Idol talaga kita sir Perf, leaving a band to collaborate and diversify is for me a matured and sound decision for a maestro like you. :) peace

Rivermaya was created by Chito Rono (same as Streetboys) as Universal's answer to The Youth, Ereaserheads and Yano (who were lording the airwaves that time). Only Perf and Nathan had the street cred to the music scene that time. Bamboo's roots is RnB, Rico Blanco and Mark Escueta were still untested. Even with Perf and Nathan, they were a complete newbie to the scene. They were often booed during pocket concerts, Club Dredd gigs and concerts in Amoranto stadium (well even Eraserheads and FrancisM were booed and harassed). Even in NU 107 rock awards 96, where they performed Hilo (even The Breed's Charlie Ysmael was caught smirking). They were booed and heckled. Maybe because musicians and true rock aficionados know they don't have the credentials, especially after Perf left them. I know because I was there. Also band members who have side-projects (just what like Perf did) was normal. This was to express what they cannot do in their main band (e.g. Raymund Marasigan's Planet Garapata, Dominic "Papadom" Gamboa's Runaway Boys, Buwi Meneses' Franco etc). But because Rivermaya was a manufactured-from-showbiz entities band, they (the management) don't understand how a musician feel. Perf leaving Rivermaya, for me, was a very sound decision. I agree to Andrew Corvera's comment. Listen to how Awit ng Kabataan, 214 and even Ulan played vs Perf de Castro less Rivermaya version and you will hear the BIG difference. I saw these 90's bands started, grew and faded. I can say being popular doesn't mean accomplishment as a musician.

In our own backstage lingo, tunog mama na si Perf para sa knila eh, other than Nathan's on point bass playing. He was on a different level and he needed to quench a thirst for music that he knows he couldn't achieve with the band and its management.

Rivermaya survived even after so many years, recorded 13 albums up to date with or without Perf. That was their destiny. Perf is probably the best Pinoy guitarist.

unlike today, bands can collaborate to anyone.. naghihiraman ng members which is actually good.. d katulad dati tali kamay nila s banda, no wonder papalit palit ng myembro.. its really not about the money or fans, they are musicians that needs to grow

Perf de Castro is an icon. I am really happy listening to Rivermaya songs during the 90s but when he oart ways withe band it made be feel bad for one reason. He really brings a lot of energy and songs with his solo lead adlubs really made the song float high above the other bands that time. Without him in the upcoming reunion of Rivermaya will not be perfect without the one who made it perfect in the first place and that"s none other but sir Perf de Castro. More power sir.

Quitting Rivermaya is what he needed and what the band needed as well because even though RB is on the same level as Perf, he was the perfect replacement

Perf is a passionate guitar virtuoso, can you imagine 214 or Awit ng kabataan without him?.. His works with Francis M and Triaxis speaks volumes that only true musicians who can actually play understands. The problem with the music scene here is we are too much influenced by pop culture, everything has to be radio friendly and that creates division between passionate musicians who work on their craft, who only cares for the music and musicians or i should say people who just wanted to be famous.. No wonder we have guys like Vice Ganda and Daniel Padilla with multi-platinum records. The young generation is poisoned with pop culture, autotune crap, everything is rnb and hip-hop, even pinoy rock ballads like Alamid's "Your Love" were revive, rearrange to be more pop friendly, omitting guitar solos then adding cutie pattootie vocals.

No, he's not a virtuoso! I'm not even sure I've ever heard a Filipino guitar virtuoso. Virtuoso are Satriani, Petrucci, Steve Vai and Malmsteen to name a few. Even Tina S. and Dr Viossy would blow Perf away.

PDC is right about the whole thing. Marami kasi sa atin mindset kung saan ka sikat dun ka lang. Meron talagang time na kailangan mo umalis sa limelight dahil yung pag bababad sa kasikatan ng sobra ang sisira sa pagkatao ng isang icon. marami na syang nagawa bilang member. ng rivermaya at immortality nya na yun.

Si Rico Blanco Talaga Ang Pinaka importanteng member Ng Maya . Kahit ilang instrumentalists ipalit mo Basta't nandyan si RB, Rivermaya pa din yan. Majority Ng kanta Ng Maya si RB nag compose. Kahit umalis si Bamboo at Perf nabuhat pa rin nya Ang banda( mas sumikat pa ). Bamboo formed a new band at nag success.. RB pursued a Solo career and still kicking !! Toxic Lang talaga Yung Music Industry nung araw.

100%. Rico Blanco is Rivermaya.

In the early days of Razorback, they declined an offer due to that recording company wants them to create a rock power ballad song... They said that they have no issue against playing a Power Ballad song but being told to do something with their music is a Hell No for them. This is why their song remains original.

Di pa kasi uso ang musical fussion noong panahon…pag rock musician ka dapat doon ka lang…ngayon nag evolve ang music…example tanya markova…they collaborated diff genres to put up something that is unique…parokya ni edgar started having rap parts in their songs…international artist did the same…paramore to more techno and pop…glassjaw vocalist to pop rock songs…nowadays a band member has 2 or more groups with diff genres…pero hindi lang naman yun ang dahilan ng pag-alis or disband…attitudes din syempre tao lang tayo

Back then, having side projects was like considered a taboo for band musicians. As like as what Maestro Perf said, it was some kind of "threat" wherein it's only an outlet for your own musical creativity. Most musicians, especially in the guitar side, have many influences. You can't always express a certain style to a song composed by musicians who have different musical backgrounds.

Not sure how far "back then" you're referring to. But side projects were already a thing in the 80s and 90s. In the 80s, There's Duran Duran who had a side project which is Arcadia. In the 90s, there's Pearl Jam and Soundgarden who had Temple of the Dog. Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam had Mad Season. Pantera also had Down as a side project. It really wasn't a threat if all the side project is about is to have fun. It becomes a threat only when the band is motivated by money which Rivermaya obviously is. Locally, Razorback and Wolfgang occasionally swap bandmates too.

Well, it was all for the best. Perf followed his passion and I salute him for that. But Rivermaya won't be the Rivermaya we know and love if he stayed. Those songs would've been lost to an alternate timeline. And two of the greatest OPM vocalists may not have risen.

i agree with that, i resd some comment not just here but also in other band featured videos people saying this band wouldnt be that great without the voice of without the writing skills of and counting out other band member like they were just xtras.. solos act like a psychedelic dat drowns u deeper in the music..the lyrics and voice were just guides and sudjestion.. add them all and its real music..

It could also be in another timeline, maya also became famous in a different image/style. They could be famous on the piece of their song writings & arrangements specially on perf's lead lines (like 214, and awit ng kabataan).. either way, what happened was still great for both

If only they mend their differences they could had made more legendary music ,rivermaya(orig 5) probably the most talented musician amongst ALL of their peers at that era .

I have my own band but we have differences, the lead guitars was a metal core, the drummer was a reggae bassists and indie, me i'm a experimental/grunge rocker. We're solid in hardcore punk but deep inside it's not us, we parted ways with love and respect. It doesn't mean you left you're out I'm still the Crackheads bassist and always will be. We still brothers but we have our own kind of art in music

I don't know if some people missed it, but Perf sports an "Adobo" shirt that looks like an Adidas spoof. It's one way of saying he's never forgotten his musical beginnings.

Issue nato relevant parin ngayon! When exec., management, manager or third party involve with the band then stir it with politics and business, this is the result! Let them be an artist! Not a salesmen or businessman. An artist! Unless if the issue is within the circle of the band itself, no questions ask!

We may never know what rivermaya could have been if Perf did not leave the band. 1 thing is for sure, we missed a lot of great solos in their next albums.

U can create a hit song w/o solo. Just create a good intro that’s catchy and amazing lyrics. Also a good chord progression. 💯👍👍👍

Well, being in rivermaya is not just a passion in music. Its also a job! And band members should focus on their job. A band without hit songs would not go far and to achieve the goal, to create remarkable music demands time and efforts. Just like the great chester bennington said, you have to eat it, drink it, sleep with it!

He gained respect to what he love most and he did not compromise..

this interview answered my question.. naisip ko sana di na lang sya umalis at nagsideband na lang to express yung bawal sa rivermaya..yun na pla yung ginawa nya pinigilan lang ng mkikitid isip...

una mayaman na si Perf, he owns a recording studio at sya ang producer ng Rivermaya's first album. Marami pa sya na produce mga notable Wolfgang (“Semenelin”), Francis M (FreeMan and FreeMan II), and Marc Velasco (Epic). Ayaw nya maging permanent sa banda in fact gusto nya puro session. A professional guitarist who can read notes he played with a lot of reputable musicians. He pursued his passion and experience a wide variety of genres unlike musicians na stuck playing their same hit songs every gig. With all that said as a musician with those experience, that's an achievement na masasabi ko beats fame and fortune.

He did nOt want to stAy in RivermAya because he felt he was greater than the bAnd itself as fAr as musical talent was concerned. He was in direct conflict with the musical direction of the bAnd.

Well, now I know. I think they patched things up already, seing as 4 original/first members played together in 2016.

Para sakin i think ok na din na one album lang yung tinagal ni Perf sa RM. Kumbaga tinulungan nya yung Maya makaagos and once the ship is sailing, nafulfill na ni Perf purpose nya.

Kung yung sarili ko nman gusto ang ggwin ko at wla akong pagsisisihan bandang huli .. sa banda kasi di nman talaga yan nagtatagal ng matagal na matagal .. kasi darating ang panahon magkakaron na din sila ng kanya kanyang kagustuhan gawin pra sa mga sarili nila gaya ng mag solo artist or mag iba ng group band na akma! Sa panlasa ng kanyang bagong tugtugan .. habang tumatagal kasi lalo pa silang gumagaling at lalo pa sila nakakaisip ng mas maganda pra sa mga sarili nilang buhay ... gaya ng the beatles .. kalaunan nagkahiwa hiwalay din dhil naiba na din ang tema ng tugtugan ni jhon lennon .. gusto nya ng mag solo pra mas mailabas nya ang tunay na galing at talent nya pagdting sa musika .... naging succesful nman sya sa career nya ... kya nga lang maaga syang pumanaw ... yun lang!

Remember Rivermaya is not a college band but a manufactured. Each member came from different origins and have their own dreams. One good thing was they auditioned with talents specializing their instruments. Bamboo = The voice, Rico = The Poet and Melody Maker, Perf = Guitar Vertouso, Mark = Drum Machine, Nathan = Bass Man !

Technical playing or learning technical elements is not talent all the time but yes academic and you've acquired these things because you study. But Rico is a different animal see, melodies just came in just a minute that's so natural for him and that's magic. Magic and creativity is pure talent !

thats a really good metaphor if you will, the last part of what perf said. yah cant eat adobo for the rest of your life. you have to have some kind of diversity to further develop your creativity by collaborating with other artist.ya cant stick with ur band all the time or you will burn out

Perf is the most important guy in maya aside from bamboo at rico..the fact of the matter is kayang mag blend ni Perf sa kahit anong banda locally and internationally..from wolfgang to the jerks to anything.. i think ang problem nila before ay yung managers nilang si lizza nakpil at chito rono..na hinawakan sila sa leeg ng husto.

anu daw? after ng first album ng rivermaya at wala na si perf, hindi na ko fan ng rivermaya. hindi na sila rock para sakin nung umalis si perf, parang pangbenta na lang. I acknowledge rico's song-writing skills, but it will really sound bland kung wala ang skill ng isang perf de castro. so saying that he is not the best guitarist that rivermaya has ever had is simply ridiculous.

Commercialism exclusivity kills artistry

Magaling talaga si sir Perf at hindi maitatanggi yun. Noong umalis siya para gawin ang gusto niya sa musika hindi naman nawala ang Rivermaya sa ere o noong umalis na si Bamboo. Si Rico naman pinagpatuloy ang banda at nagawa niya pa ma continue ito hanggang nag solo siya. May kanya kanya lang talagang gusto ang tao kahit na hindi kasing galing ni Perf o Bamboo pa yan ang performance basta gusto nila ang ginawang kanta kahit naka acoustic pa yan ay tatangkilikin nila yan. May mga member talaga ng banda na aalis at kung saan sila masaya gagawin nila ang gusto nila solo man o collab. Pasalamat nalang tayo naging part silang lahat ng Rivermaya.

ito talaga problema kapag may record label ka na. they will tell you they own your soul. they want you to be their slave and everything you do should be monitized by this corporate assholes. They will not even allow you to play for free during family gatherings, that's the sad part.

not necessarily. kami ng banda ko 13 years ago, nagagawa naming pagsabayin ang tugtog pera at tugtog battle, sa battle heavy metal kamo, pero siyempre pagdating sa tugtog pera, iba na naman ang genre namin, ang pinagkaiba lanh, yung tugtog pera ang outlet at yung banda na sumasali sa mga battle anh main band. yung pang gig line up, nagpapalit palit ng position ang mga band members naging swerte lang na multi instrumentalist yung ibang members ng banda, pati yung mga P.A namin.

Still the best maya album was the first one with Perf!

Mas nagustuhan ko ang RM nung inilabas nila ang Trip album, doon sila mas nakilala na kaya nilang maging bigatin without Perf at nagawa naman nila

I wonder why most of the comments here bash rivermaya members (old line up) in favor of perf leaving the band haha when its just a simple case of perf being in the wrong band. To point out bluntly perf can be easily replaced and his sound was only a novelty in the mix.

hell no. perf is perf. novelty? pinakinggan mo ba yung unang album? compare and contrast perhaps? lol. dont u ever say that perf is just a novelty because all the guitarist that replaced him cant even get close to the parts that perf written in the early rivermaya days.

Ganyan din naman yata gagawin ko pag nag tampo ako. edi aalis din ako punta sa gusto kong gawin.

musical difference... more on blues kasi si Perf, iba yung gustong tugtog o idea sa mga compositions nya.

Parehong problema kay SLASH, ayaw ni AXL maki collab si slash sa ibang banda isa na dun yung kay MJ

So it's similar to what happened with Jason Newsted of Metallica: Newsted was not allowed to have side projects with other bands besides Metallica. Sa nakikita ko rin, ego problem ni Rico ang dahilan ng pag-alis ni Perf.

Pero da best pa rin yung drumming sa simula ng Ulan...✌️

Rivermaya was an adobo type of a band in the early days until they turn into a chopsuey type when they began experimenting melodies and music from the 60's 70's, 80's they combined the Beatles, Brit pop. Depeche Mode, Bowie and The Cure.

Perf should form a rock band here in states that will be heard like Death Angel in SF...

I wonder kung ano yung story sa side naman ng kabila.. anyway, agree naman ako sa kanya. kung naging ganun yung situation na hindi ka na masaya, ano pang sense to stay.

Perf is 100% correct.. you cannot grow if you are restricted to explore and experiment. You cannot control an artist to the direction you want.. the management should have been more supportive to him

Nagexplore sia kasi bata pa. Unfortunately hindi gaano nagclick yung binuo niyang banda. Well ganyan talaga ang buhay. Minsan hindi maganda maging mapusok. Aminin natin milyones kinita ng Rivermaya kahit wala na si Perf kasi sumikat pa rin mga later songs nila However, at least sinubukan nia. No regrets din siguro si Perf. Maybe money is not everything.

Sayang perfect sana ang River maya they have rico bamboo and perf iba talaga mga guitar riffs niya compare noong si rico na ang naging lead guitars ng River maya.
