    I like the pump addition to the spiral staircase. It sets the legs nicely and helps understand, sort of, where the release point is.

    You really shouldn't put up something that you don't understand. You are doing the downswing wrong and doing a disservice to Pete and to the people watching this drill. You take this down and do it correctly.

    Common mistake Clay but the spiral on the way down you have a little wrong. It’s down until you reach the hip. The effect generated is up and back at the same time, then on the downswing it’s down THEN around. It’s left ankle to right foot. Left knee to right ankle. Left thight to right knee. Left hip to right thigh. THEN left hip to right ab. Left ab to right chest. Left chest to right shoulder and through. It’s the best golf drill for me to feel how the lower and upper seperate, reunite, then seperate again.

    hi you have the downswing chain wrong, it starts from the right shin to the ankle then rt knee to left shin until you get half way then it works up like the back swing

    Speaking of Henrik Stenson, do you think Stenson's unique motion before the backswing (hands forward, body backward) benefit more golfers?

  • @SteadyRolling
    @SteadyRolling2 жыл бұрын

    This seems to be exact opposite of what Ben Hogan argued. In his book, he argues that the hands, arms, and shoulders pull the hips into coil, and that the hips initiate the release of that stored torque. Has Hogan's argument lost out to the technique argued in this video? Ben Hogan did specify that his recommendations were based on what was known at the time, and that he expected developments in the future.

    Cowan's spiral drill as he demonstrates it works downwards at the start of downswing , (eg right shin to left ankle) not upwards ( right shin to left knee) you show here ?

    Hi Steve, I'm not really aware of Cowan's spiral staircase drill. Clay may have put his own spin on it here. The downswing needs to start from the ground up or you'll likely get the club racing out in front of the body so I would agree with the way Clay is demonstrating it. Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard love this. Steve pointed out that you have shown this won't. you then admit you don't actually know what it is that Peter Cowen teaches even though it's easy to find on KZread, and then you go on to say this video is correct. it's no wonder golf instruction is such a mess and people never get any better!!

    Your explanation of the "staircase action" during the downswing differ from Cowen's. The staircase does not work "upward" in the legs during his downswing sequencing . FWIW

    It does, foot-work enables the body to create a full turn into a level left position, at the top of the back-swing; and it enables the left side to clear thru the ball. my only confusion with your teaching, and i may have got it wrong, is that in some videos you talk about lag; but in others you talk about getting the left wrist to bow out on the way down. and of course, to add to everyone's confusion, we see videos of hogan doing both. sometimes he creates lag and keeps the left wrist cupped, and other times we see his left wrist bow out in the start of the down-swing. obviously, the left wrist will bow out if we step on the gas with the left foot in the start of the down-swing instead of waiting until the upper part of the right arm has returned to the right side before we apply full force on the ground with the left foot. so i suppose there is a lot of potential confusion for all of us on this score. i suppose it is about deciding which swing is hogan's best swing; and ultimately what is the best swing for ourselves.

    Hi DASH1ful, you definitely don't want to be cupping the wrist to create lag. This makes it much more difficult to square the face at impact and will usually result in flipping. You want to bow the lead wrist as you start down. You can do it earlier but this is the easiest place since the momentum of the club head will be working in your favor. This will also help shallow the club and give you the appearance of more lag. I hope that helps you understanding. We talk about this on the website quite a bit. Here is one of those videos if you want to check it out: topspeedgolf.com/vault/how-to-get-more-lag-in-golf-2-secret-moves-pros/. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

    hi thanks for your reply. this is one of the reasons why i questioned the use of cowen's swing method. he uses a method that creates lag by actively pulling down which the hands and right elbow. he also says that we should rotate then hinge the wrists, on the way back; which is a superficial way of creating lag. lag, and the release, for me, is created by pressing in with the joint of the left wrist. this activates the hand-action on the way back; and then, when you have swung back as far as you can, the pressure that you apply in the joint of the left wrist will make the left wrist cock downwards. it is a similar idea to the all in one swing that earnest jones advocated, only he said that it was the two forefingers and thumbs which should control the swing. the version of the all in one swing that i use also prevents the down-swing from starting soon. it is impossible to "grab" at the club when pressing in with the joint of the left wrist and the shoulders can't take control. and when the hands move half way down and are to the left side of the shaft, pressure in the joint of the left wrist, which applies force to both sides of the shaft with left hand, releases the club thru. this is my best shot at it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/moKC2Laxfba_ZNo.html
