I am from Brazil. Unfortunately it's not just the Brits, foreigners in general when talking about Latin America remember violence, drugs and corrupt politicians...😢😢😢 Obviously we are much more than that. We are from one of the most beautiful parts of the world. Our natural landscapes are stunning. Latin America's biodiversity is off the charts. We are the result of the mixture of different people, which gives us a unique cultural richness and diversity. Our food is delicious. There is no country in Latin America that has bad food. Our cinema is vibrant. We have great music and many of the most creative writers and artists are from Latin America.

Some of us, like me, have lived 100 years in the US, but I lived 9 years in Ecuador. My father is Cuban. I speak four languages. I am married to a German. Cubans built Miami. The funny thing is the term LATIN AMERICA was coined by a French guy. It was the French economist Michel Chevalier who first used the term “Latin America” in the 1850s while traveling the Americas as a way to distinguish what he felt were “Latin” peoples from the “Anglo-Saxon” peoples. This idea helped legitimize French colonial activities in Latin America.

  • @cube6485

There really isn't a strong amount of evidence of that. There's a lot of debate as to the origin of that word. Including words like "Ladino" and was used during the Spanish empire. That existed way before any french colonization. Regardless, the term is based on actual logic. Lets keep it real, the majority of Latin America is mixed with people of southern europe, so it's not like there isn't actual truth to that. Please stop propagating that this comes as the French as a fact when it's only one of the possibilities(which is pretty unlikely).

Hey Arnaud, I posted this as a reply, but I want you to see this comment so that pdcdesign's comment doesn't mislead you. There's a lot of debate as to the origin of that word Latino. Including words like "Ladino" and was used during the Spanish empire. That word existed way before any efforts of French colonization in Latin America, and highly probably the actual origin of the word. Regardless, the term Latin America is based on actual logic. Let's keep it real, the majority of Latin America are southern Europeans (Latin people) mixed with indigenous (Americans) people, so it's not like there isn't actual truth to that. It's possible that France tried to appeal to the term to gain favor and contributed to some degree to popularizing, but I think the impact overall would have still been very little. The word "Ladino" was used similarly to the word "Mestizo" which I think contributed to the fast acceptance as the acknowledgement of being mixed race is something that is omnipresent in Latin America.

Ah those from Venezuela. I have never understood your need to say "oh my parents are from Venezuela but my grandparents are from Germany" and in many cases it is not even true. Why aren't Venezuelans proud of their race? In all of Latin America (except Argentina, who believe they are Europeans, literally) there is the concept that if your father is Venezuelan and your mother is Peruvian, but you were born and raised in Venezuela, you are Venezuelan, period. But Venezuelans never seem to be able to be proud of their origins. You always want to bring up a relative from outside the American continent and many times that is not even true.
