As a Spaniard myself, I love Mexico and most people here do as well. For me your food is number one on the list (My country's cuisine aside). The only thing we don't like about your country is that you guys suffer a lot from crime and violence. That makes us really sad, because Mexico has the potential to be a very strong and successful country. Un saludo a mis hermanos mexicanos!

Well I think anyone would be mad when you are mistaken for something you are not. Spain is the mother land of anything Spanish ... so why would People be ignorant enough to think Mexico is the motherland of Spanish. It is simply false and downright stupid. Spanish come from Spain like English come from England. I see why so many people flunk school… this is a small example of how behind this nation is when it comes to basic education. Spanish, Italians, Portuguese, French and Romanian are all in the sane LATIN family. Latin began in Italy. Italians are the original Latins. Yes, some of the people in this family can have North African Berber ancestry and other middle eastern genes, but they are still regarded as white people because Arabs are also classified as white. It has a lot to due with Ribonucleic acid/ haplagroups/ and genetic markers. They are not white like Nordic Europeans, but loosely classified as white.

@@PsychicMedium4747 It's the home of the language but not necessarily the people. Spain forced it's language and culture on us the same way England forced their language and culture on the Natives to the north. That doesn't mean that Spain and England are our motherlands lol. That's simply false and downright stupid to believe so. I understand not wanting to be put in a box. Just because you speak the same language as someone else doesn't mean you look, think and feel the same way. But most Spaniards who get upset like this they just don't want to be associated with brown people. They don't like us and they can see ice raids coming as well. So they go out of their way to "flaunt their whiteness" in an attempt to separate themselves and avoid being lumped in. But then they want to take part in certain aspects of the culture still. Portuguese people do the same thing.

@@ramonw9430 but Spaniards and Portuguese are white people. Latinos are like me mixed race. It is no different than people who speak English. Yes, Spaniards and Portuguese don’t want to be mistaken for Latinos because they don’t want to lose their white privileges. Italians are the same way... they are latin as well and many times distant themselves from Latinos because they don’t want to be lumped in. However, the irony of all the this is many Italians, Spaniards, and Portuguese are mixed with middle eastern and North African so they are mixed as well. @@PsychicMedium4747 Yeah man I know Latinos are mixed. I'm Mexican. And yeah, I know Spaniards and Portuguese don't want to lose their white privilege's. But they kind of do to a certain extent. Especially Spaniards. That's why I find it funny and ironic that they have to pander to us (especially to California and Texas Mexicans) in order to get along in the states. In any case, all three are barely considered white by other whites and are constantly in jeopardy of losing their "white" status.

This isn't just in Spain this is all around the world the lighter you are and more European features you have you are treated better. The darker and more indigenous you are your considered poor and looked down on and less attractive. In Mexico calling someone in "indio" aka Indian as an native is an insult pretty much calling them lesser than. I'm a darker skin mexican with indigenous features. I know this.

It's also true among Asians and I recently learned its also true even among some Africans. To many Aisan culture, lighter skin meant you were higher class and hence more attractive, vs a peasant toiling under the sun. It's one reason why you see many Asian women carrying sun umbrellas. I work with an Ethiopian woman who also made comments about darker Africans. I was absolutely floored... had no clue such attitudes were even possible. So this whole skin color thing seems to be a global mindset... I am sure there are exceptions.

I felt that the Spaniards treated us very well. I never felt looked down on or discriminated in any way. We made some friends there and they are interested in the Mexican culture and food. Interesting enough I have felt that lighter skin Mexicans are actually worse as far as looking down and discriminating other Mexicans with darker skin and hair features. Also my father in law is really dark skin and has more native features, he for the most part really dislikes the Spaniards, so I guess it goes both ways.

I dont get it, I am a upper class latino. And while sure there are more than average representation of white people in the upper class latin society. Rich latinos are still for the most part non white/mestizo ... I am myself a pretty dark latino, I could perhaps even be considered afro latino, and while I've been subject to discrimination due to my race, this has been only tied to beauty standards. Nobody has assumed I'm poor or uneducated due to the way I look like and as far as I'm concerned is not really a stereotype in latin society. In fact, unlike north america where racial stereotypes often come with personality traits associated with certain races (nerdy asians, thuggish blacks, racist whites) ... in lating america racial stereotypes only are associated with physical traits ( blacks have "bad hair", short indians, white people look pale) I got a lot of flake over my "pelo malo" (bad hair) but other than that, I did not have a lot of negative reaction... I need to mention that my darker skin tone was usually praised, as i live in the coast near the beach and tanning is very very popular in my region. People here do like dark skin tones, so colorism is not that bad, but I'll call it "featurism" as people have a very negative reaction to flat noses, big lips, kinky hair and other traits associated with Africans

He didn't give me a follow-up story why he came to that conclusion, but he was definite in his answer. My mother is mexican, native american, and white. She is very light complexion with very kinky curly hair. My brother and I also came out two very different complexions. He's darker like my father and I'm right in the middle. Fair skin but can tan easily. Both of our parents speak both languages and my brother and I only speak English. Both my parents grew up facing racism because of their appearance and my brother and I have also been treated differently because of our appearances. Then the whole thing of not being real Latino because we don't speak Spanish. Even when I grew up and had children one is slightly more tan. Their father is very light complexion, but has a very latin name and always passes for a white guy. He himself speaks both languages. It just never ends. People are always trying to figure out our ethnicities. I know it's crazy, but I really don't think it should matter because really in the end it's all so insignificant. I am fairly certain based on what my Dad has told me and photos that his Father had mostly Native American/Mexican indigenous and very little or perhaps no European ancestry. My parents took me to Europe many times as a child. Once when we were in England (back in the 1980's) we ate at a really nice restaurant. Our waiter happened to be a Spaniard. My Dad was excited and started speaking to him in Spanish. Everything was ok at first. Then the food came out. My mother complained that her steak was undercooked. So this waiter actually cuts a bite off and tastes it. He says no it's fine. Nothing wrong with the food and refused to take it back. My Dad was like: see I knew it. Spaniards are arrogant. I have been to Spain and I don't recall us experiencing anything bad or mistreatment of my Dad. However my Dad still still is of the opinion Spaniards are kind of arrogant. He feels the same way about Argentinians who tend to be very European compared to other Latin Americans. I personally believe there are nice people and conceited people everywhere you go. Even in Mexico. I have met some arrogant people in Mexico who looked down their nose at me because my Spanish isn't so good.

By old laws/rules, you'd be considered mixed and not you wouldn't have rights nor could you own land in those times... However, this has slowly gone away and with younger people it's less of an issue. I watch KZread vids of Mexicans (fluent in English) living/working in Spain teaching English and are treated just fine and loving Europe.

To be honest, I think that in the United States is the only country in the West that cannot see Mexicans as part of the West Civilization. (Many people who think they know about stuff, they had a lot of trouble to consider Mexicans as Westeners) But Europeans do consider Mexicans as Westeners. In the United States, I am an outsider. In Europe, people may see me as "westener" Even in Quebec people may see me more related to them.... Maybe in places like in Germany (I have that experience) I will never be treaten as a German, but people may treat me as a Spaniard, an Italian, or an Portuguese. In Spain, they will treat Hispanic Americans (From Mexico to Argentina) as someone more related to them, compared to Americans or Germans. Or even French or English. They see Portugal and Italy as the most related to them. Then Latin America (Some countries better that others) Then other Europeans.

The same thing can be said to any latin american country or western country that was colonized and settled by Europeans. Also, just to add, Spain has historically been more tolerant of interracial unions when compared to Anglo socities in general that is why you have a good gene pool when it comes to Hispanics . If you were to put latinos in a group you will find caucassians, blacks, native americans, berber and asian all mixed together under one language, past, religion and culture.

The Spanish Empire adopted a Casta System to classify all of the Americas' various races and racial combinations, as well as where Spaniards were born. Similar to medieval Spain's concept of limpieza de sangre, or blood purity, the Casta System linked one's race with his or her behavior, personality, and social status. This may be an attribute to the current preconceived notion. In my personal experience, people I've encountered from the Netherlands, Spain, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Czech Republic, France, Germany and Belgium have all opened up and significantly changed their demeanor from cold/dry to welcoming and friendly after I reveal to them that I'm Mexican.

The cast system is worldwide. It permeates human history. It is a two-tiered system that is based on class (how much money your family has and how much influence) and racism (skin color/ethnic background). Unfortunately, this is not just an American system. Of course, as you stated, if you are black or brown some people will assume you are poor or less than. But, as a general rule Europeans like Mexicans. They know were not moving to Europe in large numbers like some other ethnic groups who can sometimes resemble us. Euros also love Mexican corridos, punk, and metal so, like so often is the case, music is a great ambassador.

I’m Mexican American and I feel like it’s pretty obvious that I’m a Latino, but people are often uncertain as to what ethnicity I am. A lot of people think I’m Italian and some middle easterners ask if I’m also middle eastern. So I’m definitely not “white-looking” (the only white guy I think I could pass for is George Clooney, who is kind of dark for a “white guy”). I’ve been flat out discriminated against in Mexico by Mexicans for being American. This wasn’t subtle discrimination, it was flat out rude behavior. I was treated as a lesser human for being an American. And this happened to me on 3 different occasions. You might ask if I was behaving like an entitled American with a pompous attitude and I wasn’t. I tried my best to speak my fairly good Spanish (albeit with a different accent) and was cognizant that I was a guest in a foreign country. I’ve always been very proud of my Mexican heritage, so it was shocking that I was treated so rudely (just to clarify, not by all, just a few jerks). My experience with Mexicans with a strong Spanish lineage is that they can sometimes be insufferable, condescending, and even arrogant. Colorism is very rampant in Mexico and the more fair-skinned one is, the better they tend to be treated. I’m somewhere right in the middle. When I went to Spain, I was expecting to be treated like a second class citizen (like I was in Mexico). To my surprise, the Spaniards were not only friendlier and more genuinely engaging, they actually made me feel relaxed when I apologized for not speaking perfect Spanish. They were much friendlier than the Mexicans were. I felt like I was tolerated in Mexico but I felt accepted and invited in Spain. Which was not what I was expecting. If anything, I would have expected a warmer reception from Mexicans since I look like them. I definitely didn’t look like the majority of Spaniards I saw, but never did I feel even the slightest hint of being unwanted or a burden. I definitely have felt that in Mexico on more than a few occasions. I don’t know why Mexicans treat Mexican-Americans with such contempt, but it’s a bit disappointing to feel rejected by the country where you have legitimate ties to. Spain, on the other hand, is a place I would revisit in a heartbeat and I would even love to live there. I hope this helps. As an olive-skinned Mexican with darker features, I felt more embraced and accepted by Spaniards. Which was a bit surreal, but that was my honest experience.

Mexicans come in all shapes and colors. To be Mexican doesn't mean your skin will be dark. You can also be light or in between. You can also be Spanish and be olive skin or dark, too. Moreover, Mexicans haven't usually immigrated to Spain--it's been the other way around. Mexico, as well as, other Latin American countries took in millions of Spaniards during the last two centuries when Europe was in the middle of their horrific wars and suffered starvation and poverty. My paternal grandparents left Barcelona in the 1800s and found a new life in Chihuahua, Mexico. Mexico gave them what Spain could not give them--food, land, and an economic opportunity. And one thing for sure, if you are Spanish and want to make it in the world of entertainment--you move to Mexico City, as there is no other place in the Spanish-speaking world that can launch your career. The idea that Spaniards will look down on you if you are Mexican is not true.

Most people in general stay where they were born, maybe leave a little farther, but Spain is a very different country with many different people. Who left Spain to other countries, where Gallegos and Andeluzes, so in the Peru there are words the way Andaluzes pronounce, and in most countries, they think all Spaniards are Gallegos. Most Spanish people don't know much about anyone else, yet many today travel all over the world. Catalan has Greek blood, and many who are in barcelona are not even catalan but want to be Catalan. Jobs where bad, people would move to Barcelona or Bilbao. They dress very well, you can see it as a bad or good thing. I wouldn't want to go to a club and see someone with sneakers, but i like wearing sneakers, i might wonder, what the hell is wrong with them, but later will accept it. Basque are another people and the Castellanos are another people, people are mixed with middle Easterns, even if they dislike the idea. Traveling is a shock, you will find very different things everywhere you go. Spanish people in the Canary Islands are very different also, they tend to be more like Cubans, they speak very similar and many moved to Cuba. Most people who think of Spaniards, think white people. They are mixed and some can look like arabs, and some look like mexicans. There are many other people living in Spain too. Spain is a rich country in some ways, but not in other ways. You can find people begging for money or food. There are Gypsies, there are many Romanians. Spaniards have two homes, one in the city and one for vacation, some people still live in farms. It's very hot in June, July and August, but more in the south, it can be over 100 degrees everyday. They also party alot. drinking and smoking is very common. Crime is low, many people would like to live in Spain, it's a wonderful country but the salary is very low. You could barely make it, and they will not welcome you to a job, it's very hard to find.

Especially with the new far-right nationalist political party's growth in support. So to answer your question: It's much better than it used to be, people don't generally mind where you're from, what you look like, or how you speak, but Spain's dictatorial past (Who was generally Nazi-sympathizing government during WW2) has left a cultural scar that's still not completely faded away.

Only very old people that came from isolated places tends to feel uncomfortable around different races. But racist crimes aren't common, they only avoid contact (they don't attack or insult). I never saw someone comparing POC with animals. Although a lot of people are against illegal immigrants, that's more xenophobia than racism. But again, I'm from the north and we are very welcoming here, because we received visitors from all over the world for centuries and we traveled around the world to get jobs during the XX century (specially to Mexico and Argentina). Not welcoming them when their countries gave us food and care would be hypocritical.

I do not think it has to do with what skin color people has. In Spain discrimination has more to see with social and education level than what people look like. In Europe, « racism » is more a cultural and educational concept. The populations that have a bad image is mostly due to the fact that, because of lower socio-cultural level, some problems do concentrate in certain populations or certain districts populated by certain populations (drugs, violence, gangs, communautarism...). These pheneomenons can give bad image to some groups but it has nothing to do with being « darker ». If someone from latin America emigrates to Spain, he is usually from the lower educated social classes, doing it for economic reasons. That is because the lack of education that this person might have a lower job, not because of skin color or indigenous American phenotypes. Spain ha a lot of Romanian emigrants, because Romania is a quite poor European country. The Romanian that emigrate in Spain because they are from the lower social and educational classes will have the lower jobs that Spanish people do not want to do, even if they look usually more or less similar or even bit lighter than most Spanish people. Bit there are also latin American emigrants, or Romanian ones that have a higher education, and they will have better jobs and better image. Skin color has nothing to do with that.

@Gavin Lim We literally have little or zero connection to the gypsies. Other than the fact that they have jewish behaivour, but overall dumber. "Look like them" Even if some of us do look like them, we are not them, That is like comparing dominicans with the haitians they may have similar features to the haitians, but overall don't look like them and in terms of behaivour and patterns both of these groups are nothing alike. Unless you are going to consider jewish khazars european because they look european, even though they don't describe them selves as such.

Gavin Lim no, I mean people from the country of Romania. Some of them can be gypsies, but most of those who emigrates to Spain are just « standard europeans ».. who just come from from lot poorer European country.

Though this may be the case with Mexicans regarding such large amounts of Native dna this is NOT the case with Puerto Ricans and Cubans as well as Argentinians etc. Who are in fact genetically EUROPEAN especially Spain.... I am 64% European 28% coming from Spain... 12% Native and 24% African and both my parents are 100% Puerto Rican.... Therefore I barely have Native blood and am in fact MORE European/Spaniard...

Spanish people are not like to a mixture of culture. There are not many "not spanishs" in Spain apart from Arabs. As what I saw, they do not have any consideration for Southern American. Spanishs can be racists (not all) because they are not used to see people of other ethnicities. Just look at the Spanish national team, there is a player named "Rafinha" that played, spanish people did not accept him to play. When he played on matches, they shouted at him, throw garbage on him. So they take them for 2nd Rate Citizens.

Every Spaniard I have ever met was polite and respectful towards me and I am Mexican. There is bigotries in every country. I am sure that some Spaniards look down on us, but we don't care the opinions of those people are not important. Mexican is an ethnicity and a Nationality. I am an ethic Mexican, but my nationality is American.
