Persuasion vs Manipulation | Conor Neill | Leadership

From this week's livestream • Storytelling and Persu...
What is persuasion and what is manipulation?
"Some of the major drivers of human behavior...
Safety: Does it provide peace of mind or reduce risk?
Sex: Does it help them find love or make love?
Convenience: Does it save time or energy?
Social norms: Does it help them get along with others?
Status: Does it improve their standing or help them gain approval?
...which all fit into the larger category of self-interest: How does it serve the person?"
From James Clear ;-)

This segment really stimulated my thought process on pitching. So people don't reject change, but reject been changed. On the other hand. I also think people have a natural tendency to change/influence others. What this meant, is that we can formulate a way, a phrasing that is to open ourselves up to be changed by our target audience, and the way in which they want us to change should be extremely insightful for us, and also it engages your audience to this dialogue because now they are in the shoes that carries the burden of pursuading something

I'm really wrestling with all kinds of moral dilemmas when thinking about this topic. One could make the argument that so long as I'm making the other person feel good, im justified in doing whatever i want, which is a very broad statement but here's an example to clarify: If I'm trying to sell a product that has absolutely no value other than making a person feel good about themselves after buying it. If the product can only succeed in its purpose to make you feel good about owning it after i sell you a package of ideas that are not true. Am i justified in marketing it falsely? I mean, we all know that placebo is real, but does that justify marketing a normal bracelet as some mystical object that attracts good energy? After all, we all have to tell small lies every now and then to make other people feel good. I dont think society would be better if everyone in it is 100% truthful I feel like persuasion and manipulation overlap in many ways and we are only good at telling them apart when facing the most obvious black and white examples of each. But it seems like a good deal of it all is grey Sooo many questions!

If someone starts working off of your fears and weaknesses and sense of insecurity one has, that is called extreme form of manipulation! It is my opinion, as well as personal experience. Taken granted of holding an opinion in opposition of who you actually are, because they focused on my weaknesses, mistakes or fears that might have shown up in my interaction with them to form such negative opinion of myself. This is called judgement in extreme, but then taking it to the next level by not allowing for any communication, but to start taking extreme actions out of the extreme judgements already made by an event or personality reading or vauge perception due to some biases or past experiences. Same goes for the other side, I agree! But, the receiver of the manipulator in extreme is the hardest thing to endure.

According to your definition of persuasion, aren't manipulative advertisments counted as persuasion too?
