Don't you know? We did. Liberty wasn't the first. Freedom was his predecessor. Freedoms disappearance into the name jungle never to be heard from again is what broke our boys resolve. They just couldn't bear to keep fighting knowing that freedom was dead. They knew it was a waste of time life and money and eventually the brass knew it too. Maybe a little too late but we left the steaming hellscape of a jungle much less then we came into it as.

Eventually, he developed a nasty smack habit and was sent home. Some say that he was involved in the fragging of an officer who tried to crack down on drugs in the unit. Now you can usually find the elderly cat on San Francisco sidewalks with a sign saying "spare change for a Disabled Vet." It's a sad story.

There really was a mascot from 2003 - 2009 called Smoke. Look him up in wiki. However, he died in 2012 of natural causes: Smoke, also known as Smoke the Donkey, became a mascot and therapy animal for the United States Marine Corps during the 2003 Iraq War. Marine Colonel John Folsom helped rescue the malnourished Iraqi donkey and built a corral and stable at Camp Taqaddum in Iraq from 2008 to 2009 among the Marines of the 1st Marine Logistics Group who were deployed there.[1] Folsom was able to find a Navy psychologist to designate Smoke as a therapy animal in order to address regulations against keeping the animal on the premises. The donkey became popular with the troops who would send photos to children back home.[2]

The fact that Jeffrey's favorite activity is "waiting for orders" means he is perfect for the military life. I did my mandatory 6 months and still remember all the waiting around. Always in a hurry to get somewhere, and when we get there, there is at least 2 hours of standing around, waiting for orders. Good time for a nap though. :)

@@SurprisinglyDeep Sure. I was in the artillery, and part of the group that scouted and prepared the correct positions for the incoming (those days still mostly truck-towed) artillery pieces. After that was done, we would act as extra crew for the artillery pieces, pull communications wires across the forest floor or whatever was needed.

My grandfather actually died on the USS Liberty. He was a 34 year old naval officer with two young daughters, hoping to do his duty as his father had in WWII. From what I've heard he was a great guy. My mom grew up without a father because of Israel. She has never forgiven them.

Like many Onion videos, this parody is biting and hillarious and yet almost disturbing in the real-life issues it parodies. It's like I don't know whether to laugh or facepalm. Nice work, guys.

I caught part of "I am Legend" on cable last night and noticed the actor playing the news anchor in the movie is also the host of "Today Now!" Kinda hard to take him seriously after you've seen him do the Home Depot Memorial Decks segment for The Onion.

*Its sad because he was in my squad once. I was deployed to Iran to capture a high value leader, and he was with us the whole time. Suddenly a C4 went off and killed half my squad. Me and the rest of us were devastated, until the Puppy started making us laugh, doing funny tricks. We then forgot about our dead brothers and ignored the dismembered bodies, and we all gained the courage to take out the enemy, and successfully raided and captured the leader.
