You make me realise that mood can give a slanted perception of communications, and any interactions preceding. Preconceived ideas and non-verbals, as you have said in previous videos also play a part. My family grew up with the idea that "If we like you, we'll pick on you". Made us tough but not to be used in the work place.

These kind of classes should she sharing in all companies, schools and colleges because everyone has different perceptions of communicaction. As a student and worker i want to have better skills and understand more people i'm sure with your videos i will achieve it.

Coach Alex, I really appreciate your video and the way you put things into perspective. From my personal experience I really believe this video should be shared to big corporations or business. I have had colleagues that have had personal experiences like the text book explained to us where a manager is under the impression the employee is not a very good sales person. Little did the manager and the employee know there was a lack of communication between the two and could came up with a solution themselves. Both of them had a fundamental attribution error and had a defensive bias towards each other.

Thank you for this, I can share this in my "Aspie"/ Autist support group, I didn't realize I fit "on the Spectrum" until in my 30s... I don't tell most people... they don't need to know... my communication has Improved with lots of emotional counseling & studying friends' interactions, I don't have a diagnosis, not sure how neurodivergent I am... I tend to gravitate or connect with others who think like me... other neurodivergents

Be very cognizant of tonal cue generalizations. Chronic pain, traumatic brain injuries, brain tumours and associated treatments, hearing difficulties, tinnitus all affect tonal cues. Prosody linguistics might be a great addition to this discussion.

I appreciated your dog analogy. I once did a group exercise where we were asked to visualize a bucket being filled with water. Some people imagined a blue bucket at a spigot, others a small red bucket in a tub. Some were lowes buckets and others home depot. Each of our perspectives were formed based off of our life experiences and our perceptions. If something as insignificant as a bucket can be interpreted a million different ways, i can only imagine how many more perspectives are in play to be misunderstood on a hot button topic... Maybe a google 🤣

When I was studying abroad in a foreign country and didn’t know the language very well, my host mom told me that I came across as rude and uninterested in everything. I was so surprised as I’ve heard the opposite so many times growing up. Apparently I come across as rude when I’m all quiet and answer short cuz I’m not familiar with the language

These are great topics. People who immigrate to the USA have so much problems at these fronts because they get judged/ misunderstood at so many levels due to these natural faulty perceptions, putting them at disadvantage when it comes to communicating the true meaning of things they want to put across. Verbal and non-verbal. Same goes for people who immigrate to any other country, not just US.

3:55. I’ll admit, I fear asking. I fear what I THINK about how I come across to others and how others actually perceive me may not jive.

I hear you, Mike. It takes courage to ask for feedback of any sort. I tell myself, "Well, Alex, if there's a negative perception about your out there, you don't want to be the last to know." Plus, I have found that some feedback I received doesn't end up leading to something I need to change in the end. For example, I was once told (about how I present myself on camera and the image I give off on my website) that I really need to "present myself more as if I'm a celebrity" and to make it seem like I'm famous rather than as a teacher/professor. I just laughed because that had nothing to do with me really. That was just the other person's view of how *_they'd_* like to come across. In other words, I'm guessing you'll only really want to change a % of the items you get feedback about.
