That "top plate" or "shield" you mentioned at 25:52 is coated with a hydro-phobic coating on top....it works in unison with the rotor to provide a seal that is engaged when stationary or when the rotor is in motion. Not a traditional seal like a rubber gasket obviously, and there's a reason for that. This design is used because it doesn't create resistance, and allows the rotor to spin freely. The clutch area does not rely solely on the sealed ball bearing. Hope this helps.

I have a both 6500 and 4500 size slammer. The 6500 is beautiful, I landed a 200lb ray on it. The 4500 was really tight when i first got it, so I opened it up and the thing was packed with grease. I wiped off some of the grease and the thing was as smooth as the 6500.

13:32 drag discussion. For those who want to know why the drag has a higher than normal minimum drag pressure. It has to do with the sealing at the base plate which is required. Normal top only drag stacks are sealed by compressing the base of the spool against the shims. Dual drag designs the spool turns on the bottom drag plate which has to be sealed separately which adds resistance. Still very smooth but raises the minimum pressure a bit. Same with the Gosa vs Spheros. As well as Twinpower, stella sw and some other dual drags.

Great video. I looked at two Slammer III 4500’s display models and both had QC problems (tooling marks, alignment issues, etc). It’s a shame. My first generation Slammer 460 Has been one of the best reels I’ve ever owned. I’ve been going with the BG’s for mass-produced reels as of late. They have QC problems as well but are half the price so the sting isn’t as bad.

11 months ago when I saw this video I bought the saltist 3000. 11 months later I bought a saltist 4000. Absolutely love these reels the drag is unmatched way more precise and buttery smooth. Definitely worth the upgrade over the BG and will take this over any pen slammer. Like Mr advisor here says if you can handle 60 lb of drag and then go for the slammer. But I can guarantee you 90% of all anglers won't even use more than 25 lb of drag for any fish weighting under 100 lb.

I own a Penn Slammer lll 6500, like you have mentioned in the video it's really heavy on the handle. I was wondering if it was due to some issues during the assembling process I don't know. It would be great If it was a little lighter on the handle. Other than that this reel is the best for that price range. I love it

Thanks for doing this review I'm getting off the fence and into Penn's yard on this one I have some toys to sell and get rid of but plan on a smaller slammer on a Shimano Teramar Tsx80xxh. The great thing about brass is it's gall resistant, electrolitic resistant, and self lubricates to a degree. Granted there's better corrosion resistant and harder gear material but not with all those other qualities at this price point.

I purchased two slammer III 8500HS, brought them home, was setting up to spool them but when i turned the crank on one of them there was a very obvious clicked sound at every turn of the crank! I can pretty much strip any spinning reel down and put it back together again blindfolded but being this was brand new, hell no back to the store with it! They did replace it with a new reel no problem. But my point is as you said, penn needs to really tighten up their quality control... Also, a great reel!

You should Review the Fin-Nor Lethal spinning reels. Probably one of the best value for money for a $100 reel.

Seals are great and all but I actually enjoy dissecting my reels and slapping on some lube protection and really u know good and Well Saltwater doesn’t care how many Body Guards it has Thx for sharing it’s great to see what’s in the inside. That penn looks nice always been a fan of Brass gears

Great work mate, I just bought the slammer 3500, after carefully researching reals in this price range, whilst I was in at Tackle World Cairns Australia buying it, I was told they lend out Penn slammer 3 reals, for people to test out before buying, I was told a guy dropped his rod and borrowed 3500 into the salt water up the Trinity Inlet, he went back the following weekend, trying to find it, that he did, he returned it and the guys at Tackle World opened it up to inspect it, after a week in deep water, it had no water in it, I was sold, I'm yet to use it, waiting on good tides 👍😁🎣

Check out regearing a Dana 60 axle if you'd like to see what kind of pattern the ring gear should have from the pinion. But suffice it to say, like your did in the video, you generally want engagement in the center of the tooth otherwise you'll see premature wear, excess heat and even failure.

Brass Vs Zinc alloy is a complex issue when it comes to gears because it's essentially hardness vs shear strength. Brass is much harder so the gears will wear less but a lot of zinc alloys have superior shear strength so will be less likely to strip teeth under extreme load. Personally I agree that brass is generally the better material in most applications because wear is a constant factor whereas large loads are an occasional hazard but if you were planning on catching a lot of tuna or other brutal tackle busters then maybe shear strength would be the bigger concern than ultimate usable life.

I'd be keen to see an update on this, with the recently released slammer IV dx vs saltist MQ.

I got the Penn and it got gradually a 'heavier' feeling when winding (beach and inshore fishing), just lost a bit if its smoothness for sure. Services / repairs didn't really help. My mate got the saltist and it's never had an issue and also casts a little further. I think I will switch away from Penn moving forward. Still a great reel just comparatively I think its assembly qc not the best. Cheers!

Also, I would just go with best sale. The Penn was $190ish when I got it, saltist was about $50 cheaper.

I have the 2500 LL and the line lay still sits narrow at the top and wider at bottom, even after leaving just the thinnest nylon washer in place. Any ideas? Going bare, metal to metal seems a no-go. And yes, the gasket is laying flat underneath that bushing the spool sits on. Thanks TA. --Rich

Just found your channel; great infomation. I run a couple of charter boats in Florida, we fish Penn and Accuate for our deep sea reels and I really love them. I have tried almost every spinning reel brand, in the $175 to $300 range. Most last a full season before we replace them. However, the Penn Slammer III 8500, I purchased 4, lasted about 6 months before the rotors locked and the gears where stripped. This would be about 100 trips, We use 60 lb braid with 60lb mono leader. Every time one of these died was with a customer with big one on. Never had that problem with Saltist, Cedros, or Saragossa.

You said the saltist is the model is whats durable, im thinking to buy the Daiwa 4000 BG, do you think this is just as durable as the saltist overall? or is it just as bad as the Penn slammer III that has problems? btw i found saltist that is cheap models but im not sure if its the same durability as the saltist 4000 class?

@@r.k862 Never owned one of these. But my preference is Daiwa over Penn in the spinning reels. But the question is what environment will you be using it in. In freshwater the Penn would be ok. We are tough on the equipment. Everything just gets a freshwater rinse at the end of the day and maybe every six months a little oil. We use the Stradic in the 4000 series. You should be able to pick them up for close to 200. One of my boat captains likes the Nasci reel. It is about half and if you not using it every day it will last a long time. Also, you may want to look at the quantum cabo series. We just purchased two of the 8000's in Oct of 2020. It is one of the smoothest reels I have ever picked up and is cheap. And has a 5 year warranty. We have not had a hook up that spooled us so I can't report on how it will handle really big fish. We have used it on mai and kings. But later in the season, we will have a hook up on marlin or large shark and we will see.

In your first comment you said that you never had a problem with the saltist reel. I just need to know which reel will last longer in my hands would it be the daiwa saltist or the daiwa BG model? I will use it for Saltwater and going to use it for small and big fish. I need to know between these 2 reels that won't break down on me. You said you never had a problem with the saltist, so I might buy that, but I need to know have you been using the daiwa BG model and do they break down quicker than the saltist? Thanks

@@r.k862 Again never had the BG. The only problem that we have had is related to client abuse, They drop reals, sometimes breaking the handle or the bail. Or it goes overboard. We will spool the reel with 50 or 60 lb hollow-core Jerry Brown line, with about 100 ft of 60lb mono that gets change every couple of weeks. When the reel gets a sloppy or gritty feeling then it gets replaced. I can only assume that the bearings have lost their mag fluid and have ingested some salt. I am guessing that we get over 600 trips on a reel before they would need to be repaired. The cost from a BG to Saltist is ABOUT 100.00 spread this over a few years of fishing and your pre trip cost is very small. The cost of your gear is minor in the overall cost of fishing. This holds true if you are fishing from a boat. So go for the better reel.

@@pbnjimages294 thank you so much for your help. I'm an amateur btw. For the price of saltist ($400au) I think I'm buying 2 BG reels instead ($400au total). I'm looking for a extremely strong 4 piece (for compact size) rod that will catch large fish sometimes, people told me to buy the ugly stik gtx 4pcs that rod is extremely strong. What rod do you recommend? Would the gtx be the best one for what I need? Also what brand or type of line is most durable should I buy? I don't want it to cut easy for me or should I go for any brand name but look for how much lb it can handle?

Have Penn slammer 3's and been up to chest in the surf on 30-50lb sea bass . The Penn Slammer 3 has the drag power I need to turn difficult hot fish and not damage the reel. Hook a white seabass and you will know why you need superior drag. Lesser reels will fail under the load these fish create. Very common as well to have to drag 20-30lbs of extra seaweed that the sea-bass wrap up in . Try winding all that up on a lesser weak drag. Penn is a tad less smooth than some, but its not apples and oranges difference. Top And bottom of the shaft movement perhaps a bit of resistance but on Fish, I mean serious fish, like a white sea bass with spinning gear you need the extra drag and raw power. This concept of ultimate buttery feel when landing a monster? The Shimano Stella has it but its $1200 to $1400 dollars verses $200.00 on a slammer 3. Daiwa b.G 's own a couple and they were great on striped bass but not on the White seabass.. Simply to much for them. A Saltist? looks pretty nice but no reason for me to buy as i know

I am very much interested in knowing about their mechanical power comparison when it comes to crank up and reel in under pressure. Does the larger main gear and pinion of the saltist play a role against the smaller but brass one of Penn? What about the lever/handle angle? Is the main shaft thicker and stronger in the slammer than in saltist? What about the ratio 6.2:1 -smaller diameter spool for penn 4500 to 5.6:1 for saltist equivalent?

Doyou have a different channel where it shows you using the reels in action?

Thanks, I'm buying a Slammer despite having had to return a Clash that had impossibly bad line lay, despite shimming. I don't feel like I'm going to enjoy using it, compared to my Stradic, but I'll kill my Shimano if I keep on abusing it. Just hope I don't get another bad one.

Hi great video...I have a shimano biomaster 8000xsb but i am looking for a new fixed spool for tope and conger which one of these two would you recommend to go with a Century TTR? I was also looking at the Daiwa bg 6500 or the penn spinfisher 7500 or would you recommend a multiplier? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

What about the weight? A Slammer is at a comparable line capacity double the weight of the Saltist. A reel with around two pound is kind of a deal breaker for throwing big poppers at GTs all day long. On the other handy I doubt that the improvemnt of the Saltist over the BG is worth the price. So I probably just get a new BG for every holiday trip... What do you think about the weight issue?

Can the AR clutch be removed or disabled (remove the locking pins) using only the bac up AR system? Just wondering since the AR clutch always seems to be the weakest point.

Hi, I'm from the Uk and it's getting very confusing what daiwa is offering here. Are the BG magsealed, saltist nero and saltist black bay the same reel? The daiwa uk website makes no mention of anything saltist now like it never existed. The 'new' bg magsealed looks suspiciously similar, but is cheaper than the saltist would typically be. For some reason I like a touch of red Anodise on my beachcasting multipliers and baitcasters but I dislike same on spinning reels in which case I like blue or gold or silver/clear Anodise.

I love your vids but was bummed to see the out come. I was hoping the saltist was gonna be better. The slammer is the obvious winner I'm not a Penn fan headed my spinfisher v, and other spinfishers of the past. I was hoping the saltist was going to a surf worthy sealed reel.i want to pull the trigger on the saltiga but concerned about sand binding it up.If I got a saltist and sand screwed it up no biggie it's not huge investment but saltiga gets bound up from sand gonna be pissed and can't bring myself to buy a penn.so maybe VR200. Very keen to buy the new slammer but that lower pinion support and wear seems like an achilles heel, there is a lot of torque under load in this area and chewing out what effectively the main body of the reel is not cool! Why on earth did they not bearing or at least bush it!

Daiwas have aluminium main gear. The grade of aluminium used changes depending on the price of the reel

Always been a shimano guy but bought the saltist. Many charter fisherman in Miami and Florida Key swear by the older saltist model. They say it's unbreakable.

The bg is a do everything reel....with sizes specifically fit for freshwate applications. Nother really makes a saltwater reel a saltwater specific reel......conversely. Carp reels were brought into the USA as long distance casting surf reels...and many didn't holdup well. If the saltist is your reel with mag seal and more rust resistant bearings.....and some rubber seals......It helps extend like new performance...but they aren't sealed like a saragosa or van staal...Stradics have similar levels of sealing to the saltist.

Great vid as usual have u made a video on the Saragossa and I’ve just missed it or maybe not but for future vids I’ve been a Shimano guy for a while (until these daiwas are starting to come around) maybe when the new reels come out get down with the new stradic and Saragossa comparing them to the spheros and old saragossa also just wondering if you have ever been inside of a Cabo or any quantum thanks great vid

Cast zinc gear as well although it appears to be heat treated or something..(not sure if it's changed) I kinda made the Saragosa F as popular as it was....at least when it comes to forums. I also was the dude that pushed for the 10k size. I have a 10k sw gosa in pieces now....GOnna film the review soon. I've had a few gosa sw's over the years.....sold em all as they jsut became backups to stellas....but I like them better than the Penn slammer....Slammer is still better on paper gear wise and drag and materials....But the gosa is smoother and just as powerful. Manages line better and is sealed at the same level wihtout being tight.

The saltist in this vid uses the exact same gear as the BG...The saltist back bay uses forged machined aluminum...which is an upgrade over the cast zinc

I owned both and my slammer 5500 couldn’t handle tautog in the jetty. The drag just gave out on me. So I trashed it and decided to never get a penn ever again (btw penn battle 2 was my favorite for the longest time so no I am not a daiwa fan boy). Had my saltist for over 2 yrs now and I’ve dunked it in saltwater, drop it in sand and actually fell off my truck while driving (was not driving to fast, max 15mph) and it’s still good and smooth. $75 cheaper and probably the best $200 reel in the market.

Great info, I personally spend 3 hours at tackel direct comparing those 2 reels I couldn't come to a conclusion and start to consider to bite the bullet and buy a Van Staal vr150 although everyone is recommending the slammer. I have used my trusty Daiwa BG for a rough year and it is still running as new. Please advise. Thanks

The VR is a great reel. It's sealed better than both...If you need it. And it has one of the most durable desgins you could ever ask for (don't let the marketing fool you....The VSX isn't leaps and bounds better) Van staal / zebco had to buy the design...otherwise the VS would be DOA....not enough room for a third premium surf reel especially at hundreds less. But it's $$$$ in comparison. amzn.to/2DwOUdt almost 3 x what you pay for the slammer amzn.to/2pfnm8m But ya gotta get a good one....the quality control has been touch and go with them. But...You can't rule out the saragosa sw. It's sealed as good if not better than the slammer. ((which nobody seems to realize)) Especially at the ar clutch...With dual lip seals as well as a grease barrier between the dual lips. Probably the best all around surf reel goin

I work with ferrofluid a lot with electric motors. The high powered ebike community also uses ferrofluid all the time but not in the way that Daiwa uses it. Most BLDC electric motors have an airgap between the rotor and magnets, therefor we use ferrofluid to fill in the gap to transfer HEAT to the outside case and heatsinks. Once you put ferrofluid in a motor the motor has to be 100% sealed because the ferrofluid will find a way out while spinning at high speeds inside a motor. Its interesting to see Daiwa using it as a "seal" because in my opinion the only way ferrofluid can be used as a "mag-seal" is if the ferrofluid is 100% sealed itself which kinda defeats the point of having it in there in the first place. Ferrofluid is also a HORRIBLE lubricant under a friction load as it has micro-crushed magnets in it. In my opinion Mag-Seal is more gimmick than progression.

I've used ferrofluid for heat sinking in the past. Daiwa's use north of the clutch is sound...in bearings....it's a bit more problematic...as it can weep inside the bearing...and clog. It does a good job of keeping elements out for the most part...it's not perfect though

I guess I'm lucky. Ive never had a line lay issue with any penn spinning reels. And I currently have clashs, spinfishers and slammers. Offshore, fathoms and trolling squall (4)30vsw's and (2) 50vsw's. Great 2 speed trolling reels. And use the slammer III 8k's. One 8500 and 2 8500HS for spotting fish offshore. No, i dont take all 3 with me lol! And again, never any issues including line lay... I think penn went thru a bad quality issues time about a decade ago but they have really stepped their game up since then...

Poor line lay is mainly an issue on their lower end. Though a thump / click in the slammer 3 is a major complaint....and even those who have received replacements direct from penn have received reels with the same issue. Slammer 3, Spinfisher vi, fathoms and squalls are great!

Hey my friend keeps saying that the casitas he wants to get (he hasn't even used one while i have) is better than my new curado k. I keep telling him that the k is better... Am I right?

I've got a Penn Slammer 3 8500HS on a 12ft Shimano coastal revolution topped up with 50 pound daiwa J braid. It's heavy asf, the wind knots are real ! Might sell it and put the money towards a 2018 stella FJ.

Lot's of people have said that the J braid is prone to wind knots... it's a very thin, light, pliable braid. It doesn't have much rigidity at all which is good until the line flops around mid cast and gets tangled on top of itself. I definitely would try some different braid before giving up on the reel.

I've gone through about 2000 yards of j braid...tip wraps sure....But not a single wind knot...Wind knots are 90% user error...Or in some cases....how the reel manages the line....Penn is notorious for sneezing blobs of braid. Even this reel. Often with penn reels you have to underspool them a tad. When you close the bail be sure to feather tension on your line prior to the retrieve.

Again an excellent video.. As always..!! I do have a smaaaaaaaaaall request though.. It would be really helpful and informative if you could make a review to an Abu Garcia Spinning reel, like the new Revo x, which is kinda on the low budget reels shelf and compare it with the corresponding Daiwa and Shimano reels... Thank you so much..!!! :)

I own the Slammer III 6500HS, BG 5000 and Saragosa 8000 so for me this review was very informative. Thank you.

Yeah - I'm spoilt for choice this season. I managed to find the BG 5000 after Xmas for $75 - no brainer, the Slammer 6500HS for $176, another no brainer - a Shimano Spheros 8000 for $150 - no brainer, to supplement my Saragosa. If you hunt for the deals they are out there.

I paired my slammer III with a star paraflex and absolutely is the best snook combo I've ever fished with. With my Sewell custom rod paired with another slammer III coming in a very close second.

Are you really saying Slammer 3 over Saragossa? What about the BG MO? Really like to see the Saltist vs the BG MQ. How's the Daiwa vs Realist?

Hey scooby I'm brand new to the van staal deal, just bought a Vr 150 and I love it but the drag isn't as smooth as I had hoped. any tips on getting the most out of the reels drag system as well as the reel in general (lube,maintenance,etc) always interested in hearing your thoughts.

I haven't been in the drag on that reel. And I sold my last 2 vsb's years ago.... Is it not smooth when desktop fondling or when under pressure fighting a fish... Big difference when you have tons of seals

Tackle Advisors ha funny I never actually made an account I just like reading the forums over there, there's a lot of knowledge on stripersonline. I knew scoobydoo before I knew tackleadvisors I'll say that. But to answer your question I'll be more specific. The drag isnt sticky but the pressure is inconsistent. Going quickly from tighter to looser it makes the rod bounce like crazy when a fish runs. I tied my line to a post and walked backward slowly to feel the drag pressure without tail beats and such and observed the same thing.

Is the 2016 saltist a great reel for $183 new in box or are the newer reels better for the $$?

I like the gosa or spheros over it if it's gonna see hard use in the salt. Same with the slammer...(and i'm not a penn guy in the least) If you are not using it in the surf and sand....and it's kept high and dry for th emost part....the saltist is a good reel...The back bay if the sizes and capacity works for you are better reels imho.

Not so sure about that..I put this out in 2013 right when the reel came out......Not a sealed shaft but a sealed clutch.....*daiwa says they have a mag sealed main shaft on all their spinners which is incorrect...it's a mag sealed ar clutch housing.... Maybe even earlier than that one you linked. It’s one version prior to the 14 Cabo ( images.app.goo.gl/U69orPxXeh5RPxgEA ) it has bronze gearing. I have a csp40pts for inshore and it still perform til this date, just need cleaning and greasing every few season.

for that price range i would go with a fin-nor offshore, they have stainless steel gears that will outlast both of those reels

ok!....but only BIGGEST lethal, the100 (range 30oz). Another factor is the gear ratio/RETRIEVE. slammer8500 for jigging 4.7ratio-42"(as a saragosa 20k...more power?7500 38")....and for popping hs 5.3/50". lethal is in the MIDDLE 4.9-45"...............Another missing factor is HANDLE length! (longer it length makes the reel slower, but more powerful) bg/saltist 5.3/48,7" or 8000 53.3"

when will you make slammer VI video?

I use Shimano for my ultra light setups casting 500 times a day. I’m about to get a Daiwa BG 5000 for my striper rig.

Good reel... May even be able to drop down to a 4k.. Great fit on do all rated 10'6 rods and under.. Fits enough 30lb braid to rip

Daiwa reels usually have more drag than listed on the website u should test the drag. Im pretty sure the gear of the saltist is machined aluminium.

The saltist is cast zinc. It's the same exact part that's in the bg. Saltist back bay gets the most forged and machined alu gear. The last drag test broke the reel.

We need to be able to test these claims for maximum drag. That is, test to see if that drag rating is accurate AND test to see if reel can actually tolerate that max drag setting, e.g., with a big fish that is capable of pulling drag at max setting. E.g., the Penn Spinfisher V w/Slammer drag claims 30lbs of drag. BUT the reel (in my case SSV6500) can't tolerate that max drag setting. Big AJ on repeated runs caused rotor nut to break threads and pull rotor off-axis -- causing the rotor to hang and disrupted drag. Problem confirmed by Alan Hawk. Can these reels actually generate the drag rating they claim? How test whether the reel can hold up to this max drag setting over time? Or do we just assume reels aren't really designed to support their max drag setting?

I wish there was a way I could test drag... I myself have only really been let down a scant few times by drag numbers... At the same time I've also damaged reels testing drag numbers trying to get to the spec... I no long do drag tests because I really don't want the headaches... Additionally it's not max drag its how it performs at or near its max... Other than lock down fw bass fishing for fish that couldn't beat a scup in a tug of war... I never go over 20lbs on spinning gear... The hardest fighting fish I target are tuna... And even 100lb tuna can be easy peasy.. . I understand what Aj can do.... And the reasons why the strength is needed... But that's outside of my wheelhouse..... I've actually seen a mangled spinfisher at that spot.. But he fell on it.... I personally think in 2020 it's sad that manufacturers can't provide video of drag performance tests....

Hi Kristian, I'd go penn slammer 3. It is a very good reel. Provided you get a good one...I've seen some defects out there...but a good slammer is a spectacular reel.

You ought to at least check out Alan Hawk's review of the BG 8000. He gave a full explanation of the cast zinc gearing and that it is perfectly acceptable for the type of fishing the reel is designed for. It is the same type of metal used in the original BG which is still going strong after all these years. BTW there is nothing special about the saltist compare to the BG except for the sealing which is gimmicky at best. BG comes in at $90-115.

I know the review and Alan. He's featured me on his site. I'm a big fan of the gears used in the new Daiwa spinners. But for the price the saltist is at there are better. Look at the saltist back bay as an example. And everything else in the 200$ range now. The BG is probably the best 99$ reel out.

Does anyone know what braid he has spooled on the slammer?
