Penn Pursuit II 4000 -- Service and Lubrication -- Young Martin's Reels

This reel is very similar to the Penn Pursuit 5000 that I did in this video:
• Young Martin's Reels ...
In this video we disassemble, clean, lubricate and reassemble a Penn Pursuit II spinning reel.
If you like the video, please hit the like button and if you would like to see more of them, please hit the subscribe button. Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his KZread videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

Great video. Helped me solve my anti braking issue and tune up my reel at the same time.

I use Armorall, 0n my handles it cleans and protects plastics against UV ray damage. I think you will like how it works on handle gripes.

Bill, I haven’t bought any ArmorAll in years. The last time I used it I put it on the floor mats in my truck. Then it got on the bottom of my shoes and I nearly broke my neck. For handles it might work just fine. Thanks for the tip, I’ll have to give it a try.

Never seen a reel with so many different bearings Rick.

This is actually a pretty low bearing count when compared to some modern reels.

If the bearings are pitted that’s probably why it’s noisy.

I'd be interested to hear what you think of Superlube versus Penn grease

Barney, so far I think it’s a little watery for my taste. It will be interesting to see how it works out.

No override - I don’t like it. You did an amazing job however. If it only had an override it would be a decent reel. I think these manufacturers did away with overrides because it was convenient for them not the consumer. There’s another reason I prefer vintage spinning reels. I don’t like manufacturers trying to con me by saying leaving out a feature like an override was better for me when I was only done to be convenient and more profitable for them. To me that is just plain dishonest!!! By the way, I always oil those side plate screw holes when I reassemble a reel. Great video Rick! We missed you. - Chris

Chris, like I told you on the phone, I like the reel even without the override. I was sure you wouldn’t like it though do to the way you fish. From my boat, I don’t really need the override. You tend to favor complex reels and I’m more into simplicity. The fewer moving parts the less parts to go bad.
