Perth Valley - Nolans Hut and Scone Hut

A relaxed long weekend trip to Nolans Hut in the Perth Valley, with a day trip up to Scone Hut and back. ZIP have been working to eliminate possums etc. from the valley and have set up predator proof bridges to continue to keep the valley free of invasive predators. It certainly sounds like the birdlife in the valley is appreciating this, although I didn't catch any on video as the wide angle is no good unless critters come right up to you… It's a great part of the world to visit though with well-maintained tracks making this valley a lot more accessible than you'd expect.

Hi - great memories. In 1974 a group of us (AUTC) did a trip up here, up Scone Creek, over Sealy Pass, down the Godley (amazing day), up over Armadillo Pass, and then down the Murchison and out at Mt Cook. This is rare footage thanks - good to see this valley again. The seemingly endless boulder hopping is a feature alright.

That sounds like an awesome trip… (with the Perth River being the least scenic part of that with the high passes and glaciers?) I'm partial to a bit of decent boulder hopping - if they're not slick with water, ice or slime…

@@flightlesskiwis Well Scone Creek Hut was the very first West Coast NZFS hut I ever encountered - and it's odd how vivid the memory of it still is. That brief shot you have in the video approaching it looked so vividly familiar. It was my first real introduction to the Southern Alps and the West Coast wilderness and it rather intimidated me at the time.

Fair enough - the route looks intimidating on the topo… but also now added to the list of 'maybe one day' trip ideas. Those 6 bunk standard NZFS huts have a certain timeless charm to them…

@@flightlesskiwis From memory the only tricky parts of the route were getting down past the Godley terminal lakes - which have expanded dramatically in 50 years (we went down the true right), and getting down from Armadillo Saddle onto the Murchison. I think I had to do one short rappel down a rock gully and finding it was the hard part. It was downstream of the Saddle somewhat.
