Personal Watercraft SMC Hull Repair

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The hulls of most personal watercraft, like this Yamaha WaveRunner, are constructed from SMC, or Sheet Molding Compound. This rigid, glass-reinforced material is tough and strong, but it can break, as in this case when a teenager rammed it into a dock.
Sheet Molding Compound is like a mass-manufactured form of fiberglass. It is a thermoset material made of a heat-setting polyester resin with glass fiber reinforcement. It’s a very rigid material that is smooth on both sides. You can identify it because the substrate is white and has glass fibers in the damaged area. This video will show you the repair process for SMC personal watercraft hulls.

hey guys maybe one can help, I have this same exact ski in the video, on the bottom I have a bunch of gouges from beaching the ski so its all scratched up, I want to use this SMC repair for the bottom but, Is the bottom just paint or gelcoat onto of it?

It should be a gelcoat...which is basically a tinted epoxy paint sprayed into the mold before the glass is applied to the mold.

Can I use this for bottom of the hull too? Is strong enough from the impact of the water

It is epoxy based and will have no problems with adhesion, but for the bottom of the hull I would embed some fiberglass into the repair to make it more impact resistant. Same basic process though.

@@scottb7600 okay, thank for the info. I know it is SMC, the reason I ask is it is fairly thin and flexible in the part that cracked, so I wonder if this material has the flex to not crack again.

@@Matt-nq4du yes, as long as you feather it all in correctly and create a nice gradual transition between the repair and the original material, you should have no worries.

Hi, I have a 2006 seadoo that needs some bottom repair. I thought you couldn't use epoxy over polyester material, gelcoat. Is it possible to use this product and can you spray gelcoat to finish?

  • @scottb7600

Polyester resin and Epoxy don't have any significant bond issues as long as its prepped properly. And yes, you could GelCoat over epoxy, although it would be far more expensive to do that than to use an epoxy paint or other 2k product.

I have a 99 gp1200 and the keel is worn through the top coat from it being beached over 20 years is it just paint on top of epoxy to fix it? Its not gel coat is it?

Its probably gel coat, which typically cures harder than paint and is applied during the manufacturing process of the hull. Its more durable than paint. They make gel coat repair kits for reapplying it to the hull, but it takes a bit of effort to get it to look perfect. I applied it to a sailboat I own and just masked the area and followed the hull contour so when I peeled off the tape, the tape line followed the hull shape. It wasn't as nice as not having the gel coat feathered in, but it sure was a whole lot easier and nobody really notices but me.

@@darinmorgante7200 for the glass repair to get the contour right, that should be fine. Polyvance makes a great epoxy based hardset filler that works great on the gouges. (2020-T) www.polyvance.com/Hardset-Filler-1/2020-T/ I can't remember the brand I used for the gelcoat. I think I bought it from West Marine or other boating supply store. As far as I know, most GelCoat is pretty much the same. Its designed to be sprayed into the mold when making the hull, but can also be applied after, as long as there is a good sanding scratch. You will need to sand and polish the gelcoat after it cures if you want that super high gloss.

If that includes paint, they are not trying to gouge you. It would take several hours for the repair and several more for the paint, plus the cost of materials.

with those big cracks that have gone right through, this is an inadequate repair, and will just crack again. This needs to be cut out with a shallow v, and rebuilt back up with glass matt and epoxy.

If this was a stressed area, you would be correct, but its not. 2020 is surprisingly strong and unless this area is hit again, it should be fine....of course, if its hit again all bets are off anyway.
