So free spool IS with the lever forward on these reels . I found one of these in nearly new condition and almost dismantled it in attempt to correct the lever position . I'm new to your videos but once again one you have steered me straight and saved me a few cuss words along the way . I too came from an era where reel repair was exploratory surgery . Thank You for taking the time to share your knowledge . It is greatly appreciated .

Once again, I appreciate the benefit of your experience. I couldn't quite figure out the trick to pulling the drive side plate on this particular model, but there it is. Thanks! I'm working on a shamer that was "rode hard and put away wet" a long time ago. Once I carefully drill out a broken side plate screw where the head snapped it will be routine.

Nice job on the videos. I started collecting and servicing Penn reel about 20 years ago and honestly there was not a single video on how to repair/service them. I figured it out through trial and error and via my buddy Bill at Indian Rocks Tackle. Folks don’t realize that these Penn reels, while not the 10 bearing/infinite anti-reverse etc. ones they make today.... they were made with a little basic maintenance to last for years and years. I miss the made in the USA Senators and the folks in Philadelphia that made/supported them. This little black 3/0 reel does not have any bearings to seize or service, but can go all day pulling grouper off the bottom in the Gulf.

Like you say, they are not fancy, but they endure. The Senators are hard to beat for durability and strength. And they will outlast anything built today

Great video Dennis! My Buddy picked up a Senator 110 1/0 on a Garcia rod that someone was tossing out. I've started cleaning it up, and was surprised it was in pretty fair condition. I've decided to keep the reel for myself, and just ordered an upgraded set of drag washers (both metal and carbontex from Smoothdrag) from Mystic parts. And while I was at it, ordered an Aluminum frame from Tiburon. A bit overkill maybe, but I think this little Senator will make a nice Tog reel! Keep up the great work. I've really learned some great tips from your videos!

Thanks - The Senator 1/0 is the same reel as the Penn Long Beach 60, with the exception of the extra metal trim ring on the outside. Just in case you didn't know that. It is basically bullet proof. I don't know what they were thinking in throwing it away. It certainly will be great to Tog. - Dennis

I see that the outer rings on used Penn Senators that are offered for sale on ebay are often broken. Why is this and can the reel be used in that state? Your videos are very informative. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to make them.

The outer rings are protective. The reels can be used without them. Most Senators are essentially the Penn Long Beach reel without the outer ring. You can also still get replacements, either used on EBAY and other sites or possibly through Mysticparts.com, formerly pennparts.com. The rings sometimes get stress fractures from over tightening the side plate screws or suffer damage when slammed to a deck or wall. - Thanks for asking - Dennis

Thank you for replying Dennis. The descriptions said they can be used but I wanted to find out from someone who knows what they are talking about. I saw the outer rings for sale. Add the price of them and postage to the price of the used reels plus postage and you are not too far from the price of a new reel. Are the old made in the USA reels that much better than the modern Chinese reels?

There are differences in the materials they use today, but not significant enough for the average fishing enthusist to care about. It's never about the hands or machines and where they put these together. It is about changes in technology or engineering. Given that these technologies are fairly unchanged in the Senators and Jigmasters, I would say go with the newer ones if the cost to replace is too high. Chinese production started over 10 years ago, so it will be hard to find the older ones in good condition any more. - Dennis

Great video, thank you. I'm just getting into the older nostalgic Senators, specifically the 112 and 113. Is there a bearing upgrade for the spool for the 112?
