Thanks for doing my request. They do an amazing cover of Amazing Grace. Mitch is the singer you were asking about. His high notes are awesome. Scott is the guy signing the Italian part, Kirstin is the lady, Matt is the guy on the right in the video and Kevin is the Beat Boxer. Almost all of their songs are acapella. God Bless you guys!

Mitch Grassi the lead singer in this one he is a Counter Tenor . Scott Hoying the one who sang in Italian is the Baritone. Kirsten Maldonado of course the woman and Mezzo Soprano. These 3 grew up together in Arlington Texas. Kevin Olusola the beat boxer extraordinaire got his Pre-Med degree at Yale before joining the group, he is also a Classically trained Cellist. And Matt Sallee the Bass he joined the group in 2017 after the original Bass Avi Kaplin left the group. They won the show the Sing Off back in 2010 or 2011. So you have a 12 year catalog to go through they are absolutely amamzing.

Your tears are an expression of the pure beauty you felt in your soul. You should listen to their cover of Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone). Another heavenly experience. Keep it up you two. You are encouraging to this older generation that maybe our youth isn't completely hopeless. Pentaholics (their fans) will say you just received your first "Mitch slap". Mitch, counter tenor, Scott (baritone) Matt (bass) Kevin (tenor, beat boxer, cello) and Kirsty (soprano)

Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair),(not in this video) true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZread, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZread videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZread), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZread, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. It is an often debated subject among the Pentaholics as to just how soon we introduce the "Beginners Guide" as we don't want to overdo the introduction. This is a compilation of snips of a whole load of songs which PTX have released. It highlights each member with some of their solos and then a brief history in video. It is quite long - 14+ minutes and is a little dated now (Feb 2020) but is a good watch kzread.info/dash/bejne/nnisq8iwlqbTgag.html&pp=ygUdYmVnaW5uZXJzIGd1aWRlIHRvIHBlbnRhdG9uaXg%3D. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

Maybe give a listen to their cover of Mary Did You Know which features their original bass, Avi Kaplan. With Christmas coming in fast you should definitely consider homing in on their versions of all the old classics done in a way that will rock your world. Carol of the Bells is an older one with their original bass and they were all very young but still wonderful. Only one member change in their 12 years but a lot of physical changes. Great 1st reaction 😊 They do a wide variety of music...check out their 90s Dance Medley, Blinding Lights, and Evolution of Rhianna and/or Michael Jackson to see a different side of them. They do both covers and originals plus a TON of Xmas music. And the best part about their Xmas music is that they take these classic songs and bring them into the modern era...super fun and refreshing. When u get to December, start out with O Come All Ye Faithful, 12 Days of Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Carol of the Bells, and My Favorite Things (from Sound of Music)...there are many many more but thats a good place to start.

Loved your first reaction. Mitch Grassi is the one who held you in amazement. We "Pentaholics" (their fans) call that being "Mitch slapped". A few things to be aware of: There's only been ONE change in the group since 2011. In 2016 the original bass singer, Avi Kaplan (was not in this video) left & was replaced in 2017 by Matt Sallee (African American, wearing a white & pink suit in this video). Mitch & Kirsten Maldonado (only female) change their hair color, style, length, as well as fashion (especially Mitch) all the time. So, you will think there are many different band mambers. But there are not. I think you'll love their "Amazing Grace: My Chains Are Gone" official video. As far as Christmas songs go, my favorite is "Oh, Come All Ye Faithful". Already looking forward to your reactions to many more Pentatonix (aka "PTX") videos.

Best way to get to know these groups is through Wikipedia, their websites, and the NBC's The Sing Off competition. Peter Hollens and Adam Chance competed as part of groups in season 2; Pentatonix competed in season 3; and Home Free and Voiceplay competed in season 4. Between Pentatonix, Home Free, Voiceplay, Voctave, and Peter Hollens there are over 900 covers and originals that they have done. To meet just some of the amazing singers that are masters at this craft try Voiceplay's 'Just Sing''. Voctave did a cover of 'Mary 'Did You Know' with Mike Lowry (the author of the song.) Peter Hollens has done about half a dozen songs with Tim Foust (the Bass for Home Free.) He also did a cover of "Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair" with Avi Kaplan (original bass singer with Pentatonix.)

Sorry this is so long. One thing to remember is that 3 members have a 5 octave range, I don't know about Kevin, because he doesn't sing that much (I do prefer his normal tenor voice to his falsetto, but what do I know), that leaves Mitch, our boy Mitch has at least a 6.5 octave, and probably more, but he refuses to let others know his true top or bottom note. Part of that is he's afraid he'll hurt his voice, which I can understand. There has only been one personal change that was in 2017, Avi Kaplan the bass singer left for various reasons, and Matt Salee came on board. The face most people make when they hear Mitch's voice is called a Mitch Slap. I'm sure others have went into this, but only God could bring this group together. The trio (three main singers) met in community theater when they were like 8 and 9, then by accident all moved on to thet same street, just houses from each other. Sang together in high school choir, then 2 went off to college, as the other finished up high school. Scott met a guy that worked at the college, and also worked on a TV show called The Sing Off, kind of like The Voice but only for A ccepella groups. They applied, found out they had to have 5 members, a friend introduced them to a supberb bass they knew, with time running short and out of desperation they hit youtube and searched for beatboxer, the first video was this guy with a strange last name doing something called cello-boxing. Basically he plays cello and beatboxes at the same time. The got a hold of him as asked if he wanted to fly across country and be on a talent show with 4 strangers, he said he would but he was kind of busy finishing up pre-med at Yale. A few weeks later he called them back and said he graduated with like a 4.0, and sure he would be glad to join them. He arrived just in time to practice the first song maybe once or twice, but when they took the stage the first time you would think all 5 of them had been together for years. That was 2011 in 2016 the bass left on good terms due to a variety of reasons. With his replacement starting the beginning of 2017. There is another God delivery specials. See the new bass who is now the youngest member, had no idea who he was auditioning for (blind audition) and had moved up the ranks of the people also auditioning, until one day he walked in a room and there sat PTX, and he told them he knew every one of their songs by heart, as he had been a fan since they did a mini-concert at his high school. When he could accurately sing any bass part of any song threw at him, along with his God given talent, he got the job.

Mitch Grassi - first singer (countertenor), Scott Hoying - second singer (baritone with like a five-octave range from bass to high tenor), Kirstie Maldonado - female singer (range from alto to soprano), Matt Salleen- bass (white jacket in Sound of Silence), Kevin Olusola beatboxer and lyrical tenor. Avi Kaplan was the bass until 2017.

The three in the middle grew up together. The group was formed to compete in the sing off in 2008, which they won. Only one, Avi Kaplan has been replaced. They do all manner of music. Multiple Grammy's, platinum albums and a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. Welcome to the rabbit hole.

This ti the best acapella band in the world. Mitch is a natural counter-tenor which means he can sing a high as a soprano. Scott is the gentleman who sang in Italian He is a lyric baritone which means he can sing tenor to medium bass. Mitch's range is yet to be determined but believe to me to six octaves, The young lady Kirstin isa mezzo soprano who sings from alto to soprano . Matt is a wonderful bass who joined them when Avi Kaplan their first bass left due burn-out, He now has a solo career. Their beat boxer Kevin is amazing, He is a yale pre-med graduate who is classcially trained on the cello and alto sax. He sometime plays the cello in their videos and beat-boxes at the same time They are three -time grammy winners an dhave a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame. The wonderful thing about this group is all of them remain down to earth and humble even after all their success. They have been performing since 2011.

That look on your faces is what we Pentaholics (that's what we call ourselves) call being Mitch-slapped. Mitch Grassi is the young man that your faces were reacting to. That happens to everybody the first time they watch Pentatonix. I have been listening to them since SingOff 2011. I still get an occasional Mitch-slap when he does things that should be impossible for the human voice to manage.

There are two other versions of this song you might like also. Lucy Thomas (16) and her sister (12) is one. And, the other is Marcelito Pomoy who does both high (Celine Dion) and low (Andrea Bocelli) by himself; amazing.

The singers: The two soloists in this are Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), natural contratenor, and Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Mitch has a range of just over six octaves and is considered by all the other members of Pentatonix to be the best singer in the band. He's known for his ethereal high vocals, and switches seamlessly between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice. Shawn Stockman, of Boyz II Men, has said that Mitch has "one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life." And we refer to that surprised look people get when they first hear Mitch sing as "being Mitch slapped." You've been Mitch slapped. Don't let it worry you; it's happened to all of us, generally more than once because Mitch is full of surprises. When describing a man's vocal range, the term "lyric" means that the actual range is greater than the nominal range. Scott's range starts in the middle of the bass range, on the low end, and extends through a normal tenor range on the high end. When the bass is soloing, Scott can and does take over the bass harmony line. According to everyone in Pentatonix, INCLUDING Scott, Scott is the member who is most likely to forget the lyrics, so of COURSE it turned out that his voice was most suited to sing Andrea Bocelli's part in "The Prayer." And no, he doesn't speak Italian; he had to learn this by rote, and he worked very hard to get the pronunciation right. The beatboxer is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable). Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper. Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on saxophone and once on cello. He graduated from Yale in 2011 with a pre-med major, and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional beatboxer instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place. Note that in this song Kevin is also providing some of the high harmonies. Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado is the only woman in Pentatonix. Kirstie sings anywhere from low alto through coloratura soprano, the highest soprano range, and she has fantastic whistle notes on top of that. Recently Pentatonix has begun calling her an "alto soprano." Pentatonix has had two bass singers. Their first one was Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo (his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances), but his range extends to about the middle of a normal tenor range. Avi left Pentatonix in 2017, for a variety of personal reasons. He has since gone on to have a very successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his KZread channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic However, "The Prayer" is a more recent release, so in this video we have Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), who joined Pentatonix in late 2017 or early 2018, depending on how you figure it. Matt is another lyric bass. In addition to being the newest member of Pentatonix, Matt is also the youngest member, and I'm told that bass voices improve with age. So it's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it's still growing. To find his current range I recommend listening to a recent live stream of "Hallelujah." You can find one here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eKWkysqJkdPRn8Y.htmlsi=tC6Ew07JGeQKQvDL Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, and it will blow you away. I don't believe he's at the basso profundo level yet, though I expect him to reach it within a year or two. But on the high end he's near the top of a normal tenor range. In this video, when the camera shows all five of them, from left to right we see Kevin, Kirstie, Scott, Mitch, and Matt.

Yawl, need to check out their (behind the scenes), the making of “Evergreen”, “Evergreen” is one of their Christmas Albums, it was nominated for a Grammy. It would’ve been their 4th had they won, and most believe they should’ve won it…they’ve added 8 new songs (24-31) to their newly released “Greatest Christmas Hits” album, all are worth listening to-plus they have a fun “Nightmare Before Christmas” cover that’s well worth a watch around Halloween time. Their is also their original song “Thank You” written by Scott, where he plays the piano (first time) and Kevin (KO) plays his cello w/Mitch, Kirstie and Matt all blending to making it super moving, it’s a Thanksgiving/but more Christmas kinda feel to it-well worth a listen too! So many great tunes and so little time! On their “Christmas around the world” album, yawl should definitely listen to “tracks” (4 African beat & Chior, 5 folk/Country feel,, 10 new age sung buy Mitch and 12 the harmonies will make your soul ascend, w/tears & goose bumps! ), those are a few of my most favorites, and there are “music videos” to watch for tracks (1, 6 and 11). You should check out their live Cracker-barrel performance of “Evergreen” from their (Evergreen) album…it’s a song written for their mothers. It’s such a beautiful tribute! Yawl should also check out/watch their live performance of “Joyful, Joyful” from their evergreen concert, it’s amazing! There are so many to list, but these are some definite songs to add to your list to listen to:-)
