Turning the 4 "unshuffled" into 2 then into 1 was pretty easy to figure out, but the rest of it was really amazing
9:12 I like how you were actually trying to see if Penn made any words with your deck, too funny! The magic doesn't stop until you leave the stage ;). Also, I just realized Penn and Teller were both ferociously inspecting your table after you left the stage, looks like you really fooled them hard! :D
I think this was easily the trick I enjoyed the most from all fool us seasons. True master!

The pure joy and respect between masters of their craft is what FU is all about, and this, for me, was the ultimate example.
Before I ever saw this or you I had a math professor show me this trick before and he even explained how this works but then you did that last bit. WOW I have no idea how you managed that.

Yes the last bit was added just to fool the boys.
This trick seems very mathematical to me. But the precision of the faro shuffle, wow. I was lost after "King of Spades"

I'm really surprise they got fooled by such a simple trick involving only a few Faro shuffles. The left and right sides of the deck have different markings. An interesting book "Mathematical Carnival" by Martin Gardner shows how to use Faro shuffles much more in depth.

I think I understand the trick. Awesome how the shuffle is mastered. Only, how the hell did you get Penn&Teller, I'm blown.
Great performance! As a magician myself who has performed your effect in the past, I thought I was with you. WOW! I didn't see that coming, very impressive. Congrats on Fooling Penn & Teller!!!

Thanks John... Glad the new ending fooled you.
This trick, Shawn Farquhar's act, and Kostya Kimlat's act are my top three favorite acts from fool us.
A long time ago (30 years or so) my firm was lucky enough to have hired Paul for several ABA trade shows. We met in Pittsburgh when I was consulting with Mellon Bank. Amazing then, more amazing now. His Tonight Show appearances were magnificent.

I appreciate that.
I've watched you, Paul, since I was a little kid growing up and saw you on World's Greatest Magic in the early 90s. I also watched Penn and Teller growing up as well. I became a restaurant magician during my college years (and Castle member) and learned some of your work and respect you talent and genius. It was so, so great to see you on Penn and Teller's Fool Us and be able to fool them, and it was also very amusing to see Penn as a huge fan of yours. Thanks for what you do and contribute to the magic community.
Damn... I worked 15 years in the SFX industry, making the impossible possible, I even worked on a few contraptions for magicians, but it never ceases to amaze me how skilled some of these people are, and I love every minute of watching them. Thank you very much Paul.:-)

I've been watching this video over and over trying to figure it out... and I think I have a theory. The card force and the Unshuffled part are pretty well known, so I won't go into that, but I'm more interested in how he got "King of Spades" and "Penn & Teller" to show on the same deck, without any (obvious) deck swap. I think the angle of cards is important, like a lenticular print where you see a different image depending on the angle you look at it. Notice he always holds the cards angled upward so you can see the Ace of Spades on the bottom. However there are some letters on one side of the Ace so you can tell which direction he's holding the deck. I think one side of the deck has "Unshuffled" printed on it, and the other side has both "King of Spades" and "Penn & Teller" on it, and depending on which way he's angling it you see one image or the other. After Penn admits Paul fooled them, he even says "if you look at the exact right angle..." as if he knows the angle is important. I could be wrong... that's just my theory. But wait! Wouldn't Penn and Teller have seen that when they asked to inspect the deck? I think there's one last move that happened after we all thought the trick was already over. There WAS a deck swap, and Paul performed it in plain sight. When he tucks the deck away in his pocket, he does so away from the camera, and then when he walks around the table he taps his coat pocket to indicate that's where he stashed the deck. I'm betting he stashed it somewhere else, and had a completely different deck in his coat pocket. When P&T asked if they could look at the deck, Paul was all-too-eager to whip the deck out of his coat pocket and hand it over. I'm guessing this was a bit of a "meta-trick" to fool P&T and they didn't even see it coming. Could be completely wrong, but I came up with this story in my head and I like it!
Nice work Paul! Thanks for performing this trick for us at the trade show in Nashville a few months ago. Have been waiting for this to air and couldn't wait to see if you fooled them! Congrats

I had to add a special ending to fool them. Now I'm using the special ending at all my performances.
Always loved the Unshuffled move, simply one of the most elegant card tricks that will never cease to dazzle the audience.

Thanks for the nice comments. It has served me well for many years.
I think my favourite part about your three appearances on this show is how exceedingly kind and genuine you seem. Part of magic is to put on an act or a front, but every time I've seen you here, you appear to legitimately be a kind man who loves what he does.
I know the math here, which means I Know how you do this right up to the last last "Penn & Teller"... and he checked them on a bias / angle so I'm clueless.
To be honest, until recently, I thought Shawn Farquhar was the best fooler, but now I'm having my doubts. Beautiful presentation, clean sleight and an amazing trick. Love it.
So smooth so simple looking but mind blowing at same time, such elegance much respect !
Mr. Gertner... That trick was patently amazing, and your performance was a thing of beauty. Glad you stumped P&T... Best of luck for your continued success.
Ha! I could see the magic marker in his left hand the whole time. I use crayons, like a real professional.
Fantastic performance!!!! Magic lives on, forever.
Paul, this was amazing, your skills as a magician are truly unparrallaxed, sorry unparalleled. The clean pocket was brilliant forward thinking.
That ending is definitely one for magicians, being someone who's favourite part is figuring out the mechanics of a trick this was a real treat.
Paul, Thanks, for sharing your work in all of this!!
Paul, you are still amazing. I hope all is well with you!
Wow, what a phenominal performance. The first time I watched it you blew my mind.👏 especially the ending. I had to watch this a few time to finally figure the trick out. Your a genius! But I wish the camera was on your hands to I could figure out how you made PENN @ TELLER show up.
I go back to this at least 1a month.epic. i look for a deck switch and cany see it
Love it! Wow! I think I know the end part. But the precision involved is crazy.
I am very jealous of the skill he shows with his "unshuffle." It's done with such precision, possibly the quickest, cleanest I've seen. I wish I could do that more than once reliably!
This was a great bit. Well done.
I’ve seen this trick like 5 times and it still amazes me every time
this was done very nicely! Amazing.
Wow, this was amazing. I'm a true fan of his as well. He's a SOLID musician!
sir you are a truly amazing magician i enjoyed averything about this performance
the force is pretty obvious but the trick is beautiful

Meh. If youre gonna force just force it. Common viewers think its random. Anyone slightly in the know should recognize a force regardless of the technique
@invictuz4803
6 жыл бұрын
Not true, I know about forces but probably not all the techniques. Some techniques still leave me thinking there was no force, for example, the one where the cards are fanned out and the audience selects and pulls out a card.
Teller's wowed expression says it all...
8:38 when teller realizes “holy shit hes that good”
Congratulations Paul! You are AMAZING!

Thanks... it was fun to fool Teller.
This is why I watch magic. To be amazed. Great trick!
Excellent performance Paul. I've seen this done by the great Daryl as well, and your performance was equally stunning. Kudos! :)
The first unshuffles are just an interesting property of interleaving a deck and what you can set up for it. Any IT person should have seen right through it. The last part, the third message, is almost certainly a switch. Not because I saw it happen, but because he stuttered when questioned, as if he wasn't sure which deck was supposed to hand over.
I enjoyed watching your performance on Penn & Teller's Show. Your act is one where I can appreciate the time and dedication it took to perform the routine, and at the same time still be puzzled about that certain element that did fool them. Congratulations on your performance!

I don't understand why would it take years to learn it when the similar effect Spreadwave where you can spell every card and NOT force it takes probably couple of days or weeks? I must be missing something in the trick being extremely hard and looking easy.
I love Paul Gertner's performances. He's such a down to earth guy with smooth and amazing routines.
This one is so enjoyable, and it looks simple, but I'm sure it's not. Great job!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that was amazing dude. tutorial time? :P haha
Absolutely brilliant performance. Paul has a new fan!!
Well done Mr Gertner, I thoroughly enjoyed watching that
So I am less than a novice in the art of magic. I didn't rewind and pause too much, only once as I recall. I can figure out how you brilliantly shuffled the cards to spell out the same word four, two, and one times. I think the same method was used to spell Penn and teller, however, it was more refind and careful. Really enjoyed it. I'm almost certainly wrong, but that's my guess.
An interesting thing that i noticed is that the cards weren't in a random pattern at the start. the colors were in a pattern that's fairly easy to see, even if you don't pause.
2:14 did anyone else observe the shuffled deck, arranged outside in, meeting at both 5s. Don't know what happened after that.. impressive 🙌🏻
6:13 is there a deck switch.. so that he can show a different deck to penn (if he asks to) ??
The cards are marked on both sides. He was able to combine the markings so as to form all three phrases: UNSHUFFLED KING OF SPADES PENN & TELLER
my brain has now got smoke coming out of it
You're an amazing person. Keep being awesome.
Hi Paul The way you walked at 06:13 you knew that you bamboozled them...Am I right? It was epic...
I'm not into magic at all, but I can see how it all was done until the end when the message "Penn & Teller" appears. Assuming he didn't swap the decks, I have two thoughts on that: * he must have erased "Unshuffle" and stamp "Penn & Teller" in its place while we was holding and showing us "King of Spades". * half the cards (say odd) have the "Unshuffle" print, and the other half (odds) have the "Penn & Teller" printed. The reveal of one or the other is done by keeping one of the sets slightly pushed inwards relative to the other. Similar to interlaced TV signals used to work. I love now knowing if any of these is what he used or not.
Amazing people like you is why I wanna see the world
When he riffled, watch closely, he closes the deck and selects the king on purpose. Probably with a finger brake he set up when he showed her "they were all shuffled, see?" But the un-shuffling was pretty neat. I liked that
Very impressive sir.....
Unbelievable. Even the 4 perfect farro shuffles were incredible, let alone the final P&T bit.
Good job!
Just awesome.
Tellers face at 8:37 proved they were fooled the moment he offered the cards
Really good show. I got pretty good idea how it is done, and I like last part when Penn asked the deck to inspect. You did very clever trick there. Thanks.

What trick did he did? Please explain in PM.
The king of spades is clearly a force, however that's as much as I have. Great routine.
#1 -flipping to top of deck when she said stop the thumb was on King of Spade all the time
I'm purely jealous of the repeated faro shuffles. They look so cool to me but I haven't figured out how to do them yet
This is a trick I can watch 3, 4, and 5 times and enjoy it more each time.
Best card trick i have ever seen
I always enjoy teller's facial expressions
Wow, just wow! Best card trick I've ever seen. You are a very talented man!

Thanks... glad you enjoyed it.
pretty sure that they gave that one, you can see that when they inspect the cards, he's doing EVERYTHING to cover up (the camera's view) the fact that there is marker on both sides of the deck, one with the "unshuffled" and one with "pen and teller".
Penn asked to see the deck he used to do the trick! The one in his right trouser pocket not the one in his jacket! Good bluff coming round the table :) bit over animated tapping his jacket pocket gave it away.
4:31 Sneaky but the spades were unshuffled in the wrong order:p
15k views in 4 days. great work paul. it reminds me of an Arnel Renegato effect that i recently picked up.
@paulgertnermagic

I'll have to check that one out.
the cards are in sequence in the beginning each "unshuffle" basically reorders the sequence (math trick), last part shows the other side of the pack you can because he flips them before squaring them
Amazing.
If you look closely after 6:12 you can see as he turns and starts to walk around the table, that he takes his right hand with the deck and hides them (in a hidden pocket?), and then places his now empty hand into his right outside coat pocket to make it look like he placed the deck in there, when in fact there’s already a different deck in that pocket, the deck that he will eventually give to P and T when they ask to see it.
What other thing Penn was preparing to ask Paul Gertner about? I am so curious to the second question he didn't asked him! :(
@williamroop451
6 жыл бұрын
I think that they didn't expect him to let them LOOK at the cards much less handle them. The 2nd question probably got shut down when he handed them the deck. You could see it in Teller's face, the surprise.
I have seen a lot of magic in my life. But this is the craziest thing I have ever seen.
Carbonaro should go on Fool Us
It's a fantastic illusion. Bravo.
When he told Allison at the beginning that the cards were in a random order, were they really shuffled? Looked like they were in sequence starting from both ends tho :^)
Hi Paul, out of curiosity, how did you come up with this trick? Did you start by thinking of what effect you wanted and then work out how it could be achieved? Or were you thinking about what you could do with a certain technique? Or something else entirely?
@paulgertnermagic

Original idea of writing on a deck of cards was published in a Magic Journal in 1973 by a guy name Dr. Ewer. Another magician named Bob Wicks then published a number of ideas one of them being the use of the word Unshuffled. I built upon those ideas and worked it into a magic effect with a selected cards etc. A lot of magic is like that we build upon ideas of creative individuals who come before us and try and add our own touch to an idea.

Your effect is very similar to Spreadwave performed by Mathieu Bich but instead of writing on the back you write on the sides. For the last part you probably find a way to spell P&T in between the rest of the words you were already able to spell. Also do you used additional deck/cards for the last gimmick? :)
The coolest grandpa ever!!
I think I figured it out, but do not want to ruin it
There is something in the unshuffeling obviously , but there was just one thing I noticed , when he unshuffled the cards to get a perfect deck all the aces were in start but the ace of spades was at last and was in reverse order. Surprisingly the card was also king of spades. It seems a little fishy.
Dear Paul, The only thing a know is that at the first time the deck is not completly random. The two eights with different color is the 26th and the 27th of the deck, right?

Paul Gertner. I’ve got a question that I can’t find the answer I’m looking for. What kind of marker do you make the words UNSHUFFLED with I’ve used sharpies. Dry erase markers and other pens. But they always bleed onto the face and back of my deck ruining them for anything other than practice. Thanks in advance
I loved the card mechanic sir Richard Turner N I loved sir Paul... Both are God of card magic
Shawn Farquhar and Paul Gertner should have a duo act.
It's all about the order of the cards. Depending on the order it can say different words. He is a master at moving the cards anywhere he wants in any order.
One of the better tricks I've seen. Also, is it just me, or does she wear that dress on every episode?
This inspired me to learn the basics. never tried before. what are good cards old casino etc to learn the absolute basics with. Nothing fancy like this one, just the basics.

Terry Peake I'm addicted to this trick, particularly the technique used. The best cards to try this technique with are the Tally Ho decks, and the Gold Standard Bicycle Deck. Lately I've been using the Theory 11 Green Monarch deck also. You really just want a high end deck of cards because the edges will be smoother, and the cards slightly softer out of the box. Paul Gertner uses the Phoenix Back deck.
@paulgertnermagic
7 жыл бұрын
Depends on if you do the shuffle from the top down or bottom up. If top down Phoenix are great. If bottom up, Bicycles are better for you.
The only thing I can see at the start is that there is some sort of pattern in the distribution 1-2-1-2-1-2-2-1-2-1-2-2-1-2-1-2-2-1-2-1-2-2-1-2-1-2-2-1-2-1-2-2
