Actually a big SHOUT OUT to you. You are one of the few reactors who not only admitted that you had a problem in the beginning with the change, but you my friend is the only one that has let himself grow (however slowly) into acceptance. But not only acceptance, also appreciation. For that, thank you. And your breakdowns are so informative. Can not wait to see even more. Great job

I started really listening to PTX during the months between Avi’s departure and Matt’s debut. I had to have a talk with myself, and it went like this: “You know these people are perfectionists. And given their perfectionist tendencies and having been used to Avi, they’re not going to choose a second-rate singer to join them. There will be differences, but I believe they will make a good choice.”

That was my logic too. A misstep with an unsuitable addition would have been an uncharacteristic misstep in a group that has had none so far. Thanks for sharing your thought. Made me think.

Yes, and I've heard that Avi helped them find Matt, so that may have helped too. :-) Matt does a fantastic job in this song, and the others I've heard from this EP so far as well. There were some earlier lives I saw when he first joined and I really was Not crazy about them as a group with Matt in it, but if they can do these EP songs this well Live, maybe I will be a born again PTX fan.

Deb Houck's Crafty Cottage Your not the first person I’ve ever heard feel like this.. but I urge you to really listen to the change in their style since he joined. (Sound of Silence will tell you all you need to know) I admit, I was an Avi fan hands down. I HATED the fact that he left. I was gonna hate his replacement. And then I heard him. Matt....is hard to explain. Avi was a powerhouse, and I had grown accustomed to his sound, but Matt is a wild card. His technical skill is incredible. His range may be better than even Scott’s. PTX is a perfectionist group. With Avi, I like to think that they were polished, and perfect. And although their sound is still perfect, there is a certain raw-ness I didn’t feel before. Like the addition of Matt gave them an edge, or a soul. I’ve loved their music and covers forever. But I feel like the music hits me harder now. I hear ranges from Scott, and Kevin I didn’t hear before. They have broadened their horizons as a group. I’ll love Avi forever, he has been and always will be a once in a generation talent. This current version PTX though, I’ve never known better.

I've been looking forward to your reaction to this one. To get the feedback of someone knowledgeable with a solid music background. This song is so different from what we're used to from Pentatonix, it doesn't matter the style or genre, they nail it! You mentioned their perfectly synchronized stops... that's something that another reactor (Tara Simon) also pointed out on one of their songs, noting that when there's an ending "s", they're so perfectly synchronized that it sounds like one person singing that final "s" sound rather than multiple "ssss" hissing. Their precision is one of the things that makes them so special.

I totally get what you mean regarding Avi/Matt - for me although I love and respect how talented all of the members are, current and initial- Avi for me was the bass version of Mitch. Their voices to me were both stunningly melodic/naturally tuneful (it's difficult to explain as the others are all so stupidly talented) It's like they were born to sing with these inbuilt mini inflections, not like full on runs all the time, but just dance lightly around the melody line/their part on certain notes. I do love Matt - he has more of a traditionally 'straight' bassline sound to me if that makes sense ? He is still a huge addition to PTX and from what I've seen is a total fit personality wise also.

Awesome song, mesmerizing performance, perfect attacks and cut-offs, great use of silence, terrific rasp from Scott, accuracy on high notes from Mitch, power and intensity from Kirstin, 5th-voice fullness from Kevin. But the story here is Mr. Matt Sallee. I loved this video and I love your thoughtful reactions. You're ALWAYS worth listening to.

Don't worry about attempting to get used to Matt...MANY Pentaholics had a hard time. Some were bitter about him leaving and the bar was set very high! Anyone that was to take his place was going to have to be amazing and Matt is. I still think some don't give him enough credit but he is a wonderful vocalist. And I love that Kirstie gained much more confidence in herself after her broadway stint. I love all of them!

No matter the genre of the original song PTX always nails it to make a cover just as good (and often better)... and to think about it that they arranged and recorded it although separated in their own homes. Scott told in an interview that he had to cover his head sometimes to block out the surrounding noises in the house (puppy, boyfriend, ...) But most importantly Scott said in an interview that it’s just an appetizer for what they’ve got coming up next: Their first album of all-original songs since 2015!!!! “We’ve written so many songs and we’ve worked so hard on it and we’re like on our final mixes. And I think we’re really pushing the boundaries with what Pentatonix is capable of,” Scott tells ABC Audio. “And the songs are just so moving and like, amazing. We’re so proud of them. [...] This is like the interim EP to keep fans happy and to give people content,” he adds. “But the big original album is coming.”

I feel the same way about you when it comes to Matt.. he won me over with the Grinch. I watched the original performances when the sing off was on the air 10 years ago, though. It was really hard to let Avi go, but I appreciate good new thing, too.. have you seen his group's cover of "Hey Ya!"?!? He's got a great profile that shows in his artistry. I'm glad he got a chance to showcase that in his own terms 👍

I know what you mean about Matt and Avi. I was a HUGE fan of Avi, and was worried about Pentatonix's future after he left. But I think they played it smart with Matt; they didn't try to get someone who was 'just like Avi.' If you haven't seen/reacted to 'You're A Mean One, Mr Grinch' yet, I can highly recommend that as the song that cements Matt's role in the group. He sings the lead in that one, and he utterly OWNS it. As wonderful and talented as Avi was and is, I don't believe he could have brought what Matt brought to that cover - and indeed, what he brings to the group. It's different to what Avi brought, but it's no less perfect for it.

Matt is not Avi; he's totally Matt. It took me quite a while to wrap my head around that. What changed my mind was that every time I saw/heard him I'm thinking "Damn, the boy can SING!" He adds layers to the package that Avi couldn't, just as Avi added stuff that Matt couldn't. With the maturing of the lower registers of the other singers he adds such rich textures. I can't say enough nice things so I'll shut up now.

Welcome back DramaSyde. Nice seeing you again. It’s been a while. I always enjoy your appreciation of the music and your thoughtful comments. Thanks for that well deserved shoutout to Matt! In my case, when Avi left I was already so heavily invested in PTX as a group that, heartbroken as I was, as long as PTX continued, my continued loyalty was never in doubt. The thing with PTX (for me) is that I’ve listened to the greatest singers (Whitney, Maria Carey, you name them) but I had never experienced what I did when the 5 voices came together. That’s what changed me immediately from a fan to a disciple. My logic was also that if Scott and the other guys have found someone they wanted to add, them he had to be something special otherwise he would have been an uncharacteristic misstep in a history which has none so far. I was not disappointed. Thanks for the reaction. Have you ever watched some of Kevin’s solo work under his KO label? He’s amazing and his KOvers of “Down” and “Sign of the times” would be a great start.

I found your channel through PTX reactions and you are quickly becoming my favorite reactor because of the experience & knowledge you bring to the table. It's refreshing hearing a musician & producer's thoughts especially through the Sing-Off reactions because you were saying the same stuff the judges were. Can't wait for more. You reacted to Tori Kelly previously and requested some recommendations.. Hollow Live at Billboard Women In Music really shows her skills and while it's not technically a Christian song it definitely would work as one. She also has a gospel style song with Kirk Franklin that is quite good. Or her version of Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing (also does a few collabs with Superfruit). I'm blabbing on but I think she's great. Would love to see more of your thoughts on her.
