I had forgotten about this reel...nice to get to see you working on it Dennis. I'm always interested in these types of reels,as I have two of them (an Okuma & a Zebco)....good to see what can possibly go wrong with the free spool mechanism and how to fix it. Keep up the great work and stay safe. 🎣

A lot of things can go wrong with this reel. I like the ones where the big gear drives the little gear and the world goes round and round. Be well - Dennis

I would not have one of these because with my limited eyesight there are too many small parts and intricate assemblies to deal with. I think this reel appears to be almost too fragile. It is the largest live liner I’ve ever seen. You did a fine job with this one. It makes me appreciate again what an expert you are. Thanks Dennis.

great video Dennis! I have a penn Fierce 2 6000 live liner that I serviced after a dunking in the ocean. I dont think any water actually made it inside. but one thing i noticed on the schematic was that the cover plate screws has a little plastic washer/seal. i found 2 out of 4 - dunno if they got lost on disassembly (i should really start using a parts tray)

Those little clear washers are easy enough to lose. Good point. Now you know to look for them when you work on this type of reel. The washers help avoid the screw sticking to the case with salt water or dirt residue. Best wishes - Dennis

Hey Dennis! First off I want to say thank you, a few of your videos have helped me tackle projects I wouldn't have had the nerve to take on without such excellent instruction! Second thing is, I have an oldish Berkley reel I found with no identifying markings that has a trigger to hold the spool while casting, and I wondered if you might know what it is. It says Made In Japan on the bottom of the mount if that helps, I'm guessing made in the 80's? It looks similar to an 810. I did a search on images and didn't see one. Thank you!

You are welcome. Berkley reels were made in Japan in the 1970's. They were trade reels made for Berkley as they were not a manufacturer. If you can send me a picture to my email - 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com I will try to help further - thanks for the kind words and for asking - Dennis

I love your videos! Thanks to you I was able to clean and lube a Daiwa GS-13 that I picked up locally. Which reel series do you find easier to service between the Okuma Coronado CDX and The Penn Fierce iii Live Liner? I’m looking at 6000-8000 size. Thanks in advance.

You probably have dirt in both of those assemblies as well. You will need to clean them in addition to the interior parts. If you are still having a problem, it may be in the arm that sets the lock on the livelier feature. It may not be engaging. Check to make sure it is free and moving easily when you trip the switch - Dennis

hi very informational video, my issue is that i have a penn fierce 2 8000 live liner with a stuck rear drag. The rear drag sleeve is stuck inside the rear drag holder and would not move for anything. is it advisable to just replace both the drag holder and sleeve. thank you

Hi Dennis, Just curious, was this problem caused by a "failure of materials" or excessive "driver enthusiasm", or both !?!? Best Regards, Cons

The bottom drag cap broke and I haven't see that before, so I am going to say material failure. Once that snapped, there was not way to drive the car, so to speak. It would just idle in neutral with the axle shaft spinning freely. - Enjoy your weather - we are back in the 20's - Dennis
