How to fix broken Hobie Up/Down rudder cable for less than $10

I searched for over 2 hours and could not find a video on how to fix a broken up/down cable for the rudder on the Hobie Pro Angler 12 so I made this for anyone else that needs to fix theirs. I did find a full replacement cable online, but besides the cost of nearly $100 I couldn't find a guide on how to get inside the stern where the cable ran to thread the new cable through the pulley. Plus, this is likely to happen again over normal wear and tear so having only a splice to replace seems beneficial. I suspect the cable and design is similar to other model Hobie's, but if I am wrong please let me know of Hobie models this doesn't apply to so I can note in the comments for future viewers. The total fix was less than $9. I paid $8 for fifty feet of 1/8 inch cable and the swivel is less than 50 cents. Bonus is I now have cable for the future which is the same cable used for the skeg. Will definitely keep this in my truck from now on. I hope this helps someone get back on the water.

Thanks for the video Phil!!. Just yanked the "up rope" off my 2018 Outback! :( Just like you, started searching for answers and Your Video was the only one out there! Hopefully, my replacement will be similar to yours. 👍🙂

I have an 09 Pro Angler and the sleeve the string goes through is missing and mine is cutting into the plastic. I thought maybe if I put a pulley in front of it that would help. I bought a pulley before looking inside the hull... The exact same pulley I bought is hanging in the line inside the kayak. At 1:20 you showed exactly where my pulley fell off the string that holds it I was going to screw mine into the side. I gave you a thumbs up and subscribed. All I do lately is kayak repairs on my channel, Thanks!!

Solid DIY fix! After 5 years and all that friction I’m not surprised that cable is going especially for how much you fish. I’ve been doing a few mods to my kayak here lately and it’s definitely fun.

Thanks dude! Yeah man dry rot and fraying from the friction is bound to happen. Will make sure to put paraffin or grease on the new one to make it last longer.

@@fishinwithphillip Yeah I was just wondering if some wax that you put on a bow string would help maybe limit some of that friction?

Thanks for that. I have a PA manufactured in 2011 with a lot of use in fresh and salt water. Surprisingly to me the steering and rudder deploy cables are originals and still seem ok. I'm going on a backcountry trip soon and I fully expect something to give. I'm bringing some dynema cord and a few tools that should get me out of a jam.

You are welcome, Steve! I slowly add things to keep for road trips. Cord is one and recently I adopted keeping a Gator Patch on hand. I had a leak in one of the worst possible spots right where the Lowrance ready indent was welded together. It sealed that bad boy right up! I was shocked it worked so well and easy. I made a short video on that as well. Thank you for the support!

You could probably run an entire new line in from the tube at the rudder with some mechanics wire which would eliminate the blind not you've gotta tie

I am sure you could. I thought of something similar, but you only have one shot to get it right. I was going on a week long trip and wanted something that was a guarantee. Please make a video and share if you give it a try. There was no information out there on how to fix and that's why I made this one.

Hoping you can see this comment. I just got a used 2020 hobie PA12 and i noticed in the front hatch there are two pulleys. one is connected to the transducer and the other has nothing running through it. Based on you video it looks like the pulley that’s not attached to anything may be the rudder. Any advice?

The second pulley is for your up/down rudder cable from what you are describing. I hope this helps.

My AI island has no cables for up down on side to side. I would buy but trying to find seems very difficult. Getting access to run it to handles which are broken is nearly impossible. Is there a external rudder system?

The cable is just 1/8 inch paracord so I bought it on Amazon. Looks like Harbor Freight has it for $2.99 for 50 ft. www.harborfreight.com/18-in-x-50-ft-paracord-56740.html
