FYI - Mitch on the high note. He's a counter-tenor and can reach the same high notes as certain sopranos can. That's where the comment "Mitch slap" comes from. He hits those notes and reviewers go WHAT???

In addition to the salute to Dr. May with the shooting stars, did you notice there are four stars? Queen had 4 band members. Each star is a tribute to a band member. Pentatonix really thought this out and respectfully added nuggets to honor Queen. Usually, you can hear in the beginning when they sing the lyrics little high little low that "little high" pans to one ear and "little low" to the other. Very clever and subtle. The couch is a tribute to the earlier lean times of Pentatonix when they sat on their mustard couch and sang to their fans on KZread. Those days were much more intimate, and they would often sit on the couch and converse with fans all over the world. A lot of thought goes into all their work but it's interesting how they are able to pay respect in the covers to the original artist(s) and still make it their own. True musical geniuses. How fun it is to watch you discover them.

Hello from New Zealand. I think the secret of their success is that they do all have their own individual parts to play, but they know each other so well, they can support each other instinctively and combine to create their own distinctive PTX sound. You'll see Kirstin help Mitch leap on the couch to sing that high note, but there are often occasions where Mitch and Kirstin are hard to tell apart. Kirstin loves Mitch's voice and is so happy for the world to see his talent. Scott is the same when they have something special to do. You should see his brotherly admiration of her skills in Seasons of Love Live, and he's often smiling kindly at Mitch, or Matt or Kevin (and Avi when he was there). Thanks for your wonderful reactions.

The night sky toward the end of the video was, as others have mentioned, an homage to the members of Queen. It was also, I believe, representative of the lyrics of the song that were coming up. The night sky is bleak, full of empty space, and, when looked at in a certain light, makes you feel small and insignificant...so, in the end, nothing really matters. I mean, we've all had the empty feeling inside from time to time, waiting for the next thing to come along and take us "anywhere the wind blows", so we can all relate. You mentioned that you'd like to know all you can about the group. I would suggest, then, starting where it all started: The Sing Off 2011. From there you'll get more of the history of the group, both from the videos themselves and from we Pentaholics as we relay memories of that time the performances bring back to us. Happens just about every time someone does a Sing Off journey with PTX. As you are a fan of the basses from these groups, I would make a couple suggestions for when you have the time. Since you've reacted to some of Geoff's solo work, and I see that you've started getting into Avi's solo work as well, you should check out some of Tim Foust's solo work. I think you'll be impressed. In that same vein I have yet another group for you to check out. The Bass Gang. You're going to have your mind absolutely blown! I won't suggest anything in particular from them, I'll let you decide what suits your tastes best. In the meantime, welcome to the acapella community! We're so glad you've decided to be come...one of us, one of us, one of us. Lol. You have an absolutely massive backlog of music to listen to from the three groups you've already seen, years of reacting material, and a fairly receptive audience who will stick with you through most, if not all, of it. The acapella community isn't huge, but we're vocal ( pardon the pun ), and loyal. We love our reactors, follow and subscribe to many, and support them in any way we can once they've found a place amongst us. Sorry for the long post. Again, welcome to the community. Fun video, man! Can't wait to see what's next!!

But you can still take the journey, and many more Pentaholics simply LOVE that journey because it is still a fun filled voyage. The first time you see and hear them, you are seeing them after all together as a group, two or three days ONLY from meeting each other, with their audition (Telephone) the day after they first met. And you will be blown away by the talent and professionalism when they first got together, and we all get the pleasure of watching them grow and struggle, but blast away the rest of the competition. It's a trip. Highly recommended!

Brian May is actually Dr. Brian May. He is an astrophysicist. His PhD thesis a survey of radial velocities in the zodiacal dust cloud" was published in 2007 and is a popular astronomy book of the same name. He started his research in 1970 and then stopped to run around the world in this rock band named Queen. Maybe you've heard of them maybe you haven't I had to Google them. That's sarcasm. The megaphone in a prop. Mitch does not use it in the live performances. the voice you hear when they're looking at the stars is the same voice Mitch uses with the megaphone . The shot at the sky is homage to Brian May. Brian May was so impressed with the video that he posted it on all of his social media sites. The shot with Mitch lying on the couch and Kevin and Avi on either side appearing to move the couch forward is to represent the pallbearers carrying Freddy . The shot at the end when they're looking up at the sky always puzzled me because there are four shooting stars and I always wondered about that because there are 5 members in PTX. I read in a comment that it's an homage to Queen because there are 4 members in Queen. At least that's how I interpret the shooting stars. The moving couch pays homage to how they started. After Sony drop them they did their own videos and uploaded them to KZread. They would just be sitting on a couch with a camera aimed at them. I think they did them all in one take because they didn't have money for post-production or editing. They worked on this song for about 5 years until they had it at a point they felt it was ready to be released This is a link to a video titled a beginner's guide to Pentatonix youtu.be/lDxIfwfC This is a link to a live version of Bohemian Rhapsody. Hello Matts Reacts. Another masterpiece A Capella arrangement by Pentatonix. They are all superb in this. Scott with those pop sounds, Avi so deep, Kirstie with her sharp notes, Kevin with all those sounds driving the beat and Mitch out performing himself with those spot on beautiful tones on the singing, the high pitched note and his vocal cords turned into an electric guitar (the megaphone is a prop). "Mitch has this effortless gift" you said - spot on - and you have only just touched the surface of the supreme talent of this counter tenor and vocal acrobat - Mitch Grassi has the voice of a generation - his gifted, talented and skilled. The high note was our Mitchy. Please react to PTXs cover of Gold. PTX videos are always intentional - in the videography, in the wardrobe, in paying homage to the original or making a statement.. There is a Behind the Scenes for the making of this video that you should react to. I see others have already explained the stars and imagery. Thanks for staying on the PTX journey - you will not be disappointed. If you want to see PTX cover Queen again they were a a part of the Queen Sing A Long tribute in 2021 singing Somebody To Love. I belong to the Wayne's World generation, so I always associated this song with Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey and the gang head-banging along to this in their car. I really admire Pentatonix for their total respect for the song. They use their massive voices and creativity to make the song shine, and never to aggrandize themselves. That's why Brian May, like many other artists, enjoy the PTX covers of their songs--they know their precious song in the best hands and will be treated right. Peace from Greece!

Hi from Kent in the UK! Enjoying your reactions immensely. 😁 The megaphone Mitch uses in this video is just a visual prop - in their live performances, he can do this without the megaphone and still sound the same. And yeah, his voice has been described by many professionals in the business as a 'once in a generation' gift. If you want a really good idea of just how amazing he can sound solo, he's done a cover of Bille Eilish's 'Your Power' where he arranged and played all the instruments himself, and his vocal is just... out of this world angelic! (Can't wait for you to react to PTX's 'Can You Feel The Love Tonight?' as well - Mitch does some insane vocal runs in that, and, since you're a big Kirstie fan, I think you'll be very happy with her performance in that one too!) AS far as I know PTX haven't done any covers of the Backstreet Boys - but Voiceplay have... kinda. They did 'Boybands in Five Minutes,' and a Backstreet Boys song does feature in that (I'll leave you to guess which one it could possibly be...) Well worth a watch!

You are also loved! You've been the bright spot in my day today. I loved your utter disbelief when Mitch "transformed" into a guitar and your excitement in the entire song! You bring a lot of joy to many people with your open and honest reactions. Personally I'm a huge fan of a capella. My favorite is Home Free, but PTX and Voice Play get their props too! The best thing is, they're all different and there's no need to say one's better than the other. It's a matter of personal taste. All 3 of these groups get along and sometimes collab on songs or production. At least Home Free and Voice Play have. I don't think PTX has, but still, no issues amongst them. Keep doing you and you'll keep growing this channel and gaining a solid fanbase! ❤

Hello from central Florida and thanks for your reaction! This was a very hard video for them to make as it was a very cold night and they worked on a moving couch that tipped over easily. Check out their behind the scenes "Pentatonix- The Making Of Bohemian Rhapsody". Pentatonix also did a great cover of "Somebody To Love" on a Queen family sing along TV special this past Christmas that you would love and it is on You Tube. Yes that was Mitch doing the high note and the electric guitar part--loved your "Mitch Slap"!

The night sky is paying homage to Dr Brian May who is an astrophysicist Boh Rhap is probably my favourite piece of pop music (I am a classical musician) and I forget that I am NOT listening to Queen when I hear this. That is how insanely good this is!

You haven't missed the rise of Pentatonix. It is all here on KZread from their Sing Off performances which I really recommend because you get to see them from the beginning. I am sure someone has already told you that Kirstin, Scott and Mitch went to the same high school and sung in their high school choir. They also performed as a trio. They wanted to audition for the television show, The Sing Off but didn't feel that had enough voices to get the effect they wanted. I believe it might have been Scott who had seen Kevin Olusola on KZread cello boxing. He was playing his cello and beatboxing. They contacted him and he signed on and then they found Avi who was involved in a program called Acapella Academy. They contacted him and he came along for the ride. They only got together a matter of days before they auditioned and didn't have high hopes of making it but they did. Videos of each weeks performance are here on You Tube so you can see each of their Sing Off performances and what the judges had to say about them. They went on to win the Sing Off and had a recording contract but it didn't go anywhere so they started doing covers and posting on here and their following grew to the point where they were offered another recording contract and the rest as they say, is history. Avi left in about 2017 and Matt came on to fill the bass spot. So Sing Off performances to check out, the best in my opinion, Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles, Born To Be Wild by Steppenwolf, Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye, Dog Days Are Over by Florence and the Machine, Britney Spears Medley, and the rest are also there. One of the judges, Sara Barreilles, during one of her remarks about their performance said that she thought they could be competitive in the music industry and they have proven her correct. They have won 3 Grammy's, toured the world and started writing their own music. Lots to see from these guys. ,By the way, the season they won was season 3 and the three judges were Sara Bareilles, Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman. Following the performance of Dog Days Shawn Stockman told Mitch that he had one of the prettiest voices he had ever heard. That is a high compliment from Shawn.

The megaphone is a prop. Mitch doesn't need it. If you really want to know all about PTX, check out these 2 videos "The Beginner's Guide to Pentatonix", which has history and snippets of many of their songs, and "What You Don't Know About Pentatonix" which is also history of the band without snippets of their songs.

Queen...then it hits me...no musical instruments....Insanity. And.....Mitch slapped again....lol. Avi and Kevin SLAYED THIS!!! Cool thing about Scott is the more you listen the more you realize just how GREAT he is vocally. homage to Bryan May, Dr Bryan May, became an Astrophysicist, and then added one shooting star for each band member.

My favorite thing is that Mitch alone does what it took Queen three different band members to do. The lead vocal, the guitar solo and the high note. Ptx has no full backstreet boy cover but they do use a small part of As Long as you Love me an an opening to a medley they did on a German tv show. It’s called wettendass medley. You should check it out. It’s live and really good. They do however have do have a full NSYNC medley that’s really good. Close enough right? Both boybands from the 90’s.

Hi from Minnesota USA. PTX did a lot of things in this one in honor of Queen. Some of them are easy to spot, like the flashlight effect in the Galileo part. Some are more obscure: The starry sky is in honor of guitarist and astrophysicist Brian May. There were 4 shooting stars, representing the 4 members of Queen. Also, the the pile of singers on the sofa is a reference to one of Queen's album covers.

You are not alone, Matt. I also completely missed Pentatonix until just about the time you were making this video. I don't believe I ever saw _The Sing-Off_ (hard to be certain because I had a brain tumor at the time which has obscured my memories - and before you get worried, it was benign, it was operable, and it's all gone now with no reason to believe that it will ever return), and the years since the tumor was removed have been, um, let's go with difficult. It's only since my husband passed in February that I've had time to pay attention to KZread and begin discovering some great singers, and even then it took me several months to happen onto Pentatonix. The truth is, we can't know everything. Things happen when they happen, and we live with that. Better to focus on how you intend to increase your knowledge of Pentatonix, or whatever else your fancy turns to, and in the case of Pentatonix it's easy. Just check their KZread channel and listen to whatever catches your attention. There's plenty there, with more being added all the time.

Lots of good recommendations here for future reactions. As a novice, maybe start at the very beginning where PTX got their start, with the Sing-Off! A dozen or so episodes that are an excellent introduction to these five immensely talented individuals and how they grew together to win and set them on the path to who they are today! They had only met Kevin THE DAY BEFORE their audition! Welcome to the ranks of Pentaholics, we’re good company! A fan from Minnesota.
