Which Daiwa 'MQ' Series Reel Is Right For YOU? (BG, Ballistic, and Saltist Comparison)

Ойын-сауық

Which Daiwa 'MQ' Series Reel Is Right For You?
Daiwa recently came out with the Daiwa Ballistic MQ and its own Saltist MQ won the award for best new spinning reel at iCast 2021.
MQ reels are compact and well-sealed throughout, but the question is: which one is the one for you?
In this episode, Fishing Coach Justin Ritchey walks through the Daiwa BG MQ, the Daiwa Ballistic MQ, and the Daiwa Saltist MQ comparing pros and cons across different price points.
If you want to check out the tackle mentioned in this video, you can find it all in our Fishing Tips blog here: bit.ly/3K2JslF

Hey there Salt Strong. Got a Question for ya. I'm looking to get a BG MQ 2500. Only thing is, I'm not a fan of the T-style knobs. Can I get a knob from the Ballistic MQ to replace the then T-style one on the BG MQ?

Good job Justin, Daiwa is all I use too, like to mention that as far as the mag seal, it’s only on the main shaft, not the line roller bearing, like they used to,( which is where I think it’s needed more ). The Saltist Back Bay is my choice over the Fuego ( which flexes too much for me ) but those LT reels are smaller. My overall choice is the BG MQ 4000, it retrieves 2+ more inches for 8 tenths of an ounce more for the same price. Good job thanks.

Those retrieve numbers are dependent on how full the spool is of line. The retrieve rate is greater as your lure/bait gets closer to the reel and the spool fills with line.

Great break down. So many reels out there and it gets confusing. I come from a fly fishing background and I can’t get over how much value you get with spinning gear. A 300 dollar fly reel is going to be pretty basic and if you took it into the salt it’d be shot after one trip. I’m liking the value of this new spinning world I’ve entered.

@@FLFlatsmaster The TFO Pro has an advantage over the Banshee for kayak fishing because it has a shorter butt. Also, it will have a much better hookup performance assuming this angler is using lures since its tip is stronger than the 6-12 Banshee that has a very soft tip (great for live bait, but not good for many soft plastic lures).

  • @Saltstrong

    @Saltstrong

    2 жыл бұрын

@@FLFlatsmaster Yes, the Banshee can be excellent for lighter lures. The issue comes up when the soft plastics are rigged weedless where the hook point needs to be set through plastic as well as the fish before the fish realizes what they ate isn't natural. As for the butt length, the TFO is only 9 inches from butt of the rod to the lowest point where the reel arm enters the reel seat on the rod. For the above reasons, I stand behind the recommendation stated above for a kayak angler who is using lures - the TFO Pro will save money while having better performance for a kayaker using weedless soft plastics.

I just destroyed my BG reel trying to service it because 2 screws were over torqued by manufacturer, while waiting for new body 🙂figured it is time for a new salt water reel. I love my ballistic ex400H reel. Have saltist 450 which is a little faster but double the weight and I do not know what fish will have a chance against that tank. Now you really picked my interest with this little 300 saltist which should be smaller and lighter than my ballistic. My only concern is that I like using heavier braid (so I do not cut my fingers), and this thing is rated for 20 @220 yards. So the question is will I be able to put 150 yards of 40lb or 30lb braid on it and how will it flow? Price vice it is about $60 difference and I take rigid body as it may work better on bruiser blues.

I bought a Daiwa Over There 11ft ML/M and when looking for a light reel, ended up with a Shimano Vanford 5K (surf fishing light lure casting outfit) I looked at the Daiwa BG MQ but a zinc gear in a premium reel is pathetic especially in this day and age. I really dig Daiwa rods, but their reels (unless you're in the top echelon of models) seem to fall short of the mark. The Vanford on the Over There looks better too and the whole combo is about ~500g which is incredible and I can cast slugs in the surf all day

I has fuego 4k, the shipping and services to replace magseal, grease and oil cost 70% of the price of the real. With bg mq take me only 20 minutes to clean & new grease, oil. I recently bought Penn reels, both the Slammer and the Spinfisher in the 4500 size! The slammer was launched by what I am thinking was a sharkand in the surf for maybe 10 - 15 minutes! The drag assembly was free of sand and water, the drive assembly was contaminated by water but totally free of sand! However to area between the rotator and the reel body was full of sand, you might think that on a reel costing close to 300.00 dollars, more attention might be paid to this area! The sand contamination in this area locked my reel up tight after maybe 10 turns of the handle after retrieving my outfit from the surf!

Japan had the first MQ in the form of morethan in 2017, rest of the world got the Exist and subsequently the Luvias/certate MQs. And multiple MQ variants based Exist (e.g. airity) and Luvias (e.g. Caldia) cover from top tier fresh water to budget universal applications now world wide. Americans on the other hand only has 3 BG MQ’s for salt water and that kage MQ that only 5 people in total bought 😂😂😂

The reason I just won't buy these is they basically decided they don't want you servicing them yourself. They don't even give you the MQ body wrench in the box and they don't sell the Daiwa magseal liquid. You can buy third party fluid but that's always a risk. I don't want to have to send this reel into Daiwa every year to be serviced when it's a 15 minute job myself.

No Sir, all metals bend, I deal with small , large and Extremely Large metal forms everyday. When it comes to any of these Three, they will flex in any and all applications, but it will come down to your or anybody's ability to adapt under pressure if that scenario presents itself. That instinct nature to back off the drag on the fly and slow fight a big fish rather than trying to thoroughbred horse the fish in because the premise is, "I've got Zaion LT baby, Light and Tough, Can't be beat., WRONG! No lie deceased as she may be now, I had a hardened step granny, finess and wear down a monster 62lbs flat head catfish on old-school 10lbs test, long before braid even came out, or existed. She had that patience and control and out of all the fish we caught, that big mamma jamma was the only one that had half body and tail outside the 5 gallon bucket.

Just let him do his thing. These guys do a pretty good job and are definitely passionate about fishing. You aren't required to watch, and you can always do it over a few sessions or speed up playback. I wonder how many of the people who criticize video length have actually made or edited a video? The time commitment to decrease video length can be exponential. I'd rather have more unrefined content to choose from than less ultra shiny polished videos. Bottom line... You have almost 1440 minutes every day to allocate however you see fit If investing 1.5% of that time once or twice per week is not possible (you can't do it) or it's not worth it (you won't do it)... don't do it. I find it difficult to believe you can't find the time barring extreme circumstances. It boils down to choices, and 22 minutes is rather straight forward to find. Speaking of choices, I do find it a bit odd that you found time to get on KZread and search videos only to post a comment about a lacking time to invest. A bit contradictory perhaps... Care to enlighten me? Did you make it to the end of my less than concise retort? Did you find the monster at the end of the book, or did it require more time to read than you were willing to invest? To everyone else... Sorry for the unnecessary comment. I've read several similar comments of late and this one just struck me. Crap, I invested too much time responding to Jim.
