Mind the Gap Between Perception and Reality | Sean Tiffee | TEDxLSCTomball

Can we ever know what’s real? Communication scholar Sean Tiffee examines the relationship between perception and reality and questions the intersection between the two. In this talk, he advises us not to mind the gap, but to mine the gap and become a more loving and empathic person.
Sean is a voracious reader and estimates that he reads more than five hours a day. He has a PhD in Rhetoric and Langage from the University of Texas. He has taught Communication Studies courses at the University of Texas, Texas State University, and Austin Community College. He currently teaches at Lone Star College - Tomball.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Perception, two people can interpret the same thing in two vastly different ways. This is because we are constructing concepts in our mind as we receive information. And what is constructed is influenced by our own personal unique experiences, beliefs, etc. This talk points out that process and hopefully shows that your perception is unique and not necessarily indicative of reality, or even the intended meaning. So think about how you interpret something before running with it.

One thing that Sean Tiffee stated which really resonated with me was when he stated " when there is a constant reminder that I am perceiving the world my way and not the real way then I can have empathy towards others". Understanding and having empathy is a complete behavioral change, because the ability to have empathy completely changes how we react and interact with other in and outside of a work place setting. Currently in our society I believe that the lack of empathy in individuals is a leading factor in why people are afraid of change.

The gap is a canyon in my estimation. Not only how far we are from true reality but it is stifled by us agreeing on what reality is and missing the mark completely. Why we are here, what our purpose is, what happens after, are all influential to the now, what it means, and humans know nothing of any of this.

We are all different in the same ways, We are born to adapt and servive, perceptions is learned thru the knowledge in of one's mind experiences, and we naturally feel it as good or bad, and this is practice and learned , from the moment you learned to remember. Since born to to servive we start to adapt from when 1. You learne to cry for food 2. Others Tone of voice 3. People's faces or 4. Curiosity killed the cat, (what get you in trouble) 5. And finally realising one day life will end, scares you the most when your 7 or 10 years old, things get more personal from there on.. what can u do? I completely agree that we need to open our minds and hearts to the experiences of others to understand and empathize with fellow humans. To say that we don't have access to reality, though? What are we living in, a Super Mario world? If our "reality" is never the same as others' "realities", then we can never come to a consensus on things that matter, and we will forever be divided. How sad.

So my reality is different than your reality even if we look at the same thing. THIS SIMPLE CONCEPT THAT SIMPLIFIES ALL OF THE ABOVE IN NINE WORDS AND CHANGES OUR LIVES AND HELP US ACHIEVE THE MOST THAT THIS GIVEN LIFE-EXPERIENCE THAT WE LIVE IS THIS: "THE POINT OF POWER IS IN THE PRESENT MOMENT" SO FORGET THE PAST, JUST USE IT AS FEEDBACK OF WHAT WAS DONE AND DON'T LOOK AT IT AS A MISTAKE BUT AS A SPRINGBOARD FOR THE EXPERIENCES LEARNED THAT HAS SHAPED YOUR LIFE INTO WHAT YOU ARE TODAY, NOT AS A WASTE OF TIME BUT AS ACCUMULATED KNOWLEDGE YOU CAN USE TO COMPARE YOUR POSITION IN THE PRESENT. ALSO, FORGET THE FUTURE WHICH DOESN'T EXIST YET, IT WILL ONLY BE WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT BY FOCUSING IN "THE PRESENT MOMENT" AND EMPOWER YOURSELVES.

If I take this video for what it is, then I may have lost my perception of reality. I say this because I am a male of leisure, I don't go out into the world very often(originally). The entertainment industry is currently being ruined by certain people and because of this, reality seems less real but in turn, fantasy seems more real and less fantastic because the politics and censorship found within are taking elements from reality and adding them to where they do NOT belong. Reality is breaking down because I cannot perceive it to be otherwise or as I see it, Reality IS broken because certain people have blurred the line between Fantasy and Reality and I in turn and feeling very sad and have felt so for some years now. Going to a yearly anime contention is one of the few things that helped me to completely forget about my troubles. Its only for a weekend once a year but its the happiest time for me. My perception of the world is ruined because I firmly believe that EVERYONE is capable of doing all the things I mentioned but by in large, it is the fault of the people that are ruining the entertainment industry and certain other individuals that my perception of the world is DESTROYED. I just wanna enjoy what I love, is that REALLY so much to ask???]:S

It’s a placeholder as he said. The dump truck is the same as the dog that you’ve imagined first. Both are considered “gap”. It just says that there’s so much more (like the dump truck) than we could only imagine (the dog we imagined). It shows what real empathy should be like.

Reality is, and therefore we are in constant access to it, since we are in every way a part of reality, but we never have full access to it at once, or in its entirety. If I’m incorrect, then I please let me know and provide explanation.

I like what you're saying and I mostly completely agree with you, although I don't believe we have constant access to all of reality. We definitely have constant access to the human perception of reality, unless you lack any of the senses in which we use to comprehend the world around us. I believe there is one true reality and every organism has a different level of perception of that reality. For example, humans can only see roughly 1% of the electromagnetic spectrum, which means we can't perceive 99% of visible reality. It seems like this is kind of what you were explaining, so my apologies if I misinterpreted what you meant.

@David Morgan Yes, sort of. "Hot" and "cold" are relative concepts. There is no specific point where "hot" becomes "hot" outside of our own built-in system of perceiving, and even systems created to mathematically define degrees are based on our own understanding of our world. You could argue that 1,000°F is hot, as it would kill a person, but there are materials that could easily withstand a temperature like this and not take damage. But this is just how I see it.

If reality is only in your head, the conversation about it is one-sided and useless, a mental masturbation. It is a useless model on which to base anything. It is like the “brain in a vat” discussion. You would either claim that I am a product of your imagination or vice-versa. I don’t get this. Guessing a kind of dog is nothing to do with perception. It is to do with incomplete information and as he says filling in a gap. But I would not call that perception. Perception is based on your subjective experience of reality. It is not the way you imagine a story someone tells you. It is more specific and concrete than that. The difference he is describing is imaginative. How we process partial information where we have to fill in gaps. Yes, we fill in gaps from our experience too. But I would offer that the difference there is that we go from objective to subjective. In other words the perception has to do with our emotional reaction to an objective event based on it’s fitting to our pre existent understanding.

Well if the thoughts in your head about a particular situation whether positive or negative (your perception) create an image which create an emotion then that is how you view something (ie; your perspective). The storyteller is the “voice in your head”. And the voice has a story and a narrative about a particular thing

Oh man! If we saw anything as it was how it would be absurd..you mean when you see your wife as she is since it is absurd to you..would you modify her face in your mind like any Hollywood beauty. We would call it love earlier now it has different names and tags...I say accept anything as it is is love..I love myself would you
