I have decided that my favorite thing that happened during the pandemic was that wild groups of PTX fans used this time to rove through all of KZread to find unsuspecting reactors and casually but repeatedly suggest PTX songs for them to react to, and then gathered with knowing nods and secret smiles, like a wise counsil of elders, to watch these new people be struck speechless as they discover this singular magic. It's the most pure and beautiful thing that I've seen on the interwebs in... well, ever, and it makes my whole heart smile.

Oh no... no no no. For me, it's even better! My favorite thing that happened during the Pandemic was that _I_ discovered Pentatonix myself! And then I got crazy watching dozens and dozens of reactors reacting to hundreds of videos. I'm obsessed.

The stunned look on your face! They won a Grammy for this. Story is it was filmed in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) kitchen. Major expense was the editing software. "Love Again" is trending again right now with reactors. It's---- hmmm---a little different.... Avi and Kevin wrote it.

You can't go wrong with Pentatonix, and they have a huge catalog of works to check out. Some of my favorites are "Gold," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Hallelujah," "The Prayer," and an original, "Love Again." Those are some of my favorites. The bass, Avi Kaplan, left the group in 2017. Matt has done a great job since. You'll see Matt on the newer songs. Avi has been putting out solo work, and you should check it out. I happen to particularly love "Change on the Rise" and "All is Well -- 7 Layers." Have fun!

Avi's solo work is FIRE!!! Totally different vibe and we can see why he needed to go his own way in order to be authentic to himself. "Change On the Rise" is an anthem, "Chains" speaks to my soul, and "I'm Only Getting Started" is a song I assign to my therapy clients as homework. "When I'm A Fool" raises the bar for relationship goals.

Anything they do is fantastic. I recommend their Evolution videos (Music, Beyonce, Rhianna, Michael Jackson, Arianna Grande). They are one take recordings live. The members are: Mitch Grassi (tenor), Scott Hoying (baritone), Kirstie Maldonado (alto), Kevin Olusula (beatboxing, cello-boxing (playing cello while beatboxing), tenor), and in this video Avi Kaplan (bass). Avi left the group in 2017 and replaced by Matt Sallee.

Super reaction. Avi (the basso profundo and pronounced Ah-Vee) and Kevin Olusola (the beat boxer) were roommates and great friends. This was filmed in Avi and Kevin's apartment, and this was Grammy win #1 of 3. Grammy win #2 was Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (no words...no problem for PTX) and #3 was a collaboration with Dolly Pardon of Jolene. They perform both overs and originals. Their video of Hallelujah has over 675 million views. I would love to watch you react to that one. They also perform it live and will blow your mind at kzread.info/dash/bejne/mpV6qtSfncmuksY.html More Pentatonix please!!!!

They are amazing live and there is a dressing room version of them singing this live. They won't do anything in the studio that they can't sing live. They won a grammy for this one. If you like EDM type music, watch their original 'Love again'. I'm sure you will be a Pentaholic soon! They can rap too. Try their cover of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Can't hold us. Kirstie, Mitch (high counter tenor) and Scott (blonde baritone) are all from Texas and have known each other sing they were 8 and have been singing together since high school. They entered and won an a cappella singing competition in 2011 called the Sing Off and they found Avi (the bass singer till 2017, then Matt Sallee) and Kevin (the beatboxer) for that competition as they needed to have five in the group. Their best known song is probably their cover of Hallelujah which has over 600 million views! It doesn't sound like that would be your thing though. They are also very well known for xmas songs and if you love live stuff try Gold or any of their Evolution videos (Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Beyonce, Ariana Grande)- they are done in one take and are all awesome. They do lots of different style covers and originals. I always recommend newbies to watch their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. Brian May has said it's the best cover he's heard of it. They waited five years till they were certain they could do it justice! Enjoy!

It might still happen. Sean, be prepared for this. Sony is vicious when it comes to Pentatonix reactions. Blurring and/or partially obscuring the video seems to be the most effective way to prevent the video from being taken down. Frequent pausing also helps a LOT, and we Pentaholics know the drill and won't be offended if you take that route in the future.

You really can't go wrong with any of their songs, whether they be covers (or as we Pentaholics call upgrades), their originals, evolutions and even their Christmas music. They are just as amazing live and they have so many to choose from. One of my favorites is their version of Gold by Kiiara. In her version they had to use looping and other equipment to get the same sound that Mitch does without any of it. This group is filled with nothing but pure raw talent and are amazing. I think you'd enjoy their 90s Dance Medley, released last year (with Matt on bass instead of Avi). Any of their 'Evolution of' medleys will appeal, too: their transitions and rhythm section are simply fantastic. For 'big' songs, their cover of Hallelujah has the most views. Also Bohemian Rhapsody, Sound Of Silence, Carol Of The Bells, Amazing Grace, Imagine, and The Prayer for covers of very well-known songs. In terms of original music, I'd recommend Love Again (great edm vibe), Sing, Can't Sleep Love, Run To You, and for more recent stuff, Happy Now, Anchor (no music video), Petals (no music video), and Be My Eyes. For a live performance, check out Popspring 2016 (with their old bass, Avi): 3 originals and their Evolution Of Michael Jackson.

Always here for Pentatonix. You really nailed many of the things that make the group so entertaining. With time you will find out what a wide range of training and talents they started with, like Kevin (beatboxer) being a concert-level cellist, and Avi (bass) being able to sing two notes at once. Add to that an unbridled creative drive, and you end up with PTX covers and originals that are gripping, and full of surprises. Upbeat stuff? An original they did on the heels of their Daft Punk medley is "Love Again." Slightly different vibe, more steam punk, but just as lively, with lots of percussion, and each member really gets a chance to show off their skills. Liked and subbed.

They one a Grammy for this. Video was done in Avi closet for $400. They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America's Got Talent as non-competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass. Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhvmes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world-class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre-med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese. Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZread, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class vear ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC. While at USC, Scott joined a USC-based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi's performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZread videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello-Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re-arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five-piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZread), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn't think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZread, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them but when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super-viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony's top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best-selling genre), and have had multi-platinum album sales, sold-out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) was brought in as the new bass singer in early 2018. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have been nominated for a 4th Grammy. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have been nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. They have announced that they will have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame to be installed next year.

Also they have a bunch of originals too. I recommend "sing" it's an original. I recommend "evolution of Michael Jackson" and "can't hold us" (covers) You'll notice these are all older but if you do any newer ones be aware that they only have had one member change in their 10+ years together. Avi (the base with the beard) left in 2017 and now we have Matt. Everyone else has stayed the same. Mitch (the higher voice guy) and Kirstie look different every single video pretty much so don't get thrown off.

@Sean Staxx: Those were ALL Daft Punk songs in a mash-up/medley. They can do classical, holiday music, covers of broadway and pops, and even the occasional country style. You noted that their Daft Punk video had 350 million hits. Look at Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" that they covered. But this video was their first Grammy.

Starting with their older stuff and original bass singer, Avi, I highly recommend Can't Hold Us, Problems, Bohemian Rhapsody, Say Something, Hallelujah (probably their most popular), and Christmas songs of Mary Did You Know, Little Drummer Boy, O Come All Ye Faithful Newer with Matt at bass: The Sound of Silence, Can You Feel The Love Tonight, 90s dance medley, My Favorite Things, New Rules x Are You That Somebody, Amazing Grace, The Prayer (my favorite).

    The black guy is Kevin Olusola, probably the best beatboxer on the planet. He also has a lovely voice, when he isn't too busy being the entire percussion section to sing. The guy with the beard is Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee) Kaplan. Avi is a lyric bass, which means that his range extends into the baritone, but don't let that fool you - Avi's lowest notes have been known to blow out speakers in live performances. If you really enjoy seeing Avi and Kevin together, check out _11th Performance - Pentatonix - "Since U Been Gone" and "Forget You" Remix - Sing Off - Series 3_ here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q6iDqbCAZrzKj5M.html When you get to about 2:50 in the video, start paying close attention to Kevin and Avi. {Note: _The Sing-Off_ was a television competition for a cappella groups. Pentatonix was formed with the specific intention of entering _The Sing-Off._ This was in 2011; the trio (Scott Hoying, the tall blonde guy; Mitch Grassi, with the high voice; and Kirsten [AKA Kirstie - rhymes with thirsty] Maldonado, the only woman in Pentatonix) were all just 19 years old.}

Welcome down the rabbit hole from a long-time Pentaholic. They do sound great live. Saw them in December 2021. They have songs of many genres, and there are many somgs you would like for their exciting tone, but I would not sleep on the Christmas songs. Maybe check out where they began with The Sing Off performances from 2012-2013 (season 3) just search them with the name of the show to see where it all began. Although they are the biggest stars from this show, I would also recommend checking out Home Free from season 4 and all their songs, Lastly, their individual projects are amazing too. You particularly may like Kevin "KO" Olusola's solo stuff. Start with his celloboxing videos esp. Down KOver. Enjoyed your insights. And again, welcome to the Pentaholics/Home fries family!

You're absolutely correct about the bass (Avi) and percussion (Kevin) being key parts of their music. One of the judges on the show where they first came to prominence (Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men) dubbed them "Meat and Potatoes", since those elements are such a huge factor in the music. That's still true today, even after "potatoes" (Avi, the bass) left with new bass Matt taking over. They haven't missed a beat (pun intended 😉).

@@SeanStaxxMusic they have 2 original albums. Pentatonix (2015, first original Acapella album to be no 1 at BB200) and The Lucky Ones (2021) + original songs on most of other albums. Most popular of later Run to You, Love Again, On my way home, Natural Disaster, Thank you, Evergreen, etc. Only often their originals do not get a video. Edit: maybe it is little too early, but most of them have solo/duo albums outside PTX, usually written by them. The most popular project is probably Superfruit (Mitch+ Scott). Their album Future Friends has all written by them (+ coauthors), have a video for every song and recently their song guy.exe got very popular on tik tok, years after release.

Pentatonix puts out a Christmas album every year, and you should definitely check them out. They turn the staid old standards, like _O Come All Ye Faithful,_ into jazzy celebrations, but their cover of _Mary Did You Know_ is very reverent and serious. And _The Twelve Days of Christmas_ is just *fun.* And descriptions don't *(can't)* do them justice - just listen to them.

They will change your mind about Christmas music; they did me; I've never like it; I thought it was boring. I know they have a couple that are a raggae style, that's my kind of Christmas music! They have so so many great songs; you could literally close your eyes & pick one, and you wouldn't be disappointed. They have originals as well that will give you another perspective on just how talented they are. The wonderful bass (Avi Kaplan) left the group, and went on his own. The 2 male singers (Scott & Mitch) had a KZread channel "Superfruit" which shows a different side personally and musically. The beat boxer (Kevin) is multi talented and has his own KZread channel. Kirsten I don't know as much about, but musically, she has the voice of an angel with a little sass lol. Her, Scott & Mitch grew up together, and it shows!

O Come All Ye Faithful was almost completely rewritten from a style perspective into the joyous song it should have been. I can't even hear the old version in my head anymore. Not to mention they sing two Christmas classics that don't even have words and they won a Grammy for one of them. Yes, a band without instruments sung a song without words and won a Grammy.
