He gets all the praise, and rightly so, but it’s also fair to give some to the rest of the band as well for patiently waiting for him to recover and adjust to his new drums rather than replacing him to try and continue riding the wave of success from their last album. A band like Guns N’ Roses would’ve replaced him immediately after the first hospital visit

  • @BoondockRoberts

Drummer Allen had both arms for the Pyromania Album (rock of Ages, etc) lost it in a car accident. What's interesting is it shows how tight knit this band is because when they visited him in the hospital, they had no intentions of replacing him or considering him quitting. They just asked "what do you need?" and they designed a kit that he could work with. (many left hand are now controlled with foot pedals)

All of them were doing drugs and drinking a lot of alcohol at the time of Rick's accident. When they united behind his recovery and return to the band they all, with the exception of Steve Clark the guitarist, kicked their drug and alcohol habits. When Rick was on the road to recovery he and the others then united to try and help Steve to kick his drug habit and it seemed like it worked. But after Hysteria hit it big, Steve went back to drugs when the fame and constant demands got too much for him again. Back then, clinical depression was not a thing yet. They blamed all his problems on the drugs when it was the drugs that were helping him to cope. As his depression and guilt over letting his friends down grew, he took more and more until one day he overdosed himself. He was such a great musician... he will forever be missed. RIP Steve Clark.

I love seeing people react to this band - I think someone made it 3 songs before they realized that Rick has 1 arm. He has always played barefoot, and the kit allows him to use his feet to compensate. He has the pedals programmed differently for different tracks, so he has to remember what program he is on to know where each drum sound is. He has been a professional drummer since he was 12.

The band has been together since they were kids, so their chemistry is on point! =D Rick Allen lost his arm when he was 21. He joined Def Leppard at 15. He told them to get another drummer, but they refused, choosing to stay beside him and wait until he was healed and re-taught himself how to play. He has a special drum kit, in which his left foot pedal would emulate what his left arm could do. He still had PTSD from the accident to this day, and sees drumming as therapeutic. It's funny that you say that he's rapping, cause they've said that this could be a rap song. XD

Great reaction. You're not wrong about rock intertwining different genres. That is why there are so many subgenres in rock. Artists and musicians grew up years ago surrounded by blues, big band music, classical, soul, etc. All of these things influence people differently and they incorporate it into their own styles. Next thing you know, you have some brand new fusion and BAM..subgenre #57 is born. This song is from the 80s and yes, it was a banger then and it still is now. It was a monster hit. Rick Allen made up for the loss of his arm with a special drum kit that allowed him to use his feet. Totally amazing..

If you look closely at the drummer's cockpit, you will catch a glimpse at the array of foot pedals he is surrounded by. This def leppard album was produced to blend their bedrock guitarists' delight with the body-groove of b-boy /club beats and echoplex modulation. I love that you're feeling the hip hop breakbeat in this track's fusion; this resonates with my feeling that this particular album has contributed a handful of timeless gems, and that these tracks still foster inspirational and innovative influence to many of the brilliant legacies of creative groovology and the miracle of novel styles.

What I love about this sound are the great rhythms and syncopation created between the drums and the guitar/vocals. As for the connection between Rock and Rap/R&B... Well if you go back far enough, the DNA of virtually all modern American music goes back to black American music. The only real exceptions that come to mind are like Bluegrass, and "classical" compositions.

This is by far one of the greatest stories of true friends. The band was on the verge of fame when their drummer lost his arm in a tragic car accident. The other band members decided to wait for him to come back before recording any new music. And, they were as big if not bigger after his return. He uses a combination of electronic drums and foot pedals. (That’s a super over simplification).

Good song, from a pretty decent band. You need to hear some of the hard rockin' women of rock. Joan Jett and the Black Hearts--Bad Reputation, Light of Day; Pat Benetar--Love is a Battlefield, Hell is for Children; Heart--Barracuda, Crazy on You. You just need to hear them.

I subscribed to your channel precisely due to your fresh insight and abundant understanding of how music "works". So many people fall into a rut, following a single band, or even a single genre, and never experience the wealth of variety that music provides. It is so inspiring to see you discovering these new vistas, like opening a whole new world to you that others discovered in parallel with you.

Been waiting for someone on some reaction channel to suggest Great White. It is their most famous song but is also a cover song. They gave many awesome songs! Thought it was cool that they had one album called once bitten and the next album after that twice shy.

@@zosozildjianmagick1790 That's probably why they get forgotten about. They had two albums with names that didn't come up with and their biggest hit is a cover. Had they used that music and gave it a title and different words, it probably would've been huge and they would've stayed around longer. But Once Bitten Twice Shy came out in 1989? 2 to 3 years later, 80s hair, glam rock was dead. Motley Crue fell off. Poison, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Ratt, and Cinderella. Guns n Roses made it though because they weren't really a hair band. They didn't wear makeup and spandex and have teased hair. They were a rock band and that's why their success carried them a little bit into the 90s. By 1993 and 1994, Guns n Roses was pretty much over because they fought all the time.

You’re correct in noticing the rap similarities. The lead singer has stated many times that that was exactly what they were doing when they created and performed this song! And yes, the very first thing they came up with was the hook lyric, _pour some sugar on me!_

In their beginning, The Rolling Stones said they were a r&b band. They listened r&b and played r&b, Muddy Waters for example who accidentally named the group. Rock was not "invented" yet. They (and The Beatles and other groups) took black music and made it global. And they have influenced rock bands all of these years.

This song has a rap beat because the formula was heavily influenced by these kinds of beats, something that Joe Elliott talks about in interviews about the album. Steve Clark, who helped write a lot of this era's music, loved blending music types and bring things in from all over.

Rick Allen is known as the Thunder God. After losing his arm in an auto accident he didn’t let that stop him. He loved playing the drums so much he designed a drum machine for him to use his left leg for everything his arm would’ve been doing. Check out some of his interviews on KZread. It’s really amazing. The best thing about Def Leppard is they’re more like a family than a band the way they stood behind Rick Allen and waited for him to get his drum kit together.

  • @Mpetrillo59

Yes, the drummer has one arm. He lost an arm in a car accident and the band waited for him to have a custom drum set made so he could learn to use one of his feet as his missing arm. December 19, 1987, I saw this concert for the tour of this album, Hysteria, the first album released after Rick lost his arm. The show was “in the round”- the stage was in the middle of the coliseum, with the stage slowly rotating so we could all watch Rick play with one arm. I’m 61 years old, and I’ve seen hundreds of concerts in my lifetime. I’ve seen Def Leopard 4 times. To this day, that Hysteria concert was the best concert I’ve ever seen. ❤️❤️❤️🤘🏼🤘🏼
