Peter Frampton a story of giving back. I'm a sound engineer, that worked at a casino in Canada. Peter was playing two nights in the show room. One of the cooks that worked there has a daughter with amazing guitar skills. She asked the house engineer what time sound check on the first day was . That day her daughter waited near the elevators, when Peter got on so did she. She said hi and presented Peter with a recording of her playing. Just before show time, low and behold there she is side of stage. Peters touring engineer set up an, IEM mix for her. She watched the show and got comfortable with the IEM. The next day sound check, there she is with her guitar. That night Peter told the story of her jumping on the elevator and giving him the recording. Commenting that he was doing the same thing, when he was trying to get a foot in the door. She came out and played two songs with Peter and ripped a couple of solos to standing ovations. What a great guy never forgetting where it starts. Thank you Peter, one of the great memories, in my 30 year in the business.

That’s a great story... Peter is a really good guy. A couple years after our first induction concert in 2007.... Uriel Jones... one of the Motown Funk Brothers passed away. He was a really good person... he and I became very good friends in short order. Felt like a life long friendship from the start. I asked Peter if he would like to perform with the Funk Brothers at the induction and he flipped out saying yes!!! I’m a huge fan of their’s from the beginning. He sang Signed, Sealed Delivered and “Shotgun” with them that night... It was great.Funny thing was they had no idea who he was... never heard of him but after that night they recorded with Peter and they too became good friends., When Uriel passed , I flew to Detroit for his funeral. Me and Funk Brother Bob Babbitt were the only two white people there until I turned around and standing next to me was Peter. He flew there by himself.. no body knew...That tells you what kind of a person he really is... Best... Joe

When Frampton Comes Alive! came out in 1976, every band playing high school dances had to learn all of those tunes. I couldn't afford the Heil Sound version of the talk box, so I made my own out of a piece of plastic tubing from the local hardware store, and a 15-watt horn from Radio Shack; the whole outfit probably cost me $20.

Drake wouldn't even sell Frampton one or help him acquire one! Frampton asked him and offered to pay him ("Name your price...") and Drake selfishley said, "No, this is mine, I invented it and it's mot for sale." For years Drake went around telling anyone who would listen that Frampton & Joe Walsh had stolen his idea and threatened to sue them for patent infringement. He also threatened to sue Bob Heil. They all told him, "Bring it on, sue us one and all and we'll see you in court!" He never launched that lawsuit. Why? Becaue he knew he didn't have a leg to stand on, much less a case for any kind of litigation, in civil court or otherwise against any of them.

I’ve been seeing several vids lately of Frampton sitting for interviews.. quite a few different ones actually and most seem like they were filmed during the last 5 or 8 years I think. A man of his talent and success in his field could easily sit back, refuse interviews, and surround himself with only the elite. A really big thumbs up to him for remaining so humble, approachable, and also so supportive of others. I get the sense that he would not have hesitated to give credit had he been given a talk box.

My father knew Bob Heil and we used to go to his music store in Marisa, ILLINOIS. My dad was a Corvette design engineer and Bob wanted to know about fiberglass. Ye Olde Music was the name of the store, seemingly in the middle of nowhere in this small town. Always loved the way Pete Drake’s steel guitar blended with the organ in George’s song Behind That Locked Door (written for Mr Dylan). I met George when I was a kid, he seemed like the ultimate hippie to me.

Yes sir! I remember my dad driving me to Ye Old Music Shoppe in 1973 to get a brand-spankin new Les Paul Standard! This was to replace the Rickenbacker that my deranged neighbor destroyed. Anyway ... great time with dad. The Les Paul was $400 new! Still my #1. I think most of the major touring acts that came through St. Louis would head over to Marissa. I remember walking in the store just awestruck. One of Pete Townsend's smashed guitars was hanging from the ceiling. Speaker cabinets o plenty had just come in off the road from BTOs latest tour. And tons of other memorabilia. Plenty of gear. Time with dad? Priceless.

I met Bob Heil back in the nineties. He was doing Home theaters at the time. We were at Satellite convention and he told me personally that he was the one that built the Heil Talk box for Peter Frampton. He also told me that he went to Peter’s wedding. He told a lot of things about Peter, his wreck and how he almost lost his arm. So Peter’s version is the true one.

Thanks for watching and sharing your comments Jack. I believe you are telling the facts as you were told but as always there are at least two sides to every story. Peter told me there are a lot of things that happened back then that he doesn’t remember. I knew Pete very well and like you believe what Bob said I totally believe Pete. Joe Walsh has a story too which includes Dottie West’s husband involvement with the talk box which I think includes Pete as well. Maybe one day we will figure it out. Thanks again for watching.. Best, Joe

Besides the talk box, I also think there are other under utilized effects and instrument, such as the Eventide Harmonizer (Boston used it magnificently), Jimi's Octavia and a good clean octave divider that tracks well could still be amazing today. The Hohner D5/7 Clavinet barely made it out of the 70's with Stevie Wonder, Billy Preston and Boston. Lots of room for it in today's music IMHO. And lastly... who thought it would be a good idea to lose the Hammond B3 and Leslie? Another instrument we don't hear enough of in most new music. I'm a dreamer, I guess

most of those insrumens have become too unreliable to tour with nowadays , we had a b3 hammond we rented out and we allways needed to work on it just from the shaking around while traveing they have come pretty close to the hammond tonewheel sound in digital form nowadays

@@watahyahknow Cool, but I wasn't actually talking about touring with this stuff. I just thought I'd like to hear them in new music. However, if one did want to tour with with this old gear, I still see reliable samples of the effects around. And the B3 doesn't have to be the 150lb consul version. The new solid state ones work great for touring. The clavinet strings could be a problem obtaining tho. I just bought a brand new Conn Strobotuner ST-11 (NOS) from 1977. It was totally unused. This is to replace the one I've been using professionally (literally daily) since 1977. My original ST-11 finally melted!

I really enjoyed this. Saw Frampton LIVE at Celebrity Theatre about 10-12 years ago. He had such an attentive guitar tech it was a different guitar after nearly every song. He put on an excellent show and is very comfortable with what his older fans want to hear. And GOLLY, just how great was that Pete Drake “Lay Lady Lay” ? Made my day !! Always been curious as to who made the “Golden Throat Mouth Tube” advertised in Rolling Stone magazine in the 70’s.

I've been to see him five times since, including two of his acoustic shows which are an absolute delight. Just finished his memoir. I was in the army in 1976 when Frampton's live album came out, I had just bought my first car and got a cheap 35 dollar 8 track player from sears. I bought the 8 track version of Peters record. It was a double album set and the tape was heavy, My player couldn't pull the weight of the tape and ate it, I returned it to the PX. They didn't want to give the 10 dollars back but had no choice. I then bought the only one remaining. It did the same thing.

“The James Gang used to play in Nashville,” explained Walsh,” and I became good friends with Dottie West, the famous classic country singer. We would go to her house and people would come over, and we would sit around with an acoustic guitar and pass it around. That could be anybody - Chet Atkins, Glen Campbell, Roger Miller -- whoever was in town. Dottie’s husband, Bill West, was a pedal steel player. He actually invented the talk box that was used on Pete Drake’s album. One day, while I was at Dottie’s house, Bill went out to the garage and got it and gave it to me. He said, ‘Here, you plug this end into your mouth. You’ll figure it out.’” Walsh said it took a couple of months for him to become proficient with the device. “After I got the hang of it, I then figured out how it was built. I went to a hardware store and got some parts and made one for myself. ‘Rocky Mountain Way’ was the first time I used it on record. I showed it to a friend of mine named Bob Heil, who has a manufacturing company, and he [started making] them. I still have the original -- the one Bill West gave me -- tucked away in a storage locker.” In fact, the original talk box used on “Rocky Mountain Way” had only enough volume for studio use. Together, Walsh and Heil developed a unit powerful enough for live shows. In a 2010 interview with Musician’s Friend, Heil explained: “Joe had recorded ‘Rocky Mountain Way’ using an 8" speaker and a funnel, a device used in Nashville by the steel guitar players. Well, it wasn't very loud so you couldn't use it live. So here we are, two ham radio operators on a Sunday afternoon out in my plant. We grabbed a 250-watt JBL, built a low-pass filter, got all the plumbing together, and voila -- the talk box. That's how it started. After that tour, everybody's going nuts! ‘What's this thing he's got?’ So I put together a commercial unit called the Heil Talk Box. Then Peter Frampton's girlfriend called me wanting a Christmas present for Peter. So I sent a Talk Box. The rest of the story writes itself from there.”

If you listen to Peter’s early stuff it becomes apparent real quick he is a really driven songwriter, excellent player and singer. The album Frampton has songs that run the gamut from happy, poppy toe-tappers to serious rocking jams. It has a plan and a purpose and to my ear it feels like a very talented person making their best effort. In addition to that, he’s a great guy and I’m happy he was a success in his music career and I had a chance to hear it.
