I listened to this live yesterday, it was very moving. I'm alcoholic, I went thirteen years dry, crashed mentally, am now in another battle to rid myself of this. Anyone who looks down or criticises an addict, just think this, who wakes up one morning and decides 'today I'll be an addict'. No one. Like Perry, I thought I was different to others, I was functioning, meeting other addicts was a leveller, the biggest life lesson I've learnt. There is help, I'm receiving it, sending love xx

It's very courageous for Perry to confront this live on air and Jim as he states is coming up 12 years sober. The big problem I have though is with TALKSPORT being very duplicitous here because the flip side to this is Alan Brazil and several of the morning pundits glorifying going out on daytime drinking sessions after the show. Also it's disingenuous to be concerned about addiction and at the same time pushing gambling ads heavily during the breakfast show and even having a regular odds roundup .

Stopped drinking about 9 years ago, after my second tour of Afg, wasn't anywhere near being an alcoholic, only ever drank on a social occasion, the trigger for me was seeing the effect of not drinking had on other people, and them not being able to walk past a bar/pub when they got home, like making up for lost time, seemed to me like a sign of weakness, so I stopped completely not a big personal sacrifice. What shocked me the most was other people's reactions from close friends to strangers, have a drink!! No thanks,, go on have a drink!! No thanks, I don't drink,,, what?? Why?? Its only one have a drink!!!!! No I am fine thanks,, you boring bstd have a drink!!!! Never ever realised how much drinking means to some people.

Perry thank you so much for being as equally brave as you are vulnerable. Addiction in any form is a monster waiting in the shadows and I have no doubt your testimony will have helped many addicts. I have had both family members and friends struggle with Alcoholism and it’s no laughing matter. Although comparison is the destroyer of joy for me sharing this story beats any achievements you had in football. Tony Adam’s, Paul Merson, Kenny Samson etc…I wonder whether there was a drinking culture in football circa 1980’s/1990’s that either encouraged or facilitated the problem?? Either way you are an inspiration my friend. This subject matter is SERIOUS and it is an ADDICTION. Congratulations on being 7 months sober and long may your abstinence continue. 🙏❤️.x

Perry thank you for being so open and talking about a subject that has so much stigma and misunderstanding. I have a very close person in my life who is struggling with alcoholism and I have seen how destructive it reallly is and how powerless you are over this substance. All I can say from a family member's point of view, your family are so proud of you. But they're not just proud of you for being sober, but for recognising that you are struggling and youve commited to doing something about it. Thank you Simon & Jim for creating an environment for Perry to feel comfortable to share his story and for using your platform to really get this word out there 🤍

Bit of a lightbulb moment for me watching this. Always known I had a drink problem I just thought it was due to other things. They were the problem and I was using alcohol to just put a plaster over it. I'm now hopeful its much easier and these other problems aren't real or at least are much less of a problem. That the real problem is I have an alcohol brain, binge drinking 4 days a week since I was 18 for 30 years. This resulted in me never developing a real personality outside of drink. If I can just stay off it for a as long as possible, forever ideally, I'll find that there is a person inside here who is just waiting to come out. Hopefully that's all it is! Because I just thought I was a freak and a loser, and I was doomed to be like this. If you had said to me it's just the drink Id have wanted to bite your head off, like don't you know my pain?? You want to take the drink off me too, I got nothing else! So now Im still doomed, but I can't get hammered either. NEVER REALIZED!

Addiction is not a disease. Is it easy to kick? Obviously not, but pretending it's a disease is wrong. See someone dying of cancer vs. the person choosing to have a drink and tell me which one has a disease.

Somehow, Perrys voice doesn’t go with how I imagined him to look. Especially as I heard him on the radio yesterday.
