I’m so glad you posted this because this is the exact reel my dad gave to me!l about 10 years ago. I used to fish with these and some other penn levelwind reels from about the same time-ish when I was a kid. It was my great uncle’s before it was his and considering it has not been maintained in at least 10 years, maybe more, it still spin perfectly!! I finally went fishing today and almost cried when I couldn’t find all of my poles, but when I got home, I found them!! Now I want to know how to take care of them. EDIT TO ADD: I subscribed! I’m cautious though if you have a shop to send mine too. I’m so scared of breaking bc I’m sentimental about them.

that is one heck of a piece of machinery. A friend would be in tournaments and had a few of these. He said with all the money spent on fuel , entry fees etc. these were the only reels he trusted

Boy, what a beast! I’d love to be the guy that hooked the big one with this reel. Of all the reels I’ve worked on the easiest slotted screws to butterfly wee on DAM Quick 270 Supers. They are very soft metal screws on those reels. I like the Super for surf fishing and have five of them. This monster Penn reel is massive and just exudes strength and power. I cannot believe the quality built into this reel. It is truly impressive. Even the spool looks powerful. I never put a rubber band on a fishing reel. If you forget it;s there it can degrade and leave a difficult sticky mess often in a bad place. There are other ways and different elastic bands that can accomplish the purpose without making a deteriorating sticky problem. Again what a massive drag washer and pressure plate. I almost pity the fish ghat comes up against this powerful reel! Great job on this reel Dennis. If was fascinating to see how it was made. -- Chris

I put the rubber band on assuming that it will be removed as soon as the owner readies the reel for action. The problems you get is when the reel goes into storage for a few years and yes, they do become a gummy mess - Thanks Chris

Thanks for posting the video Dennis. It's my reel and I just bought it at a flea market in Brimfield, Massachusetts. I paid $140.00 for it and let the dealer keep the rod. It looks like I made a good purchase. Should be perfect for tuna and marlin on the Baja. Thanks again.

The single speed International's are good for jigging tuna. If you fish for marlin, you'll probably want a 2-speed reel.. Prior to installing the line, get some carnuba wax and wax the spool. The wax will keeps the salt from eating the aluminum. Matter of fact, waxing the entire reel will add life in heavy salt locations. I'm a diehard Penn International guy. They're easy to service and once you service a International , they're alike from the 12 up to the 80 series. You did good getting a International 50 for $140. With the abundance of new manufacturers (fantastic plastic), the older reels that weigh a ton, have fallen out of favor.

I still have a 50 and a 30 I used off the rocks for LBG spooled with 30lb and 20lb mono Still work perfectly although have a Little Rock rash

Does it trip but not close all of the way or does it not trip at all? If it tripes, but does not close all the way, try spraying the bail arms with penetrating oil to loosen up dirt and debris. Also check to see if the bail wire is bent. It may need to be reshaped. If it does not trip at all, it is likely to be a broken spring or part that would need to be replaced. Those parts are probably not available - Dennis

I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO PURCHASE AN AFTERMARKET SPANNER TO FIT THE MITCHELL 600 SERIES MULTIPLIERS. ALL I GOT IS THE ORIGINAL ONE FOR THE REEL BUT IT AINT THE BEST TOOL TO USE. ANY IDEA WHERE I CAN GET ONE AS I DO A LOT OF THESE REELS

I don't know where to get one. Unfortunately, those reels are quite old and the aftermarket for them is long past. Those manufacturers have moved on to making other things for other reels. I don't think you will find one now, so don't give up on the original and don't lose it. These are hard to find as well - Dennis

When there are no micro screws around your drag shield how do you take it off to service the drag

The ones without the screws are held in place by plastic tabs. Slide a small screwdriver between the rim and the plate and gently pry between them to pop it out and off

I noticed when you were putting on the handle there were the word oil and I did not see you oil it or say whether it needed to be oiled.

I serviced the reel internally, so the oil is not needed. You can oil it in-between serving to keep the main gear shaft lubricated. Thanks for the note - Dennis

Why dont you buy your wd40 in 1 gallon cans. it will be a lot cheaper. put some in a smaller squirter bottle for easy of use
