Avi Kaplan left in 2017, amicably, and has a solo career. The bass that is there now is Matt Sallee, and fits in well….very energetic. The members are from left to right: Matt Sallee, bass /rhythm, Mitch Grassi, counter tenor, Scott Hoying, baritone but covers bass when Avi/Matt has melodic part, Kirstie Maldonado, mezzo soprano, and Kevin Olusola, percussion and plays cello at times. The Avi / Matt switch has been the only change in their 10 + yrs together

Nothing particularly sad. Avi left in 2017, finishing out months of tour with the group. He was burned out from the quick tempo and needed to step back for his mental health. He supported them and they supported him at the start of the break (it might have gotten a bit more frayed after the lawyers and terms but if there was any bad blood they have been very mature about it and kept it private). Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi are still great friends. Matt has been the bass since Avi left. First on a test run for their Christmas tour in 2017 and then an official member since 2018. He fits so well in the band and brought some well needed spark and energy to the group who had been grinding hard and long at that point.

Mitch (pink jacket) is a counter tenor with a 6 octave range. Scott (blonde hair) also has impressive range and takes over the bassline if the bass is singing a solo, and can reach the tenor range with ease.. Avi (long hair and beard) left the group in 2017 amicably and now has a solo career. Matt took over and is still with the group. That has been the only change in their line up in the 11 years they've been together. Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) is the lady, and Kevin is the beatboxer, who is also a tenor. Hope that helps!

As others have said, Avi was unable to continue with the frenetic pace they were maintaining and family illness. 2013 51 concerts and 10 Christmas concerts. 2014 67 concerts US and Asia and Christmas tour. 2015 90 concerts US, Europe and Asia. Not forgetting putting out an original album. 2016 70 concerts and Popspring in Japan. 2017. Only 22 and a Christmas tour plus Hollywood Bowl, Grammys. It's easy to see why a man whose mental and physical health depends on solitude and contact with nature would be unable to continue this pace.

It is definitely NOT a sad story. Avi needed to leave in 2017 for a number of personal reasons, including the touring schedule of PTX, which was giving him chronic jet lag, and his mother had a cancer scare that year, which meant he was flying back to the US between show dates, plus the overall pace of PTX was simply dragging him down. Avi needs the quiet and balance of nature to regenerate his physical and spiritual health, and there just wasn't time to make that happen. It was a difficult decision for everyone, but you absolutely need to listen to Avi now. He is a masterful songwriter who has chronicled the difficult journey to finding his real voice. Two excellent originals are "Change on the Rise" and "All is Well." My favourite version of the latter is his solo performance in a church in Utrecht, Netherlands. Breath. Taking.

As stated Avi left amicably. Mitch is a counter tenor and that is his natural voice, not falsetto. Matt is now the bass. Kirstie is a mezzo soprano and Scott is a baritone/bass/ tenor.

  • @TheInkdN3rd

Mitch & Kirstie can both go into the stratosphere. Mitch is a counter tenor so his voice while being male, has a higher thinner sound giving it that beautiful pitch. While Kirstie is the opposite. She is a mezzo soprano, so she has a feminine voice and can even go into whistle notes, but her low range is husky & warm & full which is unique for a higher singer. So they can interchange. Same with their current bass Matt & their baritone Scott. Both can go low and both can sing up in higher octaves so they can interchange. Also when they wanna add that KO sauce he is a tenor and sometimes sings the highest note in a song but you gotta pay attention lol!! We miss Avi but I truly feel both parties are at peace with the split as both have found such joy & success & amazing fans. Avi has had his solo work featured in a couple tv shows. I heard 2 songs on Resident Alien and immediately knew it was Avi!! Lol. Can't wait for PTX to get their star next year!!!!

They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America's Got Talent as non-competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass. Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhvmes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world-class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre-med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese. Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZread, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class vear ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC. While at USC, Scott joined a USC-based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi's performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZread videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello-Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re-arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five-piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZread), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn't think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZread, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them but when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super-viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony's top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best-selling genre), and have had multi-platinum album sales, sold-out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) was brought in as the new bass singer in early 2018. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have been nominated for a 4th Grammy. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have been nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. They have announced that they will have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame to be installed next year.

Mitch (pink jacket, mustache) is a counter tenor (highest vocal range for a male) and Kirstie (the lady) is a mezzo soprano. Their vocal ranges overlap quite a bit, so on some high notes it can be hard to tell which one is singing. They've also been singing together for so long now that they can make their voices sound like each other when they're singing together, so it just sound like one very powerful voice. PTX does a cover of Let It Go (from Frozen), where Mitch and Kirstie switch off on the lead, and it's kind of difficult to tell who is singing lead at what time - some of their switches come at somewhat unusual times in the song, which makes it even more difficult to tell!

This is the trouble with coming to a reactor late like this ... don't know how much the rest of the Pentaholics told you. The three primary vocalists, Scott (blond baritone), Kirstin (alto), and Mitch (countertenor) have sung together since middle school or so, in community theater and so on. They went to the same performing arts high school in Arlington, TX, and formed the nucleus of what would become Pentatonix: The Trio (you can find a couple of videos online here of them performing). When Scott went off to college, he was in an elite a capella group there, the SoCal Vocals, and met an upperclassman named Ben Bram, who was going to be working on the competition shot The Sing Off when he graduated. Scott wanted the Trio to appear on the show, but Ben explained that they would need at least five people. He put the Trio in touch with Avi Kaplan, and they found Kevin beatboxing while playing his cello - "celloboxing" - in a viral KZread video. They won The Sing Off, and the rest is history.

After mid-2017 Matt Sallee is the bass. Before that, it was Avi Kaplan. Aside from style, that's the only change. Avi had some family to take care of and couldn't do that while on tour. He also needed to put more effort into his personal music style, which you will see in his last 2 albums. His Change On The Rise is an amazing anthem for personal growth and motivation.

For starters, You can't miss with "Do you feel the love tonight" from the Lion King, and "Come along," for some solid Matt and Kirstie solos, great videos. Another one featuring Kirstie is "Seasons of Love" from Rent, but with the version recorded for the 2021 "A Capital Fourth" PBS special, performed on a roof at sunset with a backing choir. It's truly great, and no worries about the censor, you don't have to stop and start if you don't want. Then please, play their original songs from the album, The Lucky Ones, each one is a a delight! Yes Mitch (pink jacket) is a counter tenor (a high tenor) which means he can reach the same high notes as Kirstie who is a Mezzo soprano. Both Mitch and Kirstie can do whistle notes like Mariah Carey. Avi Kaplan was the bass and he left amicably in 2017 to be replaced by Matt Sallee, who you can see in this one. Avi's mum was very unwell and he couldn't deal with how full-on the PTX schedule was at the time. He also wanted to explore some solo stuff where he wasn't just doing a bass line and his solo stuff is amazing so we have all benefitted from him leaving, though it was sad at the time. Also Matt is different but just as good and much under-rated because everyone loved Avi! I loved Avi too but we wouldn't have had his solo music if he'd stayed with PTX and Matt has incredible range - you should hear him hit some really high notes at the end of Joyful Joyful from their live Evergreen Christmas tour last year!
