This game really shows how important psychology is in chess. Getting an unexpected draw offer can really catch you off guard, but in my experience having your own offer rejected is way worse. So even though it can make us insecure, I try to remember that declining in most cases does give me the psychological advantage. Imagining the opponent being like, "Oh no, she thinks she can beat me with only 4 minutes left, my position must be worse than I thought, is there something I'm not seeing?!"

"I spent 30 minutes here, which was obviously completely stupid" - I came here today after watching the live stream just to hear you say this line. This is brilliant. I believe that in the past you would have tried to justify the time spent, and not fully connected this with the time pressure that you ended up in. And yes G takes is the better of the 2 moves, but neither move is even remotely bad, and so blowing 30 minutes on the position is what cost you the game, which is the one thing I didn't hear from you here that I would have liked to. But this report on the game feels like a REALLY positive step forward for you in your self assessment, and hopefully in your confidence in yourself going forward. Well done!! (And big up to Pia for keeping your confidence up after you came off and saw that you were ahead when you offered the draw. Even you realising that the only reason you offered a draw was because he had previously is great self awareness.) 👏👏👏👏👏👏 Tied for first, that can;t be bad!!

I understand about chess terminology and all that, but it was encouragement against self doubt, and I still give her the credit. It was in the context of a game. I've coached many seasons of girls and womens soccer, and that sort of positive reinforcement, particularly when a player hasn't sensed it themselves, and it comes from someone who knows, has materialized into a greater performance, always. I'm not talking about "everybody gets a trophy" but unlocking potential those individual players didn't have the confidence to see themselves. And that accurate instruction, as reported to me later privately by parents, has materialized positively in many realms beyond soccer, academically and personally.

That was my point, too, takumi, that Pia's comment was in the context of that particular game and play. See above for my further explanation/explication. What I said is not in opposition to your comment. My perspective is the result of decades as a university/academy/club soccer coach (and previously a player at those same levels). It's just a recognition that reinforcing a player's correct decision in a game when they are in doubt encourages them to accurately see their own assets and capitalize on them.@@takumi2023

Anna your combination of playing with your mom's commentary and then doing the retrospective sharing your thoughts is amazing. I think that you are correct that it exposes you to more preparation but they always underestimate your primary strength which is creative thinking under pressure. I agree that you thought a little long on the one move mostly because you doubt how good you really are lol but consider that at the start there always seems to be a relaxed atmosphere where folks are not concerned about time but if you consider every second is precious from the start, don't be a second late and use your opponents time to clean glasses etc. maybe it recovers a few extra minutes for the end game. Worst case try giving yourself a 15 min limit and then trust Anna by going with what you think is best because you are instinctively a great player. I love watching you play and hearing your comments and thinking, you are an amazing ambassador for chess. I haven't played in years but have been playing puzzles almost daily since watching you and recently even best a 1400. Thank you for sharing your energy and passion.

Self-recognition of your psychological state, that you were seeing ghosts and such, is a powerful tool for making a good decision. The difference in remaining time was also a big factor favoring you taking the draw. I'm surprised he offered the draw with you having so little time.

3:38 I want to explore what could happen if your bishop took that black d4 pawn. But I can't think far enough ahead about the possibilities. It is like I have to train my mind to see the board after 2 or 3 moves have been played, before they are played. To be able look at a future board position, with pieces in place where they are currently not in place, so you can analyze the near future positions, is a skill IMO that separates the best from the rest. Again Bobby Fischer called it, "Seeing the board in you Minds Eye" on a TV interview, (before moves are made but as they will have been made, so you can analyze the new position on the fly).

Nothing wrong with yielding sometimes, taking a draw, learning lessons to take forward with you to future games ans coming back stronger for the next game after a good sleep 😉. Good luck!!

Anna when offered a draw thinking "what would my dad do?" After the Spanish part of her calms down and the Cramling part of her gets control back "lets draw!"
