I think the biggest reason to use a car as cover is that even if the rounds are going to go through it, the attacker will essentially be shooting blind; you could be laying flat on the ground, or up against the engine block, or behind the boot, or crouching behind the central pillar. The odds of a round penetrating the car might be middling, but they also have to hit the right place and that's far less likely when they can't see you.

Put about 40k miles on it in 2 years between commuting to school and a couple road trips. And that includes my bad luck on needing to put a new clutch, shifter cable, power steering lines, and 2 bearings in it. If I had the tools and space to work on it I coulda done most of that myself with help from my buddy who's a car guy and probably spent like 2.5k including the price of the car.

I did a similar test on my own, using an F-150. The biggest surprises: 230 gr. JHP Winchester Ranger LEO ammo did not penetrate the door when fired from a Detonics Combatmaster with a 3" bbl. In fact, one bullet actually stopped halfway through the outer metal and I was able to pull it out with the pliers on my Leatherman. The other surprise, 90 gr. FMJ out of a Keltec P3AT penetrated through both doors. The .308 FMJ out of an FAL and .223 FMJ from a 16" bbl AR-15 performed as expected, as did 124 gr. .357 Mag out of a 4" GP 100.

If your goal is to not get dead, there's also the "concealment" factor. Unless your assailant knows that you're there (in which case, they could just close on you and then get around the car), your hiding behind the car also prevents you from being either seen at all, or reduces the chance that they're going to be able to aim at you accurately. Could also crouch next to wheels. The steel from the wheels and the brakes and other hardware could help.

I love how you smoothly take out weapons and ammo from your pocket without breaking eye contact and rattling off specs haha if you ever get into a dangerous situation just do that to the attacker and they will submit. Honestly i was surprised by the results though. I thought for sure a car would stop most bullets I either greatly underestimated the power of guns or over estimated the durability of cars. I guess thats conditioning from watching too many movies and games

Several thoughts and ideas submitted for your consideration: (1) Yes, cover beats concealment, but concealment beats being in the open; and (2) If the adversary believes you are behind a car, what part of the car will he / she concentrate their fire on? Some people may hold off on firing, if they don't know where you are. That said, remember feet. If the adversary can look under the car and see your feet, he / she will know exactly where you are. Seems like that's what wheels and tire were made for, to crouch behind and to block the adversary's view of your feet.
