peter and friends did an awesome medley from Hamilton. His collaboration with the Gardiner Sisters on a Pirates of the Caribbean medley is a must-hear. Also his Disney Villains Medley, and his version of Hellfire from Hunchback of Notre Dame. Throw in some Lindsay Sterling on violin and you have a very cool Skyrim cover. I would love to see your take on those. I don't know if you've heard of the Swingle Singers. They did a Hollins collaboration, too. But they do incredible a capella arrangements of everything from folk songs, pop standards, to jazz and classical instrumental pieces. Yes, instrumentals, as in Bach. As a classically-trained singer myself, I get goosebumps whenever I hear a capella done really well. Speaking of Tim, on behalf of us Home Fries, I just wanna throw out there this one by Home Free: Folsom Prison Blues. I know a lot of people will want to hear Mayday (and Tim is amazing as always) but as a Johnny Cash fan, I think the guys just made the best cover of this song I have ever heard.
