Yes I know this video is over 7 minutes long, but it's a double header and both games would have been pushing the 3 minutes 59 seconds limit for the channel in their own right. My story is this is two vids combined into one, and i'm sticking with it.

It´s ok, at least I understood that part. Love the art of this game, reminds a lot of Anachrony, maybe some geometry forms and colors.

I think the tension is suppose to be more in prioritizing the right dice, not so much in the worker placement spots. This works great in games like Daimyo Rebirth of the Empire, where the dice placement spots are even in your own player area. But I havent actually played Perseverance yet. That said, the bloat is real. No arguing there. And the usual stellar production value.

Such a fantastic breakdown, especially with how heavy this game is! Thanks for another great video J! Loved it-looking forward to trying this one some day! 🦕

7 minutes well spent! Now you have saved me a lot of money. The theme sounds really cool (and my wife is a big fan of dinosaur themes, so bonus points) but the game looks like it could have used a developer that trimmed about a third of the mechanisms and resources off and made the great mechanisms shine... Great overview though :) I can't imagine how hard it was to condense a rules overview into less than 4 mins for each box

But if they had trimmed a third of the mechanisms, then it wouldn't be a Mindclash game!

@@3MBG I haven't played 'Perseverance' yet. I've looked at my copy, but simply am unable to get it to the table at the moment. But based on what I've seen so far, I can see how Anachrony (and even Trickerion) are indeed smoother. This game has a different designer from the Mindclash regulars (though they're involved/credited as well). It seems that as the company's line of games evolve, they feel like that they must step up the experience/challenge. I dunno, but that's my hunch. And to their brilliant minds, stepping up the challenge simply means increasing complexity and number of interlocking actions. I mean, look at what they added to Anchrony for its big box release. With its original modules, that game was already enough. Yet they added MORE! It'll be interesting to see where Voidfall finally ends up on their complexity spectrum. (Which BTW... if...if... if 'Perseverance' is any indication of a trend which Mindclash is pursuing, then I may bail out of Voidfall).

Yeah, trickerion has a lot of moving parts, but its all linked together in a much better way than perseverance.

I've not played Episode 2 yet, but episode 1 is fantastic. It's certainly simpler than Trickerion. Also simpler than some of the Anachrony expansions. Didn't feel bloated at all

So, my comment about the lack of tension in the dice drafting, in episode 1 there are 14 dice for 4 players and 37 action slots, meaning that at the rounds end there are 23 slots free. I don't think i've played a dice drafting or worker placement game where i have felt less tension over getting the thing i want. For me, that alone makes the game a miss.

I would like to write something "in defense of Perseverance" :) But will talko about Episode 1 only, as I have played it so far. Yes it is quite complicated... when you look at the board and rules book for the first time. I myself was thinking "oh my... do I really want to learn all of this?!? it will take ages...". But THEN... I started to read rulebook... and everything was sooo... thematic, sooo... logical... felt almost non-abstract(and every boardgames is abstraction in my opinion). I.e. Your people are out of crashed bout, try to build some settlement to survive. You can go to different districts, but doing so you case commotion. You build something. You collect food. And many others... It's only logical that all those causes interest for dinos that leave on this island. They more you do, the more noise and smell you provide in each district. So the dinos are gathering near all those "movements" and when there is enough of them thet simply attack that district. When people see that dinos are gathering they try to prepare for the attack. Makes traps, try to build walls, and arms themself with whatever they find. So to be ready to fight them when the times comes. Resolution of dino attack is also very, very logical. Traps prepared for specific kind of dino - works way better then trap for other kind. You have officers that have skills and expertise in different filed. You try to talk to them, learn from them and impress them - then they will say good things about you - you will get more votes and followers when the assembly will come. People from the boat will be impressed if you will be good at protecting them from dino attacks . They will be impressed when you are good at building houses for them. Also impressed at your political witts and social skills. And so on. IMHO everything in this game is perfectly logical and thematic. I don't remember games like this in recent times(of course from those I tried). I was really impressed. Also from what I can read on formus on BGG probably it is very well balanced - as every other players claims that "this is the best strategy too win" - when next one claims it is the next one:) So, my recommendation: please just read the rulebook first and check it for yourself if it is indeed too complicated... I presume that episode 2 have similar aspects, but I didn't played it yet.

I agree, there is reasonably good ludonarrative consistency in the game. I certainly dont think its unbalanced, but I definitely did not find the fun in it, and neither did my testers

@@3MBG Ok, agreed. I understand it. No fun for you - thats ok with me:) Thanks for your honest opinion! But there is no sense to talk about that if game is fun for someone. Its of course completely subjective. I just wanted add something from me -> as rules may be complicated, but because of it thematic ties they seem not so complicated and very logical... for me:) From your review I had impression that you are claiming that the rules are overcomplicated. For me every rule makes sense and I really don't know what I could cut off from the episode 1 and still have "complete story" in this game.

@@3MBG I might just get rid of original Nemesis because I feel like lockdown adds so much to the game that actually makes every playthrough feel unique. While I love original nemesis I feel like the more my group played the more samey it felt. Every game started with each group splitting up to either check engines or cockpit. But in nemesis lockdown each time we played started fresh and ended fresh especially with the contingency tokens!
