Perception Triumph 13 Kayak Rudder kit Installation.
If you’re looking to install a rudder kit on a Perception Triumph 13 kayak, you have come to the right place. I’m sharing my experience of the installation of one of Perception’s ‘kayak specific’ kits to my own kayak. The kit was purchased online from Cornwall Canoes.
Before I began my install, I searched KZread and the internet for information and realised there wasn’t (as far as I was aware) a video on the installation to the Triumph 13.
I’ll show you how I fitted the rudder and share with you some tips which made the installation easier, and also some points to be aware of before you start. It took me around three hours to fit but I spent much longer as I was faffing about videoing (and drinking coffee). Take your time, measure several times and you’ll get a good result with this kit.

Hi Nigel, The fitting of the rudder is not too tricky, just take your time and remember step 4A, the coffee. If you have any questions let me know. The Triumph 13 is a smashing kayak I'm sure you'll have some great adventures with it. Phil.

Great vid...i need to get and fit one on my 13 for sure. How does that middle hatch with the dry bag detatch? Well...I just ordered the rudder....thanks for the inspiration to finally get it. I moved up scotland a few years ago....and have only taken the 13 out once in breezy conditions on an exposed loch. It made me realise I needed the rudder.

Just had a look...the dry bag just pops out. Erm....what about the fixings for lowing and raising the rudder....how do they work?...coz there is no way to get a hand on the inside that far back.

Hi, the middle hatch / bag just pops out and the you can access inside hull. Take your time fitting and it will be fine 👍

The rudder raising and lowering controls are on the outside of the kayak. The 'left / right' controls go inside and involve using a drill bit as a weight. Attach the bit to the end of the control line with some tape. Then poke the drill bit through the hole and inside the kayak. Lift the rear of the kayak up and shake. The drill bit will fall down towards the seat pulling the control line with it.

@@anotherangleUK I have just finished installation. It took hours and hours...but I got it done. I didn't risk getting my elbow thru the deck hatch...I had to get the Mrs out to get her arm in so she could check that the lines had gone thru the handles. Getting the nut on the far bolt was a hassle but was just about doable. I'm glad it's over...it was all very finicky.

You did right taking your time over the installation and getting it right first go. Glad the video helped a bit. Enjoy using the kayak with the rudder, it does make a difference.
Great video - planning on buying the kit this summer - any issues with using it in the sea? Salt affecting the lines etc? 👍

I've not had any issues with using the rudder in salt water. It seems well designed with quality materials. Obviously early days as I only fitted it a few months back - I certainly don't anticipate future problems. 👍

I’d like to do some sea trials in challenging conditions to make a judgement on the rudders effects (hopefully positive) on handling. You’re quite right - a part two will be filmed sometime. 👍
