There's no way I'll do that to my kids. Just monitor their diet and try to shuve in micros like vitamins and probiotics, but not restrict them to such madness. They are active, and there's nothing wrong with allowing them treats like sweets and chocolate.
I used to drink quite a bit of beer until i realised that i did that because whenever i'd have some in the fridge my brain would keep reminding me and enticing me to have some. When i didn't buy it anymore that obviously went away and this was a much easier way then fighting myself to keep self control. To this day i try to do this with junkfood and other crap which works quite well except my wife will buy all this stuff for the kids so i can totally relate on getting frustrated by this and trying to find a compromise.

Struggle to believe he was eating 6k cals and not gaining weight. Average RMR for a male is 1600. Acknowledging the 600 burned from the TEF, he has to burn around 3800 cals from exercise. For perspective, a marathon burns an average of 2600 cals. He’s likely underestimated his intake here imo. Don’t go thinking you can eat 6k cals and burn it off with 6 hours of exercise a day🤣

He talked on a recent podcast about how in college he would regularly cycle for 50 miles at 200 watts and around 21mph which equals roughly 1650 calories. And that it was easy enough for him to casually chat with his fellow cyclists. In a recent short he was doing his Zone 2 cardio (which according to him one should be able to do for hours on end and be able to have a conversation while doing it) at 220 watts which is 750kcal/hour, at around 50 years old. So that diet is believable to me.

Me from 13 or 14 up to my early 20s. My whole life was a workout; pushups, pullups, situps before the early a.m. run, wrestling practice after school followed by weightlifting(wrestled mainly so I could use the weightroom), up to 30min on the heavy bag in the evening, more situps(hundreds) before bed. Then a paratrooper in the Army; PT and run every morning, weights every evening after getting off duty from a very active day. Fast forward 30-35yrs, maintaining that level of activity would be pure fantasy. Much like thruhikers that eat everything they can get their hands on for months at a time, it engendered very poor eating habits that are unfortunately much easier to sustain than the activity level was. I'd probably weigh 600lbs instead of 175 if I let myself...

i'm 184cm, 84kg. Cycled 140km in Z2 today (200W normalized power). Garmin says i burnt 2750 active calories + 450 of resting calories. The basal rate for someone young and very active at this weight is above 2500 calories for sure, maybe 3000? So that's 5750 calories per day for 4h15min of Z2 work.
