Peroneal Nerve Entrapment - MSR Peroneal Nerve Release

Peroneal Nerve Release - Peroneal Nerve Entrapment is the most common peripheral nerve injury of the lower extremity. Most peroneal nerve injuries occur at the region of the fibular head (common peroneal nerve).
Trauma or compression is a common underlying cause of entrapment of the superficial and deep peroneal nerves. Recurrent ankle sprains or continued kneeling or squatting can increase the incidence of injury. The deep peroneal nerve is most commonly compressed at the ankle under the extensor retinaculum (anterior tarsal tunnel syndrome).

    Long story short, I've been in constant pain for 15 years. I had an injury in school one day standing up while crossed legged and ended up destroying my knee. Well, I'm 31 now, and various circumstances in my life have kept me from being able to receive any medical care, though I have tried. I just discovered this nerve injury while symptom hunting on google for the millionth time... I wish I knew about this so long ago. Thanks for posting this video and giving me the ability to deal with my symptoms instead of searching in the dark perpetually!

    Thank you for watching and sharing your experience, @bartledoo. As I'm sure you understand, it's not possible for me to offer specific advice without a physical examination. I'd recommend finding a medical practitioner in your local area for a professional assessment of your condition. You are welcome to share this video with them, as it is intended as a demonstration for practitioners. Please remember that this technique is not meant to be attempted without professional supervision. I hope you'll soon find the help you need to manage your symptoms more effectively.

    🌺Wow! 👍😊just what I needed 7 mo ago.. but just came accross this video! 8 mo Post meniscus amd ACL surgery with the trapped peroneal nerve no surgeon or physical therapists helped. My surgeon said he has never heard of this. But i did my research and finally after EMG , neuropathy at the bicep’s short head of the nerve at the short-head was confirmed. I was taking Rhodiola Rosea and GABA along with Alpha linoleic acid for 6 months, but as soon as I stop, the pain comes back even on the other side of my body anywhere. I am scheduled for the nerve release surgery in a month, but I am afraid it might not help and will try to do those exercises. Thank you so much!❤🙏💕

    I have pain in exactly those spots (where you first press, but mostly where the fibular head is) - however, it's usually brought on by sitting, ever since I herniated a disc (since healed). It's been really getting me down that I was essentially very lucky healing the big herniation without surgery, but now I have this little thing I can't get rid of.

    Been dealing with this nerve pain on the side of my knee for 2 years now. Went to the DR and he suggested arthroscopic surgery for maybe a torn meniscus. We did the surgery and no tear or anything like that, just a slight plica issue he cleaned up. Was doing physical therapy and still was feeling that same nerve pain. Almost like a jolt/shock/stabbing pain on the side of my knee. So, I decided to just do my own research and came across your nerve videos. Did the workouts and they helped ease that issue up alot. A few days after doing the exercise I came across this video. I performed it basically on myself and instantly that jolt/shock pain was almost gone completely. I'm on day 3 after doing this exercise and no more nerve like pain. I know you can't give me any info regarding my situation without actually doing an examination but, with patients you've treated has anyone ever almost been pain free instantly? Also, if they have is this a issue you think would come back on them or is it something you can fully heal from? THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. Truly changed my life!

    I appreciate your viewership and engagement with our channel. As a practitioner, I must emphasize the importance of personalized medical assessment, and without a physical examination, it would be inappropriate for me to offer specific medical advice. In response to your query, surgical decisions are significant and should be carefully considered. It's crucial to have a thorough discussion with your healthcare provider about all available treatment options, including conservative measures that might be attempted before surgery. Seeking a second opinion is a reasonable course of action if you feel uncertain. A qualified professional can provide a detailed evaluation of your condition and help you understand the potential risks and benefits of any treatment, surgical or otherwise.

    I had FAI surgery due to bone spur and significant to the hip, I believe I have now peroneal nerve injury post surgery. I have tight calf muscles but I specifically have tenderness down the side of my operated leg the worst of the pain is into the ankle. Are you familiar with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia? I suffer from HSP I have extremely unstable tight hips. I've recently started working on the obturator externus and internus muscles to see if that will loosen up my hips and make my leg feel more stable. Also trying trying to release my psoas with a pso-rite on the daily. Tight glutes, feels like sciatica, numbness down my leg. It's all incredibly hard and devastating to endure pain like this every day. Does peroneal nerve and obturator nerve have anything in common?

  • @kinetichealthonline

    @kinetichealthonline

    Thank you for watching the video and reaching out with your question. It's crucial to note that without evaluating an individual in person, it's impossible to provide precise medical advice. Recovery from peroneal nerve issues can vary significantly from one person to another. Typically, treatment involves several sessions over a course of weeks, with progress assessments along the way. This is often supplemented with targeted exercises tailored to the patient's specific condition. It's important to manage expectations as this is usually not a quick fix but part of an ongoing treatment strategy. For concerns about specific symptoms like a bump, it would be best to consult directly with a healthcare professional who can provide a thorough assessment and a personalized treatment plan.

    Can entrapment of this nerve contribute to tension/pain/irritation of insertional achilles/lateral ankle (peroneus longus under retinaculum)/anterior ankle (extensor digitorum and tibialis anterior tendon under retinaculum), as well as venous reflux of great sapheneus vein at the anterior/medial/distal aspect of the tibia accompanied by frequent redness/swelling of foot and exaggerated vasodilation (as compared to other foot) with mild increase of heat/exertion? How about tension in lateral aspect of the knee causing lateral patellar subtflexation/maltracking? I’m sorry for the wall of text. I started barefoot running in March, strained my Achilles, have been having all of these issues since, then injured my knee about a month ago on top of tht. The IT band catches when I bend with weight on the leg. Soreness on the muscle on the front outer thigh, above the knee. Tingling/numbness is present on mostly the outer half of the calf, slightly behind it as well. Foot tingling on top, bottom and slight occasional pain on toes #2 and #3. I have been dealing with this both legs for a year. Ortho had me in knee braces that probably injured them. Threw a clot in left leg peroneal. Blood thinners for three months . Neuropathy followed in both legs. Off blood thinners for three months and threw another in same leg behind knee. On blood thinners again. Working with a good pt. Doctors think neuropathy is due to pre diabetes which has been at 5.8 for years. My diet is very keto and it’s hard to lower it more. I don’t think this is it. Do I need a MRI? Is it safe todo this procedure whilst in blood thinners. Help. Please respond. The neuropathy is no good. In foot ,while ache in peroneals. I desperately want to get to the bottom of this.

    Been suffering with calf fasciculations in the outer calf after a sciatic episode that effected my left leg, particularly outer calf and outside of foot. Left with weak eccentric calf strength in a raise. Have a feeling created a possible nerve compression at the knee from crossing legs compounding my the atrophy that occurred post sciatica in the calf. The fasciculations started only in outer calf..then later pulses/twitches moved to outer thigh...then later again progressed to the inner inner calf. Would you suggest a clearing release and some soft tissue work along the pathways? I do the flossing, get some temp relief sometimes but they come back. It's always worse when lie on my right hand side for some reason.

    Hello @beverleywolstenholme5131, thanks for watching! Unfortunately, I cannot give advice or comment on specific cases without performing a physical examination. That being said, it's possible that numbness and tightness after a knee replacement could be related to nerve issues. Manual therapy, including peroneal nerve release, might help alleviate some of these symptoms by improving nerve mobility and reducing compression. However, I recommend consulting with a healthcare professional who can assess your specific condition in person. Dr. Brian Abelson DC

    Dr. Abelson: My wife has burning pain along the side of her foot from the small toe to the ankle , and no pain or difficulty above the ankle, but if you tap the peroneal nerve along at the spots above the ankle, it sends a shock like sensation down to the area that hurts. Is it possible that your technique would relieve her pain in the foot? The pain is very debilitating, has been around for two years, we have seen doctors, 2 years of physiotherapists, podiatrists, orthopedic surgeons, and are waiting on a neurologist and have the best of orthotics on at all times. Hello, I am 18 years old and dealing with constant pain on the lareral part of my lower leg until down to the foot. It seems its the peroneal nerve. 1 year ago I have been trapped into a brutal plantarflexion ankle lock for 1 minute straight while BJJ. Since then I have chronic pain. I decided to wear compression bandage for months even when sleeping. I also sat crosslegged in school for hours daily to survive the pain. Now I realize all I have done is damaged the nerve. Im very depressed now. Will I heal up when I do those techniques for weeks? I was told if nerve irritation persits for a longer time It will stay forever. I would rather not be alive than feeling this everyday. I dont have any numbness or any function loss of which I know. Just annoying nagging pain. Im very scared. Also can I still walk normally around? Im sorry for these questions. I just dont know what do to anymore. Spent thousands on physio and stuff and they all had the wrong idea. Its the peroneal nerve clearly. Its sore all the time. Waking up, sleeping

    Hello @waqasaqeel4831, thank you for reaching out and for your interest in the video. I must emphasize the importance of following your physician's guidance post-surgery. It is essential to adhere to their recovery plan as they understand the specifics of your case. While I often work with individuals experiencing foot drop, providing personalized medical advice online without a physical assessment would not be appropriate. However, to support your journey, I can direct you to educational resources that might enhance your understanding. On my blog, you'll find comprehensive discussions about various musculoskeletal conditions, including foot drop. For your convenience, articles are organized in a PDF index by body region, which allows you to easily find information pertinent to your condition. I encourage you to review these resources and discuss them with your healthcare provider to determine if they are applicable to your situation. Hello @kaydendelavega8246, Thank you for sharing your experience with the peroneal nerve release demonstration. It's crucial to note that the video is intended as a professional guide for practitioners and not as a self-help resource. The appearance of a bump in your leg and the accompanying increase in pain are concerning and should be assessed by a healthcare professional. Without a personal examination, it's not possible for me to provide a definitive answer to your specific situation. I encourage you to seek a consultation with a healthcare provider who can offer a comprehensive assessment and tailor a treatment plan to your needs.
