I like the fact she went from a happy sparky and bright anime style with cool effects everywhere and a well animated movement style to being cold, simple shaded and stiff movements as if she was in a dark cyberpunk anime instead. Really lines up her mood shift well

Peni was not even that cartoony in the comics compare to her movie counter part. She was in her setting serious sort off and I cannot say blade running type setting that started up cyber punk just half way like not spider-man 2099 future but more in mid side of things. Also she had a cardboard paper with 3 plates on hair to eyes and mouth on 3d text but new film lost it like a lot they did she looks plane 2d.

Here's how it happens: uncle ben and may of her universe (scientists) tell her at their laboratory that her father (presumably the peter parker of her world) has died during a mission while using the SP//Dr armor. And since she's the most genetically closest to him, only she can take his place in using it. They then tell her that the "psychic" spider that alows a user to interface with the suit will be introduced to her, she panics and asks her if it will bite her, kind of implying thay she diesnt want anypart of it, but they tell her that its already been released in the room. It bites her and she doubles over. We are only shown uncle ben and aunt may's calm expressions as they watch Peni presumably writhe in pain from the bite and link with the spider and the suit. She would have been only around 10 years old. When it happened

Well at least she still accepted Gwen’s offer to help Miles in the end of Across the Spider Verse, so we’ll see more of her in Beyond The Spider Verse.

Not only is she a Spider-Person, she's the protagonist of a mecha manga. She had no chance.

Penny got her "important person killed" moment...

So she lost her friend and her aunt, that canon event really affected her and does explain why she looks depressed.

Everyone's depressed until Miles shows up and proves to them that canon events can be prevented. That might make them all more depressed though. The only reason canon events happen is because no one expects them. Miles has knowledge of his before it happens, so that means he can stop it. Even if he doesn't know when. Imagine if he saves his father now only for him to die later.
