Penn Spinfisher VI Impressions and Lamiglass Insane Surf Review

I took my new Spinfisher out to see how it paired with my tried and true Lamiglass Insane Surf. It reel felt pretty refined (for a Penn) and wasn't too heavy for the rod. The large diameter spool made it a great casting reel and it handled a 30 pound bat ray very well, although there was some issue with cranking under a heavy load which I attribute to the high gear ratio and sub par main gear support. Overall I give it a B+ but we'll see how it holds up over time.

Great reels! I moved to southern CA recently. I have a 3500and a 4500 bailless from fishing stripers back in the northeast, ny, ct, etc. Your videos are great man. I miss fishing back east and heard your stripers are a little smaller. I might have to open up some moving boxes and get the babies out and hit the beach. Thanks for the motivation👍👍

I have the same problem with low cranking power with this reel (and my SSVI6500). They increased the line capacity of this generation so the spool width increased, so more line is retrieved per crank. SSV4500 pulled 34" per crank whereas SSVI4500 pulls 40". They should have made the handle longer to accommodate for this increase in line per crank. I fixed mine by under spooling it to about 1/2 capacity. Now line per crank is less and I have more cranking power.

I don't know much about those two reels, but Tackle Advisor has probably talked about them in the 100$ reels review and he goes in depth with stuff. If you can, definitely get a Spinfisher over those two. The Spinfisher is sealed and is one of the best reels you can buy in that upper price range.

Yeah I am liking the reviews how does the lamiglas compare to a Okuma rockaway in weight/sensitivity also do you have any experience on the tsunami shield line of reels I am looking to pick one up for Christmas probably a 5000 size plus an Okuma rockaway med/hey 10’ for fishing bigger plugs about 2-3 oz for striper and around 2-3.5 oz drop shots for halibut planning on 30 lbs braid as my main line and probably 15-20 lb topshot just wondering your thoughts on these two items and if you have any time/exposure with them

I’ve used the tsunami shield a handful of times and it seems like a solid reel for the price. As for the Rockaway, I wouldn’t recommend it. I actually owned one before I got my lamiglas and it was not at all what I expected. It was a complete noodle and couldn’t cast more than an ounce. I fish a lot of pencil poppers and the rod couldn’t work them at all. If you can, spend spend the extra money and get the Insane. If not, the Tsunami Trophy 2 is a great option for under $100, just make sure you get the distance version, the standard ones are too heavy

I like a 8’6” or 9’ salmon rod with a medium heavy action and a really fast tip. I’d say an okuma sst medium heavy or a daiwa north coast in heavy ( both are rated for 1 1/2 ounces) as for the reel, the bg 3000 is great. I also highly recommend the shimano spheros 4000. Both are about the same size (Daiwa reels run large). Any combination of these would be great for pretty much everything you could want to throw in the surf. I pretty much only use the surf rods for popper fishing

Your surf/wave conditions look nothing like what I see on my trips to the surf. You must live on the surf/beach so you know when surf/waves are best for casting/fishing/catching. I really enjoy all your commentary. You really know your fishing and local area. You're likely the best fisher in your locale. looking forward to your next vid.

I do flick it over just before it hits the water but not enough for it to cause tension on the line. All it does is pick ip most of the slack in the line before I close the bail so I’m not reeling in a bunch of slack every cast. Helps with wind knots

Would have thought the line retrieves would be different. With those reels mentioned. Spheros depending on size i thought is around 4.6 to 1. The Penn has a 6.2 to 1 ratio. Hence the difference. The BG has a ratio inbetween the two but has very large main gear which would help with more cranking power

  • @thesantacruzsurfcaster6231

    3 жыл бұрын

Matthew Faulkner maybe that’s true with the old spheros, but the new spheros 4000 has a 6.4 to 1 gear ratio and brings in 40 inches. The difference has to do with the way the main gears are supported, the spingisher seems to bind to the pinion under pressure more than the Spheros
