Peter Gabriel's Full Moon Club update for August 2023, where he discusses the release of Olive Tree, the eighth track to be taken from the album i/o.

Written and produced by Peter Gabriel, Olive Tree is another song about connection, both how we interact with nature and the other species around us, but also a greater sensitivity to the potential for broadening human experience, ‘in some ways I do think we are part of everything and we probably have means to connect and communicate with everything that we often shut off. We only want to see and listen to the things that seem important and relevant to us and shut out the noise of everything else when, probably, hidden in that noise there are all sorts of things that can help us realise our place in this future world.’
Like the song Road to Joy, released in June, Olive Tree is also part of a separate brain-related project that Peter is currently working on, as well as being partly influenced by his interest in the brain reading research of the likes of Jack Gallant’s Lab at Berkeley and Mary Lou Jepsen’s work at Openwater.cc, ‘it feeds into this idea that we're no longer these islands that have our own private thoughts, that our thoughts are going to get opened up to the outside world. The lubrication that allows society to function is based, in part, on not being able to read what's going on in other people's minds, so unless we get more comfortable with how we really are, we're probably going to prefer to stay partly buried in our private worlds.’
Musically, Olive Tree provides another up-tempo moment for the i/o record, ‘I wanted it to have some speed to it but I also wanted some mystery, too. I think it is a celebration in a way and there's a real sense of being alive.’ The song features a string arrangement from John Metcalfe, with further contributions from Manu Katché on drums, Tony Levin on bass, David Rhodes on guitar, Josh Shpak on trumpet and additional percussion from Ged Lynch. The song was recorded at Real World Studios, Bath, The Beehive and British Grove, London.
This month’s full moon release comes with artwork from the artist Barthélémy Toguo and his work ‘Chroniques avec la Nature’.
‘I was aware of Barthélémy Toguo’s work, which I found very haunting and very strong, but I first met him at WOMAD in 2015, when he came as artist in residence. I wasn't talking about this project at that time, but when I was thinking about re-connecting to nature and his work seemed ideal. I think it's super strong and looks wonderful on stage.
Barthélémy listened to the song and his piece was created as a direct response to the music, which hasn't always been the case with the other artists, but he was determined that he should generte something new and I'm very glad he did, it's wonderful.’
Just like the previous full moon releases, Olive Tree will come with differing mix approaches from Mark ‘Spike’ Stent (Bright-Side Mix), released on 1 August, and also from Tchad Blake (Dark-Side Mix) and Hans-Martin Buff’s Atmos mix (In-Side Mix), released later in the month.

No musician, no artist has had as much of an impact on my life than Peter Gabriel. From seeing him on his first PG tour to having his music played at my wedding and when I lost loved ones to seeing him on each of his tours he has been a constant companion and I am forever grateful. Thank you Peter.

I would agree, from his early Genesis albums to the solo stuff (I went right off Genesis after he left) to 20 years of going to Womad festival and all the fantastic artists that this wonderful event has exposed me to.

This is the same for me, but I go back a bit further to Genesis. My husband and I fell in love because of PG and our love of Genesis. When he left Genesis, we went with him.

I have deliberately avoided listening to past videos of this new project. Want to get the full album and sit back and play in it's entirety. Gabriel has made some of THE best music in my lifetime.
Thanks Peter - You have always been an inspiration to me as I move through different aspects of my life. Some of your music has helped me through very dark periods of losing siblings and parents. I heard you say once that your music is a kind of therapy and I’m happy to say it has helped me enormously. I’ve always felt connected to creatures and plants around me and knew there was more intelligence than mankind was aware of. Now as I near the end of my journey, I’m planning my goodbyes. To include having ‘here comes the flood’ played at the celebration. Thank you for sharing life’s journey with me.
The Olive Branch has always been symbolic of extending our desire for peace to our fellow human beings. Water also a reference to re-birth. And here he discusses how polarized we have become. I think Peter has tried throughout his career to bring each other together through a higher understanding of music capable of overcoming our differences.

The moon was spectacular on 01/08/23 at 23:00 in N. Scotland. It was HUGE 🌕 and very orangey in colour. I love the moon almost as much as I've loved Peter Gabriel since my teenage years in the 70's.
Every song on this album is just incredible, some of his most diverse material to date. Can't get enough of it!!!

@@cakemartyr5794 I get it! I want it all now, but he's doing something that you might not be familiar. Back in the 1960s through the early 2000s, a music group would take a year to create an album. The would release a single song to get the hype up and then go on the road touring to get people interested in the new album. Then, during the tour, they would release the album to skyrocketing sales. It was a good game and if done correctly, they went platinum/double/triple platinum and diamond. That can't be counted these days because of streaming and the amazing amount of free songs we get. We have heard more than half the album. I will see him in October after the full moon, so I'll know the October song. Then two more months and this old lady is getting the double CD (assumed - dark and light). I don't stream. My son has put out two streaming albums and his royalties are for $hi》. So there you go. Bring back CDs and vinyl!

I 🤞🤞 and 🙏that I'm able to attend one of your concerts around the world, as I unfortunately didn't have the funds and possibility to take time off to attend your concert in Bergen, when you visited Norway this summer. Lunatic story: Always considered myself a luna-tic, as the moon in the arctic is a truly magical presence. back in 2013, While attending a Sundance in North Dacota, as a facilitator for the dancers, I attracted an extreme amount of wood and deer tics. I claimed that my Arctic pale white skin and blood, had to be like an exotic dish for them 😜 I called myself a LUNAtic, but was corrected to be a LeNatic... Not the best of Native names to get, but at least I got one...(shrugs)😆😆

Olive Tree was playing as we ran, panting, through the streets of Munich to the Konigsplatz, our flight from Gatwick having been delayed by 4 hours! Nevertheless, it was an unforgettable evening and, thanks to KZread, we were later able to watch almost everything we had missed. What a brilliant ensemble of musicians performing these amazing songs.
It seems as though Peter's last album will be as a trilogy that may be listened to in many directions. ¡|o will be quite a tribute to such a remarkable musician and person. Thank you, Peter! --A Lunatic

I had the good fortune to see Peter perform with Genesis in a wonderful concert at the Theatre Royal in York in September 1972, with I think Capability Brown and Spreadeagle as supporting bands. The majestic sound filled and echoed round that excellent venue, I loved it, and it cost me the princely sum of 50p. I saw them again early in 1973 at York University, a time when their star was rising quickly.
