This is my occupied alibi: In my book, the killer is in full view by a group when people hear the gunshot (which both everyone and no one hears due to a hunting party) by it’s revealed that the person who pulled the trigger shot a dead man as the real killer actually poisoned the victim

I always find examples helpful, so I use them whenever possible. Finding them takes up a significant chunk of my scripting time!

@@janekalmes I am definitely the type of person who learns by example. I can only imagine how long you spend on gathering them! It is much appreciated. I have always loved to read books on the writing craft. Now that I am planning a cozy, I have turned to books and blogs specifically about writing mysteries. Many of them reiterate the same basic things. It would seem that there is only so much to know or consider about planning a mystery. Then I found your KZread channel! You offer insights and ideas that I have not seen elsewhere. It is really helping me plan my book. I just wanted to thank you! If you ever publish a book (or a series of books) on writing mysteries, I know it will be a great success! Cheers! Kris

You need to put your brilliant thoughts in the book and call it something like "anatomy of mystery novel". I read "How to Write a Mystery" and your videos so much better and much more useful

I am thinking about how to make something like that work. I’m thinking of calling it, “Let Your Mystery Write Itself.” Not sure exactly what, but I’d like to give it a name that implies that once you understand these structures, the construction of a mystery novel can be very easy!

So I have been planning a cozy mystery. But in the senorio the killer doesn't plan an alibi but hopes the fact it was committed in the middle of the night makes the others lack an alibi. But In the night the sleuth is awoken by a scream and glass shattering and goes outside of his room to find the killer and a guest talking the killer had already committed the crime and had went back upstairs. Would this work as an alibi? P.S the killer had no part in the scream or the sound of the glass breaking.

I'm not sure I understand... is the villain outside or has he already gone upstairs. In any case, I think it's fine for the villain to get some good luck that makes his alibi look better than it is!

Great video, Jane! Can't wait for the future deep dives; I'm ready with my scuba gear :-) Could you tell me if this is an example of a decoy alibi? In Father Brown Mysteries, the killer (the owner of a hedonistic hotel) switched places with her maid servant as nobody knew the identity of the Madam (the hotel is in the middle of nowhere). This gave her (a game hunter who likes hunting animals of ALL kinds) the freedom to hunt down guests without raising suspicion. Father Brown was able to solved the mystery (and murders) as he picked up on slight inconsistencies between what the Madam said to her guests and her behaviour. Since she used her maid servant as a decoy to cover her murders, could that work? Or would that be something else entirely?

I think I would call that a Decoy Murder, albeit with the twist that the reason the decoy worked is not because of a costume or disguise, but because no one can visually identify the Madam. But that’s the fun part of these structures, figuring out innovative ways to implement them!

@@janekalmes Oh, Decoy Murder! Do you have any examples of Decoy Murder (for future videos)? I found it to be a clever twist and not something I usually see in cosy mysteries.
