Pet Hen Hatching Tiny Chicks Day 1: Tiny Broody Serama Hens Steal Each Others Nests!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Our tiny serama hens have gone broody again. These include 2 of the babies from the last egg hatching adventure, who are now 7 months old and have gone broody for the first time. Will they be able to hatch out some chicks of their own?
This video is day 1 of the hatching story as our seramas settle into being broody for the first time. I will continue to upload videos for 3 weeks to see if they manage to hatch out their chicks, so subscribe to follow along on their hatching adventure!
Seramas are the world's smallest chicken breed and they mature faster than other breeds. Sweet Pea and Precious have been laying for a couple of months now, and I thought I would give them the chance to be mums for a very special reason - watch the video to find out why.
Below is a video of Sweet Pea and Precious being brooded and hatched out by their mum Artemis (Day 1 to 22): • Serama Egg Hatching St...

How many days into brooding are yours and how many eggs are they covering? (I am not sure if one of our hens can fully cover 10 eggs so may need to remove a couple.) Good luck for the hatch and I'd love to hear how many chicks you end up with. Serama chicks are so sweet!

@@r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266 they’re on day 14 today! I have got them on six eggs as we have a small flock but they are quite large eggs some serama some silkie three of the eggs weren’t developing so originally it was nine. For the first couple days it was only my orange hen dale who was properly brooding as Lilly the other wasn’t quite sure about it yet. so when Lilly left the nest Dale ended up on all the eggs which was adorable but a little to much as some of the eggs are full size silkie eggs. After that first day they started cuddling over the nest and sharing the eggs back and forth. From my understanding they’ve split them 3 on each hen, but every day the eggs each hen has is different as if they have been trading! It’s super cute and I’m very glad they’ve been getting along well. Fingers crossed the hatch goes well as they are both first time moma hens.

Lol..”Serama Drama”. 😆 My Serama hens go broody so often. I have several nesting boxes but only one is popular, so imagine NINE squishy squeaky puffed-up Serama hens all snuggled up and over each other in one 12 x 12 box!. It’s like a group support thing. Some don’t even have eggs underneath them, but will just sit in there with the rest. They take the job extremely seriously, but they are so darn cute! I’m so very sorry to hear about Artemis. And like a much bigger drama than the one we've got goign on! :-) I remember when our silkies were pullets (yet much bigger than the seramas) and 2 silkies and 3 seramas would sleep all in a pile in one nestbox at night - this was before I taught them to roost - it was absolutely hilarious! Will be interesting to see how many of our batch turn out to be males, and figuring out if they can live peacefully together. Eek! I am not sure what I think about the pointy eggs = roosters thing. Our older serama tend to lay eggs iwth a slightlier pointeier egg, and our new seramas (Precious and Sweet Pea) always lay very rounded eggs. All three of those hatching eggs were rounded too so Mr snuggles came out of a rounded egg. Maybe I should check the shape of my current batch of eggs, and see if this turns out to be true... But with them being outdoos, I may well miss seeing which chick comes out of which egg...

Hello, The broodiness depends on a hormonal change in the body. Seeing a clutch of eggs, having access to plenty of food and a safe nest, and warm weather might help things along, but it would vary depending on the hen and the breed. (Some hens, like silkies, go broody no matter what! Mine went broody inthe middle of winter once.) I don't have pekins, but google says they go broody with 'great regularity, so hopefully you will not have long to wait!

Hi Jay, I plied to your comment on another video. I've pasted it below. Good luck! "wow! 26 is a lot to lay and not go broody. Is she young? Or is she is a breed that doesnt tend to go broody often? Otherwise warm weather and plenty of food helps them to go broody, plus a safe place to sit on the eggs where she is undisturbed. If she has started sitting, maybe it will happen soon. It might be normal that she takes a few days before she fully settles. Good luck!"

Here they can, yes. I think in the USA they have different rules about whether chickens/roosters are allowed in gardens in different states.

You could look online for any breeders local to your area. There are lots of facebook groups about seramas so you could try posting on those.

Thank you, Kristal. You're kind. It was such a shock the day we lost her, but I am glad to have her hatching story video to remember her by. She really was so special. Sadly her last egg turned out to be infertile, which I discovered during the first candling session. However, Lulu and Squeak were her sisters ( I think sisters, all purchased from same breeder), so maybe one day I shall have a little Artemis-a-like from out of their eggs? Fingers crossed! Have a great day.

Hi Mustapha. Fertilised eggs would not survive such a long mail journey, I think. We ordered some from within england and even then, the first 6 eggs did not hatch. The second time, I asked the seller to give them some extra wrapping and we got lucky and 3 hatched. I do not think the delicate internal structures will arrive intact by such a long mail journey. Can you try to find a seller nearer to where you live? Best wishes.

@@mustaphabarhoumi6173 HI Mustapha, your brother can find sellers on ebay like we did. It will be best if he looks for one near where he lives and maybe tries to pick the eggs up in person. If mailing, he could email the seller beforehand via ebay and ask if they would provide extra packaging.) The problem with mailed eggs is that the air cell inside the ggs gets broken or 'saddled' in transit, and then the egg will not develop. (If using an incubator, you could try incubating with the blunt end upwards to see if the air cell reforms/is stabilised, but you would need to turn the eggs a little by hand each day.) I cant recommend a seller because I cant remember who we used. And its best to find one closer to the destination anyway. Also, there are many serama groups on facebook where he could post messages to see if there are any sellers in his area. I hope this helps you.

You have no clue how to take care of chikens. You need to move eggs and chicken to dark spot and They need to be away from other chickens. Put some water and Food next to them and leave them alone for 21 days…..whoever thought it would be good idea for this lady to have chickens….
