When I first get started with trying to get the lawn of my new property into proper shape, the biggest attraction and pro of the ryegrass is its quick germination and ease of establishment. As a newbie to lawn care, I found other grass type a little intimidating, requiring many more days of continuous watering; a task made more complicated by not having in-ground sprinkler system. With the quick germination and establishment, it ryegrass gives beginners like myself the confidence and encouragement necessary to keep on working on the lawn as we can see the result quickly.

You're my "lawn guy" as far as youtube goes. I'm in zone 7A and am waiting to put down my ryegrass seed in my back yard garden. I know I know, spring isn't the best time, but it's a new house, and it's full of chickweed and nettles with almost no grass so I have to till all that up and take a chance on the grass seed. It's been so warm here this winter I'm itching to do it now as we are due for another week of temperatures I'm the 50's. I enjoy your videos and am looking forward to trying your seed shortly as I will need more than I currently have.

I am Virginia Beach and planted your perennial rye grass in mid November. Yes, that was way too late but I wanted to give it a try. There was a couple of frosts during the first week the seed was down and I was afraid nothing would come up. But I was thrilled when I came back in town from thanksgiving vacation and saw a haze of green on my entire front yard. Definitely, a little bit slower to germinate with temps much colder in late November but I had full coverage and even got to mow it before Christmas. Can't wait for it to take off this spring so I can get my reel mower on it. thanks for all your wonderful videos and products.

Hey Ryan, we over seeded our football field(hybrid bermuda) last fall with Perennial ryegrass. Turned out great. Most say kill off the rye but I’m wondering if maybe instead keep the rye, mow it really low, keep it watered of course and see if the bermuda does well with it. Then overseed in the fall. I know the foot traffic will tear up the rye part some but do you feel like if we spoon feed it, keep it low & watered it can withstand Tennessee summer weather?

I had some Ryegrass mixed in parts of my yard here in Denver, Colorado and a lot of it didnt survive the winter. Winter here was very cold from November onwards and long stretches of dry weather. It didnt seem hardy enough for the full sun zones. The Turf Type Tall Fescue was money though. It did great. KBG does great but it really cant survive the dry and hot summers here if watering is not heavy and with perfect coverage. I have not seen KBG spread well here at all. If even a small 4' section dies off the healthy grass next to it does not creep over. Nothing. Maybe its the drier air and the high elevation.

Looks very good. I love the stripes. I live in Northern Kentucky. We have summers that range from eighty and ninety degrees fahrenheit. My front lawn is in direct sunlight most of the day. I am thinking of doing a full lawn renovation. Down to the dirt. I want to put in grass that will be soft to walk on and be awesome for stripes. I also want to have a thick lawn that will choke out weeds and pesty grasses like Crab grass and saw grass. If I have to over seed every year so be it and water it once a day that is fine. I appreciate any help, advise and suggestions. Maybe a video idea. Would be awesome my friend. Keep up the great work. Your lawn is absolutely beautiful. And the striper system that I saw on one of your videos works great on my Honda hrn 216 mower. Thank you for that as well.

I would go with Turf Type Tall Fescue no question. Water heavily once a week if there is no rain and you are good. It grows from seem easily and pretty quickly. If you do your part you will get 90-95% survival through the first winter if you seed in the fall with good weather throughout. You might need to overseed the next season to have thick coverage edge to edge. Weeds wont stand a chance if you use pre-emergent and spot kill broadleaf weeds with 24d in spring as they pop up. It will get thick and green.

There are "spreading" types but it's not very aggressive at all to fill in like bluegrass does over time. I don't find it to be any issues because it grows so quickly from seed when you need to fix a spot here or there.

Has anyone used peat moss to cover their lawn after seeding? It seems as if it would be a very unreasonable cost at ~$24 for 3 cubic feet. my front lawn is 1200 sqft.

Grass seeds loves peat moss as top dressing. It holds moisture, a good start for any seeds.

Do you think Rye would survive 100 degree heat waves with enough soil wetter and irrigation?

  • @ryanknorrlawncare

If it's just a few waves of that then it would likely be fine but you also have to watch fungus closely when it's hot and irrigated

@@ryanknorrlawncare I'm in Australia with dry 40 degree Celsius days in summer, we don't get them for 3 months straight but we can sometimes get a whole week of it. I have irrigation though.

Some ryegrass (SRO Champion GQ) proven to grow in Tucson where we have 90->110 degree days for 6 months of the year. These are paired with a bermudagrass and receive constant irrigation though, but heat tolerant types do exist.

I use a perennial rye grass seeds for new ground that has no grass. If you lay out this see it will grow and keep your dirt from eroding. It's easy to maintain and grows easily it's not the best seed but if you have no irrigation and need to lay in grass , this is the seed that you can use.

Should mention that perennial ryegrass might not survive a cold winter in cold climates.

Rye has too many stalks for my taste. I don’t have thing set up to go low, so I keep my lawn at a medium height. Rye throws up the stalks, which just look ugly.

I love RPR. The color is really cool, but it is lighter. This will be its third year in full intense Colorado sun, and it actually went fully dormant this winter. I'm excited to see how much this helps plus I'm going to let it wake up on it's own this year without pushing Nitrogen. I'm so excited!
